HOLLOW ROPES- Good bad and the ugly!

  • I wanted to start reviewing some hollow chains. I did a generic review a while back but I want to be more specific. I started with the most popular chain- ROPE. The rope chain is an iconic gold chain. It's been around forever and now it's more popular than ever. I don't like hollow rope chains because I don't trust rope chains 100% even when they're solid. Especially at the smaller widths. I do think it's worth researching before you buy a hollow gold chain.

    Hollow definitely has it's issues, but I prefer it over plated stuff. At least it will never tarnish, and as long as you handle it with care, it will last awhile. And, you can still get a few bucks for it, when it breaks and you scrap it. I had a hollow figaro back in the day. It lasted awhile, but I could start seeing little dents or dings in it over time from wear and tear. I have a hollow gold link bracelet, unique, like a round heavy link design, but it got dented when I slammed my wrist down on a table. I'm definitely done with hollow stuff. But, back then, I was young, and bought what I could afford. It's okay to buy plated or hollow, if that's all you can afford, and you don't want to wait to save up for something solid. I'm in my 40s and outgrew dealing with the hollow stuff. I went from plated, to hollow, to solid 10KT, to solid 14KT. I might buy my first 18KT gold chain soon. It's okay to grow into this jewelry game.

    In my opinion, rope chains in general are not a lifetime chain regardless whether its hallow or solid. I recieved a solid 10k 2mm rope for christmas from my parents when I was in high school in the mid 90s. I wore it regularly for the past 25 years or so. A few years ago, the individual threads began to break and scratch at my skin. I would push them back inward to stop the irritation. Finally about 6 months ago, the chain began to break completely at the weak points where the threads broke. Over the last few months, I've taken it in to be soldered 3-4 times all in different points on the chain. I gave up after the 5th and final split near the clasp, and decided to scrap it completely after 25 years. I just bought a 4.5mm figaro from Jacoje (of which I've been wanting for years) which I love. The friction created by my pendants no doubt contributed to the demise of my old solid 10k rope, and am looking to get a 2mm franco in the near future from Jacoje for them in replacement of it. I'm done with ropes. They also high maintenance since they get caught in cotton shirts and pull at chest hairs as well. Gross constantly picking lint and hairs out of the micro links in them. This also factors into the eventual breakage of them.

    • @hiphopjewels
      @hiphopjewels 4 роки тому +2

      True. Unless you're going to get a pretty thick solid rope chain, you can count on the structure not being the most sturdy, compared to other options out there. And, it's not like they're the lightest weight chains out there when they're solid. So, you'll pay good money and the structure might not hold up as well as a Franco, Figaro, Curb or other link chain. People like ropes because they draw a lot of attention. It is a classic look. I want one rope in my collection, but it will be about 7mm, and I won't have more than one rope.

    Just wanted to add some insight from a person who ONLY wears chains when going out. I do not regularly wear chains on a daily basis. i don’t like the feeling of things on my neck. I buy Hollow Chains. i have a 3mm hollow rope chain i bought 6 years ago. i paid $180 (gold was cheaper back then). i threw a a solid gold jesus piece on it. why? to add weight to the chain when i wore it. i also have a 5mm hollow gold cuban that i bought 2 years ago from the mall..i only paid $400 for it. i do not recall the exact gram weight ( i think 22grams) and it is heavy enough to wear plain. it is still in good shape.
    moral of this is: fuck what others think, do you. Hollow is perfectly fine for an occasional jewelry wearer. still get compliments on my chains. Also take care of your stuff and it WILL last. at least it’s not gold filled, gold plated, gold dipped, gold chopped, gold smeared....yeah.

    Yeah I agree on the fixing a hollow chain point you had it in facts does not look the same they will either give you a cheap loop that connects the two pieces which won’t mess with the appearance of the rope other than the loop that connects it or they stench the chain and burn the two pieces together and that makes your chain longer than originally intended and it looks terrible like two wires tied together

    Dont say hallow is no good or you cant fix it. I bought an 18k hollow out in Qatar and its been 2 years going strong and daily use with no damage. 18k is much softer than the usual gold chains. Maybe i got lucky or its the fact that I don't let how tug on it.

      Luke Luecke It depends on how you treat it.

    • @paulaxton72

      Ropes can be durable if they are made well and alloyed correctly the cuban will be much stronger you should see how a rope chain is made. Not enough people learn how the process of their chains are done you can find vids right here on UA-cam for that but in today's manufacturing chains are kinda crappy unless it's handmade that's what you pay for that's the premium

    I bought a hallow figaro chain, i didnt know anything about gold and it was my first chain. I was disappointed when learning more about gold because i got ripped off by the fancy jewelry store. Ive had it 4months now, ive slept w it on accident, showered w it, its my daily chain no complaints but yes it feels weak. I dented it on purpose just from being curious on what hallow was smash

    I don’t have experience with hollow rope chains, but I bought a hollow figaro chain from a big retailer. It broke 3 times on me and I had a diamond pendant luckily I didn’t lose it so I sold it as scrap and bought me a flat curb. It really isn’t worth it just save up for the solid piece. Peace ✌️

    I have to concur...avoid hollow chains. I had a hollow bracelet a while back and it just looked oddly puffy...I wore it pretty much daily and it got a number of weird dents on it and overall looked cheap. Not to mention a hollow chain/bracelet will FEEL cheap and move in an unnatural way because the lack of proper weight for the size.

      This answer right here. You'll never accidentally smush a solid chain, however I have a hollow cuban that has a nice deep valley dent in one of the links because I closed it in the car door once.
