I decided to rebind an old copy of the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Using some traditional bookbinding techniques, we try to make a slightly more unconventional tome using leather, LED filament, and even som real silver metal casting!
📕 We also have a bookbinding course if you're interested in learning how to create personal books like this from scratch! / nerdforge ✨

Did she paste the cords to the spine or sewed them?
I was exactly thinking the same thing on that
As a jeweler, it was great to see you explore metal casting, and you did it SO WELL! Amazing art, congratulations!
Love that instead of going with the gold, like the one ring, you went with the silver, like Mitril, and the elves jewelry. Also, the leaves of lorien.

I would have made the blue leather a deep green instead to reflect the Shire, but the blue looks amazing too! Great work!
My thought exactly and probably brown instead of black
Oooh green's my favorite
Yes. I was envisioning a deep red, both for The Red Book and for Mordor. To be fair, though, you could make almost any colour work symbolically: gold for the Ring, black for the shadow of evil, brown in praise of humility. It's a bit tenuous, but blue could be for the hope of transcendent beauty in the light of the stars, which is such an important theme in the story.
@@claytonbarnes6644yes!!
I wasn't sure about that blue until she added silver and silver metal casting. It's works so well.

For a larger book like this, maybe you could even partner with a more technical channel to even make a device that causes the cover to change what is lit up depending on which part of the book you're reading at the time, based on where the bookmark is.
(In this case, for instance, it could light up an image of the Shire early on, then the 2 towers later on, and finally light up Mt. Doom close to the end.)
I see what your saying. However, replace Mount Doom with Minas Tirith where Aragorn is crowned King. The last book is called "Return of the King" after all.

well - If the book is from 1800 taking away the original cover would be completely wrong .
@@romainvicta3076 The most important thing of a book is the content and not the cover. And the only case that changing the original cover is wrong is if the book is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If not, the owner can do whatever he wants with the cover of book, after all, was he that acquired, it's his book and doesn't belong to anyone else. In fact, the most sensible thing to do with a very old book is to change the old cover for a new one before the sheets paper coming loose and getting lost.
There’s something so potent about the iconography of the Lord Of The Rings color-scheme being completely reserved for the symbol in the center. This book belongs to our modern era where all the magic of old has dwindled and only a small glimmer of potent light remains. It’s a gorgeous creation.
Tell me about it. There's something sacred about that edition. I remember when I was 8-9 and I got it from my uncle. It felt so different from my cheap fantasy paperbacks. Watching her turn it into a twitch streamer version of it hurt. Not going to lie.

I have the entire Chronicles of Narnia series bound in a custom leather book. My parents gifted it to me for Christmas-it’s beautiful. There are people on Etsy who will do this and they’re very good too. Some already do Chronicles of Narnia now without having to ask for it custom made. After you've poured the molten metal into the mold, don't put it in water. That makes it more brittle, easy to break, and corrodes easier, and doesn't last as long. Let it cool down very very slowly. The slower it cools the better the metal will be when it finally sets and is totally cools. The molecules set much better, and much stronger, when its the slowest possible time to cool.
or you could just anneal it later. but same difference in time required so yeah, natural cooldown.
Sorry, isn’t it the exact opposite? That’s what quenching is.
@@ifyouseekay594 yes. You quench steel in between heating and shaping. But that’s the point. With steel, you are intentionally trying to harden it, which does make it more brittle. But once you have it shaped, you put it in the oven or anneal it in order to cool it down slower. It’s a balance of hardness and softness with steel, because it’s a tool. With decorative metals, slower is better.
@@ifyouseekay594 Better to quench in oil instead of water as water runs the risk shattering the metal. Generally for decorative metals you don't need to temper but it cannot hurt.
Note: quenching properly will not make it brittle if the metal is forged properly, but quenching a molten cast is always a bad idea.
I did casting with the lost wax process. It uses a speciality wax that has a plaster covering and the wax is melted out and then the silver is poured in.
When you did the painting, the colors look so cool and nice on the book
