Schwalbe G-One Overland: Seriously tough steamroller gravel tyres

Schwalbe's G-One Overland Gravel Tires take a lot of construction, compound and tread tech from the German brands mountain bike tires to create an unstoppable steam roller choice. But are they as fast as they look and are they as tough on the rider as they are on the trail?

I ride them now for 600km in 40mm. They replaced the g-one r and I never looked back. For me they feel a bit different than the R, but definitely not slower. They are cheaper, the grip on gravel is better, the grip on tarmac (wet and dry) is better and the grip in mud is surprisingly better too. And that’s a big surprise, because the knobs are more tightly. I think the big knobs at the side come into play, when the tire sinks into the mud, like small shovels. Ok it’s a bit heavier than the g one r. But I love it for commuting, bikepacking and funrides on nearly every ground. The one to rule them all, if you ride lots of different kinds of ground.

I think that we're beginning to see a crossover of Gravel tires and XC tires. Very fast rolling XC tires are looking a lot like Gravel tires and Gravel tires are getting wider. The 2.2 Continental Race King, 2.35 Schwalbe Thunder Burt, 2.4 Vittoria Peyote, 2.4 Maxxis Aspen ST, are just a few of the XC tires that might make very good Gravel tires. Maybe Gravel bikes should come with clearance for 2.4 tires?

I think that's the way it's going.
Fast 29er MTB tyres are already being ridden in proper gravel races and it's been said ( I don't know how proven?) that certain high volume MTB tyres are actually faster than a lot of smaller volume gravel tyres.
I think we will see a lot of race gravel bikes with clearance for 29 X 2.2 tyres coming soon!

Seems like a good tyre for my usage but wondering how they would go against thorns (Bindi) ?
This stuff is a nightmare where i live. I would be using them with tubes too.

Using the overland in 45mm on my Giant Revolt Advanced for like 12 months now. There's nothing this tire can't do and after like 2000 km in gravel and commuting it's still as good as new. Mostly underestimated tire in Schwalbes lineup. I'll stick with it as long as Schwalbe will sell it.

Hi Guy, do you have any recommendations for a tyre suited to touring on a gravel bike? I'll be doing a two-week tour along Germany's Baltic coast in September with friends on my Planet X Tempest (your review helped me zero in on that one, although the Termpest design has been upgraded since) and some of my friends will be using traditional Dawes Galaxy style tourers. The Tempest comes with Panaracer Comet Hardpacks which are fine on the trails where I live (Fulford in York - I ride the same trails you did on your test around Heslington iirc) but as the tour will be 90% on tarmac I'm looking for some more road-focussed tyres that can still do the odd bit of gravel.
