One way to keep that bushing from spinning is to put a Scotch key in it. You drill a hole that is 1/2 in the bushing and 1/2 in the shock eye then tap it for the the smallest set screw you can find. This makes it easy to remove for maintenance/replacement but will prevent it from ever spinning. Don't forget to put Loctite on the set screw. This is an actual technique I learned while working in a machine shop many years ago.
how often have you seen/heard of offset bushings spinning?
Not often but in this case the force is going to want to push it around the other way. Its like balancing a broom upside down on its end vs hanging it by the handle.
Have often thought about using an offset bushing in the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position to change the progression, would this be sufficient to prevent rotation in that scenario?
@@mattdidisheim2211 I ride a Pivot Mach 5.5 I cannot use the offset bushing in the reverse setting. When I do it creaks like crazy and spins after one ride. One explanation I received, the DW link on the Mach 5.5 spins more on the bushing than other suspension setups. Not sure if there is any truth to that, but it def did not work for me in the reverse position, just like Offset bushings said it wouldn't :(. Considering I'm riding a Fox Float X2, I'm not willing to try a Scotch key.

You guys going to post any further updates on ride performance, how the bushings held up in their position, and any disadvantages that occur later?
I did a quick experiment with my 29er. Putting a 27.5 rear wheel on only dropped the BB, a touch less than 10mm. I think that would probably not be a massive deal. Especially if I put a fatter tyre in the back.
Yea I just recently did that to my bike and have ridden it a decent amount that way and it feels pretty good and i haven’t experienced any pedal strikes or anything yet

I'm riding almost the exact same setup, only with DVO suspension. Cornering is truly amazing! And the bike (as Beth said) is so FAST! The only problem so far is the offset bushing has rotated. I adjusted it and retorqued it. Two rides in and so far, it hasn't moved. Also, I climb with the rear shock in the middle setting to help avoid pedal strikes.
Did you use a 2.6 as well? I’m waiting for parts to arrive so I can mullet my AF but haven’t decided on tires.
Recently I turned my wife's Marin Hawk Hill into a mullet out of necessity--her 27.5" fork was out for warranty repair and we wanted to go riding, so I threw my spare 29" fork on it with a spare 29" wheel, and away we went. She's decided she's keeping the mullet because she's keeping her speed up better through tech, lifting the front wheel more easily, and feeling more control through turns. Her height is 5'2" / 157 cm, for those keeping score.

I made my 27.5 Marin hawk hill into a mullet bike by installing a 29er front end. Changed it into a smooth ride. I highly recommend the change...my son has the bike now. He loves it
So you changed the front fork to a 29er as well, not just the front wheel? Did you go up, down or stay the same with the travel of the front fork?

Nice video and a great explanation of the upside & downside of a mullet set-up.
I was thinking about the offset bushing in the r/suspension and if the suspension forces cause it to spin around, a simple solution would be a small grub screw tapped into the shock eye.
Back in 2002-2007 when I rode nearly every day 5 months out of the year, this was a really common thing to do. 26" wheel in the front, 24" wheel in the rear.
My hardtail and my full suspension both had that setup! And probably 90% of the people I knew and rode with had the same thing.
I wonder why it's seemingly so uncommon these days?

A reverse mullet maybe?
I ride Ripmo V1. Have slackened it with -1 degree headset and put 650b rear wheel. Both tyres are 2.4, cranks 170mm, however I don't use any offset bushing. Rode this setup first time today, initially had few pedal strikes but only when rear sus compressed. Adding a bit of low speed compression on my EXT solved problem, obviously BB is lower and requires more attention. Also had to readjust seat (move forward) to maintain previous position. All this has changed this bike dramatically, it's much more stable but still climbs as good as used to, whereas cornering experience is mind blowing!
I used the same reverse bushing +160mm fork set-up on a '20 SJ Evo for over a year and am happy to say the bushing has not rotated at all.
Great to hear. I ordered a bushing to do exactly that. Then the company (who shall remain nameless) said NO THAT WONT WORK! So I chickened out. Now I'm doing it!
That's great to hear! Hardnacks - we don't recommend using them, as they will want to rotate. We do have many customers using them in reverse - some bikes work better than others with this. If there's a chance our product won't work as advertised, then we won't recommend it as I'm sure you can imagine - so in general we suggest not running then like this. But... it's a free world! :)
@@offsetbushings5182 yes unfortunately for me, it did not work in my case. Lots creaking on a short ride, and the bushing inched its way to the middle.

I’d definitely start with one offset bushing. The clearance between the clevis and the seat tube is pretty tight with just 1. Let me know how it goes!

