Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to Arviat, Nunavut Island, to a place called Sentry Island in Hudson Bay in northeast Canada. This wind swept land of rock and ice is a nearly inhospitable place but indigenous people have scraped out a living here for untold eons. When the ice melts in the summer, the natives can fish, but in the brutal winters, ice covers the water and land, and the humans frequently come face to face with the worlds largest bear species in competition for a common food source, seals. The polar bear is renowned as being one of the very few bear species who stalks human beings and considers them as a part of the ecosystem. There are no trees to climb here. The only avenues for escape are the open seas or to run across the open ground. The polar bear can run 35 miles per hour and swim for days on end, so neither of those options is viable. That leaves only yourself as a means of self defense, escape or protection.
Aaron Gibbons was a 31 year old father of 1 son and 3 daughters and a member of the Inuit community. He was known for being a great hunter and providing meat for needy members of the community as well as being a dedicated family man. His friends would describe him as having never lost his temper which is quite a feat with 4 young children.
On July 3rd, 2018 Aaron loaded up his 4 children and his .22 LR firearm into his boat. The group planned to go to Sentry Island to harvest bird eggs and have a fun family day. They departed Arviat, their 2500 person community, and motored the 10 miles to the island.
Aaron’s children, who are all elementary school age, piled off the boat and immediately started playing and running around. They were carefree with no stress in their lives, as the warmth of the summer energized them as it does to young people. Their dad secured the boat on the rocky shore and began making his way toward the kids.
Aaron instructed the kids on what to look for when gathering the eggs and how to avoid any problems with defensive bird parents and turned the vivacious kids loose! They ran around finding and seeking their seasonal delicacy as if Mother Nature sponsored an Easter Egg hunt a few months too late.
As the children amassed a growing collection of bird eggs, Aaron’s mind slipped into a bit of a mental recess, and reflection for a moment. He is hastily snapped out of it when he sees a huge white mass stealthily moving in the direction of his kids.
At this time of year, most polar bears are essentially doing what their brown bear cousins do in the winter, a sort of summer hibernation. They don’t find a den or bury themselves but they do lay around and wait for cooler temperatures to prevail while living off of the body fat they have amassed over the winter hunting period. The only polar bears that do not do this are the desperate, starving ones.
As the large white mass slowly morphs into what Aaron recognizes as a polar bear, Aaron knows he will have to intervene. This bear is not playing. It is not just curious. It is sneaking up on his daughter while she plays and gathers eggs.
Aaron heeds the demeanor of the polar bear. Its head is down and ears are back. It is moving slowly and watching the children as they dart from nest to nest. It carefully examines its most hidden approach avenues and slowly closes the distance between the children and himself.
Aaron knows this is a dire situation and immediately puts a plan of action into place. He orders his kids to run to the boat immediately as he runs toward them and gathers rocks. His 22 long rifle firearm is in his boat and that is in the other direction so Aaron utilizes the weapons he has on hand, baseball sized stones.
As the kids run toward the safety of the boat, the polar bear starts to quickly close the distance between them. Aaron intercepts their path and lobs the rocks at the bear and yells in an attempt to scare it off. The rocks pelt the side of the bear which stops and looks it all over for a few seconds. The bear is in bad shape and hungry, it cannot be frightened away from a needed opportunity to feed and starts to focus on Aaron.

For an experienced Hunter, why he would leave his rifle in a boat and not keep it on his person is a beyond belief. Also the fact that his children didnt think to pick up the rifle and use it on the polar bear is tragic. You'd think that a community that shares territory with one of the worlds deadliest predators would arm its children or atleast teach them how to handle a rifle, although im not sure a .22 would do anything to a polar bear to begin with other than piss it off honestly.

I'm not a hunter but a fisherman & do many other outdoor activities..I own 3 firearms my kids & wife all own at least 1 firearm..The reasons is we have Black bear & Grey Wolves on our land that we have encountered many times over the years..The first thing we do is grab a firearm when we go in the woodlands rather fishing, hiking, riding 4-wheelers, ect. Any time we see either a Bear or a Wolf we shoot a shot in the air.. I've noticed that they don't even get within 75 yards & take off running just by knowing our presence now..We have a plan before we go out every time..We practice sceneries just in case of a situation..Thank God that we never had a close call..My message is if you're gonna live or be where dangerous animals live have a plan before going out in their environment 🙏

I know this is offensive to some sensibilities but if city's hire hound Hunters for bear and cougar pursuit seasons to scare cougar and bear away from cities a few times a year the bears will actually be conditioned to fear the bark of dogs and will completely avoid most human establishments over time. It may not be a clean way to do it but it's definitely better than shooting them for Just trying to survive.

My 80 acre farm is nestled the parkland boreal forest in Central Alberta, Canada.
Like your area, there are wolves, coyotes, black bear, and cougar here.
There are also deer, moose and elk, which will also charge tbe unwary during certain seasons of the year
My main form of protection are my Maremmas and I will not venture out past the buildings without at least one of them there tp protect me.
Over the past 12 years, they have done a fantastic job keeping the predators away so that the need to shoot at tnything has yet to arise. But one can never be too confident.
And now the Canadian Liberal Government want to take our rifles away.

When you knowingly enter into a territory where you know that monsters are lurking you would think that one would be a little more wary. Instead, he brings his four children to an isolated area and he knows there could be polar bears in the area.Becoming complacent in a situation like this is the reason he’s where he’s at. First of all, he should have never let his children wander around without any supervision in an area where he knew there was a possibility that they could be attacked by a polar bear. Number two, he stupidly leaves his weapon in his boat! Now, he has put his children’s lives at risk and he sacrificed his self because he became complacentAnd careless! And now Canadians are losing their ability to even own handguns.
Which I feel is particularly egregious, because ideally if I were to pick a weapon to have on my person as I go about gathering things, I would actually pick a 10mm 1911/2011 over virtually anything else.
Don't get me wrong, I love me a good .308, .30-06, 7mm mag, etc. and in terms of shear stopping power nothing touches the good ole shotgun in 8/10/12 gauge.
But for portability, ease of draw, and being able to deploy it after I've been tossed about, I think a 10mm handgun specifically has the best characteristics of a handgun for bear defense.
Plenty of knockdown, plenty of stopping power, accuracy is amazing, and the guns tend to be weighty with good shooting characteristics.

I feel terrible for his kids and the whole event was awful, but I believe this man, particularly being native to the area and being a hunter, acted irresponsibly. He went to the place where he should reasonably know Polar bears and other dangerous creatures might be with his young children. He brings only a .22LR and leaves it in the boat. He does go forward and uses rocks to scare the bear off and get the kids to the boat; that was good, but then when it doesn't work, he panics (which at this point, is practically impossible not to do) and runs towards the boat, bringing the bear towards the kids. He gets attacked and eaten, sadly. However, he was the adult and he made some errors in judgement. I thank God the kids weren't mauled and eaten. Hopefully, they are not too disturbed by this incident to lead happy, productive lives. What a sorry event. God bless the man for the efforts he did make and God bless those little ones.
