we were never asked, and our Grandparents have always been quite against this, while the latter generations had to be constantly browbeaten into reluctantly accepting this from school propaganda. Most soon learn once out of school the truth.
The Morris Dancers should have pushed back against this and stood their ground but they caved in and basically agreed that what they’re doing is offensive. It’s about time that some backbone was shown in order to prevent our history and culture from being erased. The more it’s allowed to happen the more it will continue. Pub names and street names are being changed and people portraying miners or chimney sweeps are being told not to blacken their faces for fear of causing offence indeed an American diner of colour was outraged by a photo in a restaurant depicting a group of Welsh miners in 1912. He claimed to see only offensive ‘blackface’ Let’s put our feet down and refuse to comply with Wokeness!
Well said Winco. In Bristol they are changing the name of the Black Boy Inn on Black Boy Hill, both named after the dark haired King Charles II. Apparently use f the word Black some 350 years ago offends some of the Black people who have lived in Bristol since 1954, because some chippy Marxists say it does.
@@stephfoxwell4620 Well it was fine 350 years ago. But times change. It's a bit like how most people got rid of anything with the word "gay" in it. Because it doesn't have the same meaning it did hundreds of years ago lol
@@stephfoxwell4620 Absolutely. In fact there are derivatives of ‘black’ everywhere none of which are racial so why should they be changed? To appease a demographic who in the main have resided here for less than 70 years? In regard to pubs many were called ‘Black Boy’ in honour of someone in particular or in general but not exclusively. As you mentioned there is a link to the monarchy. In other areas they are in honour of young chimney sweeps and in Northern England they honoured child miners as the boys emerged from the ground covered in coal dust. In areas of England where the Normans had prevailed ‘boy’ emerged from ‘Bois’ the French word for wood hence BlackWood. Surely education is the solution as I have yet to find an instance of there being a racial connotation. History should be treasured not trashed.
The key element of all this, is the word “fear“.If these good people have resorted to green faces, simply because of the ‘fear’ of offense, then they have subjected themselves to an entirely fictitious and, indeed, vindictive nonsense, which is seeking to destroy our traditions and our culture. Even though he, obviously, did not deserve to perish in the way in which he did, George Floyd was, nevertheless, as you describe. If you think this is just about addressing a "racist" tradition ie blackface your sorely mistaken. On the surface that is true but the deeper intent is to dismantle another piece of British culture and further sever the connection of white britains to their past and ownership of their own country. Think of it as a length rope that connects white Britons, ie British people, to Britains past. Every time they do this they sever a cord in that rope. And they sever the connection. And ownership.
Exactly the same is happening with the destruction and belittling of popular fictional characters and franchises. I read the Daily Mail article yesterday (27th December) and was similarly dismayed, Simon. I guess the decision of the Morris dancers was, ultimately, inevitable in this era of woke, but at the same it is incredibly sad. The most astonishing thing is that the dance team didn't feel sufficiently confident, or comfortable, to explain the history of the black face in the Morris tradition and thereby take the opportunity to educate people less familiar with an ancient and most wonderful aspect of British cultural history. I have always found it incredibly sad how so many city-dwellers in this country think it amusing to mock and ridicule this great and ancient piece of British history, heritage and culture. I strongly believe that traditions such as Morris dancing need to be celebrated and their reach extended. Breaking traditions and customs in the way that the Herefordshire Morris dancers have, only serves to dilute and diminish British culture and heritage and plays directly into the hands of those who seek to perpetuate and control the currently popular woke narrative of our day. How ever will future generations view us? How will they judge us for having eroded wonderful traditions such as Morris dancing? For these reasons I think that the decision of the Herefordshire Morris dancers is a travesty and a tragedy! Apologies for my rant but I feel profoundly passionate about issues such as this. For a few years now the Morris Ring has put pressure on Morris teams who traditionally blacked up to desist or use a different colour. In the 1980's I was responsible for bringing the Britannia Coconut Dancers over to the Isle of Man for a festival. They were then (and I'm sure are now) a great bunch of blokes, and I'm glad to see they resisted the Morris Ring's policy on blacking up. It eventually meant they left that organisation, which is very sad and so unnecessary. The Coconutters were apparently supported by a BAME organisation which agreed the blacking up was nothing to do with black people and, furthermore, should be supported as part of our cultural history. I've said here before, and say again: much of this nonsense is brought about by white British people, and that fact needs to be recognised and addressed. By that I mean that the sorts of sincere comments on Simon's videos need to be aired more widely - without the lazy accusations of racism - to counter the current narrative.
Same happened in Spain a few years ago. Look up "Moro de Antzuola". It was an ancient festival celebrating the defeat of a Moorish army in the 13th century. In the yearly festival, the defeated moor king was made to kneel in front of the Christian king... And we can't have that.
Thank you for this enlightening little nugget of history, a subject which could easily be misinterpreted laid bare and revealing a whole world of curious covert goings on. Much obliged. Keep up the good work.
There's a lot more to the history of morris dancing than "it's a British tradition". It came from dances in various European courts, and they called their dances 'moorish dancing'. OK, the English adapted it into something unique, but it clearly retains bells, bright white clothing, rhythmic dance, and black face... i.e. what North Africans and Moors in Spain were perceived to look and sound like. The problem is that morris dancing is so old that it genuinely IS part of our history, rather than being a more recent fad like the Black and White Minstrels, or white comedians pretending to be Jamaican or whatever. Not all morris dancers use blackface. If they all stop using it, the spectacle wouldn't lose anything. There are plenty of other completely nutty features of morris dancing to keep any real ale drinker happy on a summer's afternoon. It's certainly nothing for us white English people to start crying about. It'll just be another evolution taking place. i.e. It'll be more history happening.