Same. It did not work for me on my setup, Pivot Mach 5.5, creaked like I broke my frame & spun after one ride. If they got it to work for them, I wanna know-how (not scotch key)
It’s interesting. I have short legs and like my 27.5s, but I run 2.6 and 2.8 tires on a couple different bikes. I do miss the speed of my old 29er though! Great video!
Nice video Beth! I love the ripmo because I think it is the only 29er that has a very low standover height and would be perfect for a short guy like me but even the ripmo af is back ordered still. Ride safe always guys! 😃
The Ripmo is an excellent bike, but the standover-height of an Yt Jeffsy, Canyon Spectral or a ton of other bikes is just as low.
Never really found the Ibis RIpmo that appealing but this is one nice looking build.
Mulleting can be a great way to update an older frame with a steep headtube angle. Putting a 29er fork and 27.5" wheel on the front of my old 2004 26" hardtail has transformed it into a very capable downhiller. It climbs for s**t, but I don't flinch anymore at anything I am comfortable taking my 2021 full squish bike down. It's bottom bracket height was lower to begin with and now matches a more modern clearance. The main thing is that the short wheel base will always just be something to deal with on it - though the extra lift at the front did stretch it out by about an inch.
Could you update us on this by chance? I have a Ripmo and I’d love to hear if you have had any problems with the bushings rotating or anything. Thanks for the awesome experiment! :)

If the bushing rotates, you might try some loctite on the outer surface of the bushing.
I’ve been running Flexx Bars for a couple months with the Yellow inserts and not for one second do I regret the expense. I will admit, one would notice the difference way more after switching over to Flexx on a familiar set up. Beth should just notice less wrist pain though.

you guys should install a pinch bolt in the shock for that bushing. Just dril and tap the shock housing and install a blt to hold it

Great review, I think its a better idea to use two bushings with half the offset. And locket them in. I did this to an old 26 inch Mojo years ago when I converted it to a 27.5 and it was great for a year or so. But it spun without me knowing, and I broke my swing arm when the back wheel hit the frame after landing a huck to flat jump. Ibis was really cool and sold me a used swing arm for 50.00. Except E bikes, I've ridden nothing but IBIS for 10 years now. Love them, and the company.

I honestly believe the mojo is a great plattform to mullet convert. you have to sacrifice a little travel in the front, but that hasnt hurt my riding at all. My Mojo 5 is now 155 rear and 160 front.
I did a Mojo 4 mullet and it was pretty dang amazing, however, it got a little overwhelmed in the super chunk, which is what inspired me to figure out the Ripmo mullet. Both are amazing but I prefer the Ripmo mullet for overall speed and composure and rough trails.

Had this same idea for my Ripmo before I determined the bike was too big and sold it. One of these days I'll try this out.

Spoiler alert: That bushing in the shock mount will definitley spin itself around. Nothing about this is a good idea.
I'm not saying "definitely", but I'm concerned too. I'd be more confident in it if they installed it with press fit bearing retaining compound and primer.
After a few days of riding which included many drops, jumps and rough sections, the bushing hasn't budged, not even a little. So we're pumped about that! If it did turn too easily we were going to try what Matthew suggested, but I'm glad we (probably) won't have to do that. We'll how it goes, long-term.

I had the same idea of reverse offset bushing but balked when the bushing mfctr. said it would just turn around.... glad you guys were undeterred.
I have the fox style nylon insert on my shock between the bushing and the eyelet.... I imagine a metal sleeve would be more secure.... I assume that's how the MRP is set up....

Very well filmed video, interesting to see a mullet conversion from a 29er.
One of the biggest benefit from a 27.5 rear, the shorter chainstay, is negated from this setup. Although you’ll still get the benefit of a lighter mass rear, and more clearance when shifting your weight behind the saddle.
Thanks! Funny thing is: Beth chose the Ripmo V2 over the HD5 (or other 27.5 bikes) partly because she *wanted* longer chainstays. Better climbing performance; better performance in rough, fast situations; overall better cornering characteristics, etc. There's a lot to love about longer chainstays :D
@@TheLoamRanger Ah that makes sense. I’m a bit stubborn with the old thinking that the shorter the chainstay the better haha. Many bike companies now are increasing the rear center on their bikes, for more high speed stability and climbing performance. Totally up to each rider for what ride characteristics they prefer 👊🏼

YES! The Crotch Cam. My personal favorite POV. Thinkin bout putting a 29 on the front of my 27.5 roscoe. Only downside is that Im REALLY diggin the 2.8 in that's on it now and I'd have to drop down to 2.3 to go 29 :(

Ive been riding mulet bikes for about 4 years now.. I tried full 29er and it didn't like it as much.. Interesting that you put a wider tyre on back though.. I put wider on the front!

