Tysons - America's Next Great City?

- Tysons. A Washington DC suburb with an interesting history and major ambitions. Tysons is located about halfway between Washington DC and Washington Dulles international Airport. Back in the 1950s, Tysons was nothing but rural farmland. But everything changed in the 1960s, with the construction of Tysons Corner Center, the largest mall in the DC area. This, combined with the suburbanization that had affected many cities around this time, and Tysons started to grow rapidly. Countless corporations and tech have relocated to the area, with major corporations like Capital One and Hilton headquartered here. And the growth that has come with this has changed the Tysons skyline into a more urban setting with a lot of skyscrapers under construction and planned. Despite growing up as primarily a suburban office park, there is a major urbanization plan to grow Tysons from a tiny census-designated place only home to 20,000 people today to a new city, home to over 100,000 people and 200,000 jobs, all by 2050. This is by far one of the most ambitious urbanization goals in the country, but is this even possible? Let’s take a look at the rise of Tysons!

Good plan since DC and Arlington refuse to build hi rises due to the height limit. Tyson building boom will soon surpass Richmond in the near future. I wish Alexandria, va had a building boom and height like tyson since it is closer to I-95.
I lived in Vienna, VA 45 years ago. I used to work at Wolf Trap, nearby. I'd never recognize Tyson's today. Amazing growth.

Yeah, most people in the DMV rave about Tyson’s. I drive past here going to school everyday, they are definitely building it up a lot with luxury apartments, office buildings etc. great vid bro!!!

Not for long. A couple skyscrapers are planned to be built in Raleigh being around 700 feet tall

@@reginaldsuggs4630 they were approved just prior to Covid but I believe they might’ve postponed the start construction date to 2028. However, if the Hurricanes do manage to get their downtown arena, it will likely be at the red hat amphitheater and the city will rush back on the project which will have a hotel and a bunch of offices and stuff. Hurricanes would likely move their headquarters into that building

I used to work in the mall we used to play around at the mall when we were kids I love Tysons corner mall
It seems this city was thought for vehicles not for pedestrians.....so it needs to build more city parks, squares and pedestrian friendly areas (Something like The Mosaic District in Merifield.).....Despite of that it looks very modern and sophisticated! 😊
This is 100% true. I've been in the area numerous times and it's basically a giant car-centric suburban office park that is trying to transition into a walkable urban core. A lot of progress and development has occurred over the years and it's definitely improving but it still has a long way to go until it can become a true walkable urban core. I do think though that it was a huge mistake to not burry the Metro underground when it was build through Tysons like they did in Arlington. Yes it would've costed more money but it would've made it much easier to make the area more walkable and urban (Think Arlington, Virginia). Because the Metro is above ground, it's similar to the highways in terms of dividing areas and taking up valuable space.
@@jonesrmj Hmm, i think it was built at a crossroad of turnpikes that crosses the town from one end to the other......I checked and they are developing some 40 acress for parks and mix-use spaces, but don't know at what stage they are at present.
Doubful Tyson alone will grow into a great city, but the whole region of Northern Virginia seems to be growing fast and will become a true "great city" sometime this decade.

Due to DC causing suburban sprawl.
I disagree when you said "if Tysons wants to become a real city it needs to reorganize it's streets into a grid pattern." I disagree because for transit-oriented development, grid patterns create lots of intersections which can be good for pedestrians but tough on transit vehicles and bike riders. Instead, building a vast network of bike paths (NOT multi-use paths) is super possible here where a grid pattern is not constructed, helping commuters cut across town in wig-wag ways not possible in a grid structure. Thanks :)

Great video. As a frequent visitor to Tysons, I don't see it ever being the true urban place they envision. It will always be a suburban office park type area with a few pockets of dense development. Wide streets are not going away. Check out Silver Spring or Bethesda or Roslyn for true urban suburbs.
Yeah, I've been to Tysons a lot too, and I agree. I think there will definitely be pockets of areas that will feel more urban, but the really wide roads need to be narrowed with a slower speed limit to make Tysons feel more urban.
@@jonesrmj Once Tyson do it while widening the sidewalks and adding more cross walks, then it will surpass bethasa, silver springs and Downtown Alrington.
They've aleady starting demolishing the office buildings and building dense housing on the parking lots.
I have a question. Where did you get the drone footage in this video? I’m a part 107 commercial drone pilot and the entire reason I got my license was to fly and capture the rapid urbanization in Tysons Corner. I cannot seem to get past it!
I just look up free stock footage online.

They're doing the same in a town south Weymouth which is close to Boston. They're redeveloping a air base into a city since Boston has the same height limit issues as DC and Arlington. Also, a neighboring city cambridge has left there heigh limit due to lack of highrise growth in Boston.
Why does anywhere need a grid system to be a successful city? Europe fares well without the grid system
More likely suburban sprawl.
DC metro is already a suburban sprawl due to lack of hi rises within DC and nearby.