I wonder how it would be if certain 'Titania McGrath' types might 'explain' to the Wodaabe that, in fact, such centuries-old customs might not actually be appropriate in our modern world? (Except nobody would be stupid enough or indeed entitled enough to suggest that...) To paraphrase Mr. Orwell, it would seem that 'All cultures are equal, BUT some are more equal than others...' xx SF
I ran into some Green-face dancers in Birmingham during one of the Freedom rallies: I'd brought my melodion - a harmonica with bellows - so asked why their player wore a mask, only to be accused of being an antivaxer (by his wife; also masked). These are not brave people.

We never "chose" we were never asked.
we were never asked, and our Grandparents have always been quite against this, while the latter generations had to be constantly browbeaten into reluctantly accepting this from school propaganda. Most soon learn once out of school the truth.
English people weren't offered a choice. Had they been, their answer would have been no.

I`m one of those knight (Cavalliere -Cabaleros) who defeat the SARACENS...(Moors) ,the nex war is getting closer and closer...amen !
"We're not racist but'.........resentment is creeping in as we are not allowed to be who we are...... Can you see it yet?
@@dansmithwave Sounds like you didn't take in anything in the video, which is your prerogative, however, just because you believe it passable to selectively censor and rewrite history to drive home false, contextually absurd accusations against an entire race in order to blackmail them for victim perks does not make it so, nor a positive evolution in any sense.
@@JesseP.Watson The video claims that the blackface in morris dancing is "nothing to do with black people", which is incorrect.
Also, claiming that we've done something for 500 years, so it shouldn't be changed now "just because it upsets some people" is blatant nonsense. We evolve our behaviour continuously, and always have done. It happens according to the wishes of the majority of people, not a handful who claim they want to save some convenient and pointless "little bit of British history".
n.b. I'm just putting a small part of the alternative viewpoint here. Not looking to get into a long drawn-out argument. 👋
@@dansmithwave Think we've all heard more than enough of the alternative argument ovrr the past couple of years old chap.
@@JesseP.Watson Well, the current direction of travel is really not going to be reversed. Toppled statues of slave traders are not going to be re-erected; comedians aren't going to go back to telling homophobic jokes or talking in West Indian accents; people of colour are not going to go back to being excluded from films about wars they fought in; and morris dancers are fine with tweaking the colour of their makeup.
The guy who does this channel has his fans, and he has the freedom to say what he does, but in the end he's merely pointing out that the past is a different country, and people are completely out of touch there. 😉
I went to S africa four years ago and low and behold there was overwhelming numbers of black people, however i wasnt offended because i was a visitor to a foreign country.....amazing that isnt it.
Do any Brummies remember 'Gollywogs' the exhaust center on the Moseley Rd ?.... The sign outside said "We don't put jam in jars.... We put exhausts on cars". That was in the 80's .
Good days
Yes I remember that one!! How things have changed