Thank you! DHaRCO is working on getting more of their stuff on the ground in Canada but in the meantime I know you can buy online and return. I’m currently wearing size M for pants and shorts and S for shirts. I found their size charts pretty accurate. For how I like fit, if your in between sizes I would size up for pants and down for shirts as I don’t like a tight waistband but I prefer a more fitted shirt.

The handlebars DO look crazy! I’ll share my thoughts when I’ve had a bit more time on them. So far so good though!
I'm 6ft 1 and run the new Nukeproof mega v4 290 and run a mullet setup, I find a 27.5 wheel on a 29er frame produces the best setup.
Wow I just took my first ride on my mullet converted AF! This thing is amazing. The acceleration cornering and jumps are so much better.
Have you had any issues with the bushing on the ripmo AF? What else did you do except the bushing? How about pedal strikes?
@@lalleohman Ive had the bushing for 5 months of park riding on an XL ( least amount of bb drop). No issues so far. I’m running 165mm cranks. I’m on 2.6 tires front and rear.

@@lalleohman My bushing took forever too. I plan on ordering another just to have it on hand when this one wears out. As for tires I’m running 2.6 Kenda Hellkat in the front and Regolith in the rear. They seem to be the lightest fastest rolling tires with very good grip. The grip of the hellkat is amazing. The grip of the Regolith is good but you can make it dance around when you want. Cascade said they’re might be frame/ rear triangle interference with the offset bushing so I left it alone.
@@lalleohman be aware before making the decision, the smaller rear wheel will make the bike climb slightly worse than the 29 but the benefits to jumping descending turning and moving the rear around is so much better.
I ran two offset shock bushes, set up 'backwards', on my mullet bike and they ended up spinning round. I just run standard bushes now and don't have much of an issue with pedal strikes!

What I wonder, is it worth it? Since you guys are sponsored you probably have the parts you need laying around, but to the average Joe or Jane rider, would you recommend it?
I wonder how the shock will hold up with that offset busing too. I'm reluctant to go against manufactures since it could not only void the warranty, but would also be a hassle to deal with the consequences if something breaks and fails.
You guys should do a longer term review, 3 months from now would be great!

How did you adjust the shocks? I tried this and find they are very stiff. Any suggestions for shock adjustments? Have Lyrik up front and DVO in back
If you put an eccentric BB in, you can move the cranks back to steeper the effective seat angle or rotate it to the top to raise the cranks.
Hmm interesting. I've never heard of eccentric BB's. I'll look into it!

Hopefully the shock yoke doesn't smack into the frame at some point, that gap is tight enough on a stock Ripmo, with the offset bushing that looks REALLY tight. With the Ripmo BB being super low already I never really thought it would be a good platform to mullet.

Clearance will improve, such a high BB, short chainstays and small bach wheel make up for a lor of party in the back end. But the big 29er in the front end with a 130 to a 140mm travel fork is bussiness for shure.

It’s still her daily driver! It’s all still working like it did on day one. The reversed offset bushing hasn’t budged and there’s been no noticeable change in pedalling performance.
Business in the front, party in the back = DHF 29er and Minion SS 27.5

I realize this is an older video, but I'm trying to find a new shorter travel bike and can't find any without a 29" wheel in the back which I have not found to work well on any small frames that I've tried. Do you have a long term review of this set up? Would the offset bushing work on any bike? Where did you get it from? Did it ever end up rotating out of position? How did the mullet set up affect the climbing? If it makes the climbing a lot worse, it would kind of negate the benefit of having a shorter travel bike for me.
That is a mixed wheel Ibis Ripmo, also known as a Ibis 79er.. Try a Mullet Peacemaker!!
To do a proper reverse mullet, don't you have to replace the front fork not just the front wheel?
Interesting....I mulleted my 29" Stumpjumper 2 years ago (and loved it) and I am looking at getting a RIPMO now. Beth how tall are you? I am 5' 5" (165 cm) and hoping that a small RIPMO will fit me but there are none to try except for a bike store that has one in a box but will not put it together for me, because they are too busy and only do it for already purchased bikes.
I’m just over 5’4”. I feel like the small fits great for me! I’ve got my seat pushed forward all the way so I would think a small would be perfect if your an average proportioned 5’5.
why not run two offset bushings?
