My God what an arresting opening to the first movement!. Passion and youthful ardour abound in this heated performance. One can forgive a false note or two with such communicative playing. The slow movement is simply gorgeous with a lovely dialogue achieved between piano and orchestra.
A superb orchestral support with sensuous string tone from Rozhdestvensky and the BBC S.O.

Raw… when necessary, sensual, powerful from both this iconic pianist and her husband and orchestra. This performance is ALIVE, crackling with energy, sumptuousness, and emotion.

Intense, passionate and full of emotion. Russian interpretation at its most inspired. Piano students note that the score is only the starting point.

Concerto No.1 is an acquired taste for me. No.2 and 3 were favourites, but now addicted to No.1. First heard through HJ Lim performance (rock & roll style!), but Viktoria Postnikova's is something else and does open my eyes. Maybe just me, but I think it takes a Russian to play a Russian composition properly, with the true motherland emotion/tragedy/joy as intended by the composer. After all, most compositions would be influenced by events (historical/cultural/political) of that particular country, at that time. Memorable sections 11-13, 14.30-16.40, 23-25.30. Melodies abound.

I was there. Front row, resting my head on both hand, white tee shirt. Stunned by her brilliance.
Is this your own recording? It is good, but, not of TX quality :-) I worked at the BBC in the VT department back then you see...
Have you got any other Proms videos? I have many stereo audios tapes from back then - recorded automatically as I was there every night.

Viktoria Postnikova her Tchaikovsky piano concerto no 1 playing in Tchaikovsky piano competition in 1970 was The Best Better than Vladimir Krainev's John Lill( John played Anti-Tchaikovsky! Why John Lill You played anti romantic fashion) Horacio Gutierrez and Moreira-Lima! If You called The competition Tchaikovsky competition then The Winner should play The Best Tchaikovsky piano concerto no 1!

spectacular playing, i was fortunate to hear this. i wonder if this is how
Rachmaninoff would have played his first piano concerto.

I believe Rach's own recording is stil available, so with a bit of digging you could probably find out for yourself..

    • @cynic150

I have the old Rach concerto recordings. The piano part is so clear all the way through. But here, the orchestra is better recorded - perhaps a little too loud in places; Viktoria does not always project the tone well in the soft places. Her technique was terrific. Her phrasing style was sometimes a little too exaggerated for me, but mostly comes off.

Like Horowitz or Rubenstein...a few stray notes here and there...but what of it...this is Rachmaninoff from the fingers of one who knows. Yes, beautifully accompanied. One would expect no less.