It won’t stop until we’re all erased from our land. Most of us continue to vote for the establishment parties despite it being clear that we have become second-class citizens in our own country. Our only hope is to propel a political party into power that is very vocal on this issue. They exist. But we seemingly can’t resist voting for those who are clearly opposed to everything we believe in. I despair.
That's not true, the torries said they would address these issues and we were lied too again. Its not the people that's the problem its Westminster and the royals that are ruining this place.
@@thelastofus2872 I understand what you’re saying. I’m more referring to the local elections that we’ve had since the last GE. Opportunities to ‘make a statement’, to have a ‘protest vote’, were wasted, as people voted for either Labour or Lib Dem. Look at polling right now - the Labour Party is way ahead.
We will see if I’m correct come the next GE. I’d bet lots of money on being correct, if I had any.
@@mallard4495 The polling is nothing more than manufactured consent, its all bogus. Yes I understand you think we have a choice, but in reality since the end of the world war we haven't had a choice. The same people behind the scenes make sure the regime and agenda doesn't change regardless of politics. This doesn't excuse the lies and deceit from our political parties it makes it even worse.
We have no right to stop them, they were passed to us to pass forward.
I thought 'Morris' was a corruption of 'Moorish'. The dancers blacked their faces to look as 'Blackamoors'. So that is black people!
This nonsense is highly patronising to black people. It suggests that they lack the intellectual robustness to appreciate English customs objectively without seeing them as a personal affront. This is an insult to black people.
If I went to a Muslim country and the people were hiding Islamic symbols to avoid upsetting me, I'd find it quite insulting.
If I saw a traditional African dance where the dancers always painted their faces white but in deference to me, painted them green instead, I'd be insulted.
Malcolm X said the white liberal was the most dangerous! He should have added patronising too.
You're right. That's the origin as locals hazily recall the Dance of the Dervishes sword dancing practised by Barbary Coast pirates around their camp fires; they used Cornwall as base camp for their white slavery expeditions around the coastline of the British Isles.
Shrewsbury folk festival banned blackface morris in 2017 after receiving one, single complaint from a pro diversity & inclusion group.
Again, why don't we just tell them to get lost and that it's a tradition.
Shame on Shrewsbury, Long Live The Morris in all its tradition and guises.
Much better to have black face for crime purposes. Some don't need soot.
I have a mate who sweeps chimneys..... He also gets paid to attend weddings dressed as a sweep.... He looks great 'Blacked' up.
Well those Morris Dancers are cowards for doing it...
There should be a new offence of: Interfering with or demeaning or any misapproriation, misrepresentation or any other action which seeks to undermine British embraced culture and tradition: real or tacit.
Penalty? Immediate deportation.
Not a 'petty' thief. That Floyd thing terrorised a pregnant woman with a gun whilst others ransacked and robbed her home. Sorry but I wouldn't call that petty. He was also driving a car while under the influence.
ITN a couple of years back went over to the Netherlands to try and stir up trouble over how the Dutch celebrate Christmas. The self righteous reporting team dictated that Black Pete one of Santa's helpers who has blacked up for hundreds of years should be banned. Thankfully the people brushed off indignant reporters who shuffled off to their recording studio with their tales between their legs.... 😆
ITV, channel 4 ,sky, are all falling over

