Huge carved stone stands out on the moors - whats its story?

This mystifying big stone can be found on Tatham moors on the Yorkshire - Lancashire border, whats its story?
What we are looking at is the imaginatively named big stone, or The Great stone of fourstones.
The big stone will be familiar to geologists as a glacial erratic, transported here by a glacier then left behind when the ice sheets retreated
Standing at around 18ft or 5.5m tall. The name alludes to there once being 3 other stones, which seem to have disappeared, presumably they were smaller and perhaps were broken up to build with? Nearby on the old map is Clap stone, whether this is still there or whether it was one of the 4 I'm not sure. Its certainly not visible from the big stone.
Some kind and long since departed person has carved 14 steps to one side to help ascend the mighty rock.
Inevitably the rock has been marked by people inscribing their names. Some of the writing is quite ornate and quite old.
Local myths say that the devil dropped the rock on his way to build Devils Bridge at Kirkby Lonsdale around 11 miles away.
On clear days Yorkshires 3 peaks are visible from the vantage point of the rock, Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen Y Ghent, though Pen Y Ghent was lost in the cloud today.
