The Red River runs north. It is one of only three rivers in the world to do so. The problem with drainage of the Red river, is that there was no major diversion project SOUTH of Grand Forks and Fargo, and also south of Grand Forks, which would have diverted the water AROUND both Fargo and Grand Forks. Even stranger is the fact that the farmland south of Fargo was not being used as a flood plain. Why? Simple; Rich farmers in that area said that it should not happen, and so Fargo and Grand Forks flooded, and hundreds of thousands of people lost billions of dollars. Rich farmers lost nothing.
