    I was on of those people you were talking about.. Madness changed my life. After seeing there film take it or leave it i knew what i wanted to do, Music. Mom said it's either and skiing holiday with the school or the saxophone, mom was i single parent so it was a big deal, i went for the saxophone. She payed off over 6 Months. Meanwhile i got a coat hanger, cut bits of cardboard into saxophone keys, stuck them on the coat hanger , so i could practice what the notes and scales were on sax...then finally got my sax.. on the day i bought my saxophone, i went to the music shop in Birmingham city centre, opened the door, looked around the shop and Rakin Roger, Lynval and Neville were chatting, i couldn't believe it.. they said hi.. never made it in music but gave it a go.. mom past away a year and a half ago.. I'm still playing the same saxophone she bought me when i was 15. I'm 56 .. ine of the best British bands of all time I'd say..

    Suggs is a proper legend, saw Madness a few months back in Swansea and it was special, what a day! they sounded as good as ever top performers.

    I remember when they were on the Young Ones. I'm an American and the Young Ones was on Mtv on Sunday nights (I think). I had just discovered Madness and BOOM there they were on the Young Ones! Awesome times!

      I think they were the only band to be on twice. "Do you know Summer Holiday by Cliff Richard?"
      "You hum it, I'll smash your face in."

      First time I heard/saw Motorhead was on the Young Ones - Ace of Spades. My teenage mind couldn’t cope with Lemmy, not when I was used to frikkin Simon Le Bon. It had a lasting effect on my musical tastes.

      Ha, yeah, that was the first time I ever saw Madness, on the Young Ones. Unfortunately I didn't actually realise how awesome they were until... well, quite recently, actually, just a few years ago.

    I had an art teacher at my High School called Mr Garrett, whose preferred method of punishing badly behaved boys was to grab hold of them, get a dixie cup, and fill it with water and hold him down and pour it on the back of his head. It was waterboarding-lite I guess. When I heard the lyric “Back of the head with a plastic cup” I assumed that this was what Suggs was singing about and this odd punishment at my school was more widespread!

    There's another version of the story Suggs tells about having done a video dressed as police & then storming into The Clash's recording session. In the other version, the group is not Madness but Ian Dury & The Blockheads, who were dressed as cops while performing "I Wanna Be Straight" on Top of the Pops in 1979. They then paid The Clash a visit, winding them up. Paul Simenon is on record telling this story, saying "That cop bloke looks a lot like Wilco." Did two different groups dressed as cops burst in on The Clash while they were recording in 1979, or is Suggs overstimulated in his imagination? I suspect the latter!

    Shame that these shows are on some paywall? Patreon or whatever. I think he could have built a good platform without taking it from those that don’t have the extra cash. I think his brief tv appearances and doing adverts for banks went to Ricks head.

      Sadly not. The live videos cost £1500+ each to produce and we could no longer afford to give them away for nothing. But the audio remains free and by listening you provide us with an income so we can make more podcasts. I'd love to do them for nothing (and there's still 100s of videos up here and new content every week) but I can't afford to spend £100,000+ a year. Maybe if I'd had more TV appearances.

    • @gingerwaynos
      @gingerwaynos Рік тому

      @@loumitchell5549 imagine tho? Crazy eh? Yes I’m aware things cost money. It’s still a shame it’s not free, or do you only consume paid for content. I imagine you’ll be firing off a cheque to old Rich right now after watching this free clip. There’s lots of comedians with free podcasts if Richard feels he can’t sustain this model the way he used to that’s his call. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t like it free as it used to be and if you’d followed the show you’d know he used to make a big thing that he’d kept it free and that he’d never have the big corporate ads, poking fun and a bit of scorn on actors and comedians who had taken work in adverts. Then he started advertising Lloyd banks. Tbh I don’t care that much. I think his format is good I even bought tickets and saw him doing the live podcasts and enjoyed it. I’ll casually throw in a little side swipe mainly because he’s got a very interesting self deprecating persona but is at the same time very sensitive to any perceived criticism so generally can’t resist replying to slightly negative feedback. Which is nice.👌

      A lifetime of drinking and smoking will inevitably take its toll but he seemed well enough. I think it was unrehearsed and so not as polished as some interviews. Still could listen to him all day, an interesting character for sure.