we should all be.
Yup. The new owners of a historic pub in Newcastle upon Tyne decided to change the venue name because they feared complaints - no one had complained. The pub name is a dark colour and name of a young man. It's a traditional local trade name given to the young assistant of a blacksmith.
We're losing our culture Simon.
Yeah the former "Blackyboy" pub in Newcastle. Now pathetically calked "Swarleys" after a former tenant. Laughably "Blackyboy" is still engraved in the stone work on the facesade.
@@occidentadvocate.9759 Clearly the stone is a racist 😁
My empathy levels for offending minorities are at an all time low.
Its pathetic how some of us curtail to a minority, who's history in the uk on the murder front and destruction when things don't suite them is synonimous.
The Makua people of Mozambique wear white paste makeup. As a white person I am so offended by this racist display that I am going to take a nap and forget about it in a few minutes.
I think those Morris Dancers should have stood their ground and educated their accusers as to the origins of the custom. The resulting publicity would have been well worth the hassle.
Won't greenface be insulting to lizard people?
Oh yes🤢🦎
I'd walk a million miles
For one of your smiles
My Mammy!
Was that a typo - did you mean Lammy?
However some time ago this subject came up on the Vine tv ch5 show. He and his bigoted guests were very quick to accuse the morris dancers of being racist.
Try telling Africans they cannot paint their bodies white for tribal dances and see how far you get.
The fable of the duck and the hens springs to mind .
I’ve spent many a wonderful day watching the Hereford Morris dancers at the Severn rivers festival in Chepstow. I would suggest that (as a protest) the spectators black their faces. I would
Yes, now that is a great idea, and if everybody done it, what a challenge that would be !! That would show them 😀
Shame on them for giving tradition - the very reason for the survival of Morris sides - such scant regard. There will be women in the Loose Chippings Morrismen next, you mark my words...
Seriously though, what is the point of traditional dance if it does not pass on its traditions? What do we now call it? Inauthentic Folk Dancing? Can you imagine this happening amongst the First Nations of Canada?
In the USA, the law forbids filming the traditional dances of the Hopi in order to protect them from derision and cultural appropriation. Why are the culture and traditions of the First Nations of Britain not given legal protection, when we give such protection to pasties, perry and pork pies?
I was truly sorry to hear that the Morris men had caved into wokism.
Absolutely true Sir 🙏
Your analysis is spot on as always.
A warrior's blue face should be more historically accurate, and not as humiliating. You can't cower yourself into satisfying those folk. Because nothing is ever going to satisfy socially destructive people .
i used to work down a coal mine.i got really black. so what.
Thats a very racist profession how dare you
Which one?
BLM causes terrific cultural damage ua-cam.com/video/LTG5N7lhOOg/v-deo.html
What a terrible loss. It reminds me of the loss of the coal industry communities. That were annihilated by Thatcher. No one could disagree it was time for a change but it was the blunt cruelty with which it was enforced. Rather than a gradual move to new industries, allowing the communities to cope. We all remember how much the coal industry communities gave to war effort in both world wars apart from Thatcher. Churchill would have been appalled.
@phil Taylor: Churchill had striking miners shot.
@@longjonwhite Historical myth Edit
The Tonypandy riots are subject of a popular historical myth that troops fired on the miners.[14][15][16] Josephine Tey refers to this in her novel The Daughter of Time, and coined the term "tonypandy" to refer to "when a historical event is reported and memorialized inaccurately but consistently until the resulting fiction is believed to be the truth."[17]
@@longjonwhite Please provide a credible historical source for this long discredited claim. Good luck!
Another part of English history is lost due to our Woke Establishment and our inability to de-throne it.
You know villages throughout the whole of the UK often have traditions unique to their area, which if your lucky you might stumble across. This is the (or was) the beauty of our nation. Now thanks to the politicians each of us voted in - this is lost and we are nothing. We really need to think before we vote - think, question then vote - before all is gone - forever.
Another black page... oh wait... something rather obscene crossed my mind but I will spare everyone present... this nonsense will eventually stop. The sooner the better. The later the delay the more abruptly it will end...
Insane how a people is told to deny themselves the right to self expression so as not to offend a minority that has only been there for a few hundred years.
70 years, not a few hundred.
... " a minority that has only been there for a few hundred years "
Try, been here for LESS than one hundred years!
So true - you wonder how we got to this insanity
A few hundred? less than 70,this is in England!

It makes me very angry that great british traditions that are very important historically to communities up and down the country are being pressured into stopping or changing their historical indentity incase uneducated and narrow minded people feel offended by their customs its an utter disgrace
They're either very shallow, or very selfish. Thinking that anything black is mocking them , or that anything black belongs solely to them.

The Wodaabe people of Mali/Niger have, for hundreds of years, danced in what might be termed 'whiteface'. (It's not of course, it doesn't reference 'whites' and it's purely decorative...) To us in the West, this seems bizzare perhaps, but it is also quite a spectacle, even beautiful and is, of course, a deep-rooted part of that people's culture.
This history of ours is not lost, it is merely underground, and every single time another one of these childish things happens more and more people lean towards the terrible "R" word. Eventually this history will emerge again, but it will be to a far less grey world.
My late Dad used to regularly say he wished that the BBC would bring back the Black and White Minstrel show…😂
