    You have a good start, I personally found the title cards cheesy. Like you took mark browns video game box art shtick and put it on a parchment text box. Slick, but kinda cheesy. Still gotta give you props for making something. Though I think the title leans too far into clickbate. You spend the first 3/4 of the video explaining the immense impact the game had before then rightfully criticizing the heart mechanic. Feels like you miss the mark. Maybe “Zelda has a Heart problem” etc. would fit more with the actual tone.
    Since you are new I don’t mind so much, but I would just immediately click off a larger channel if they are claiming to have a spicy take and then never deliver.

    great video, but..... cringe-worthy clickbait title. i mean, it worked, i watched it because of the title thinking i was going to get to listen to some jerk expound on his jerkiness, and instead got a thoughtful critique on one of my favorite games.... but if you had called the video "A thoughtful critique on the design of The Legend of Zelda" i would have still clicked on it, and i wouldnt have felt.... cheated.

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  Рік тому

      Yeah my main focus for next videos is to decrease the clickbait. I have been on the internet my entire life so I have always thought of clickbait as being the solution to everything, but after creating some content I realized that I needed to be thinking more about how this content makes people feel. I'm going to work harder on making sure people perceive my stuff how I want them too!

    Just because you can't use an ability without full health in the first game, writing the game design of such an incredible and old franchise that has the sharpest and cleverest designs, sucks in the title and is possibly bad in the thumbnail is simply wrong and annoying even if you say you don't think so and say so in the video😅. Beside that, it was great seeing that analysis of exploration in games.

    What would you propose as fix of "after death, only 3 hearts replenished". All of them? That completely takes away meaning of game death. Instead of avoiding it, you would incorporate it to game strategy. Oh, I have low hearts, I could try to play better, or find better armor, or bring health potions with me or.. nah, just straight suicide and voila, better than ever. THAT would ruin the game mechanics. So, I found three hearts and beginning quite a sweet spot, not punishing you with complete game over (that I hate), but not giving you any reward either.

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  Рік тому

      With stuff like this I would say that there is no "fix". In fact I wouldn't change that aspect of this game for the life of me. The main point that I was exploring is how certain aspects of a game can conflict with the generic rules that we immediately think of today. Sadly today I bet the solution would in fact be to just let the player die on purpose and replenish hearts which is equally problematic. I guess I am saying that my "fix" would be to keep the game mechanic how it is just adjust the curve a bit. In later dungeons its nearly impossible to get enough hearts to fill your health. But your totally right just allowing players to die and come back would be DUMB!!!😂😂

    • @BetterThanDoomWithAZ
      @BetterThanDoomWithAZ Рік тому +2

      It sounds like your point is that players should be punished for dying (I agree), but they are punished for dying. You're sent all the way back to the start of the dungeon/overworld and have to fight those same enemies again. They still have to play better to reach the goal. This game's a little older than I am and you have to remember pretty much everyone that played games when this was released was a kid. The last 2 dungeons get pretty difficult. If a kid was having a tough time getting through a dungeon with 14 hearts, they're probably not going to take out a room full of Darknuts and Wizzrobes with 3 of them. So that's why I think it would be better to restore you to full health after the game over.

    • @GinaDriedUp
      @GinaDriedUp Рік тому

      I would agree with you if it wasn’t so easy to lose your hearts and so difficult to replenish them, or if you weren’t already punished by being sent back to the start of the overworld/dungeon and having to fight everything again.
      Plus, it makes the sword beam so rarely available that it might as well not exist by the time you get to the last three dungeons.

  • @GinaDriedUp

    Unlike most people here I was actually looking forward to watching you tear this game apart. I’m a zoomer who started gaming during the PS2/GameCube era, and this game goes against basically everything I’ve been accustomed to as a child. And because of this, I’ve gotten into one too many arguments with nostalgic zelda fans who *were* accustomed to it and felt the need to defend it.
    Sorry, but it’s not my fault I was born in the stupid generation. I can’t just magically grow the same nostalgia everyone else has.

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  11 місяців тому

      Your definitely not wrong about what you don't like about the game! Don't let people with nostalgia blindness tell you differently. Games age poorly its just a fact, but the fact that you gave this game a chance PROVES your not stupid! I will listen to a zoomer (WHO ACTUALLY TRIES STUFF) talk about why an old game is worse, over a millennial or boomer (WHO WONT EVEN TRY A NEWER TITLE) any day! I love that you were brave enough to leave a comment like this!

    Pretty good video, but like everyone else is saying you should probably change the thumbnail and title, throughout the video I had the feeling someone had hacked your channel and changed the title or something. One like "the design of the first Zelda" would be better

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  11 місяців тому

      Thank you for the feedback! I'm not sure yet if I will outright change the title and thumbnail. I kind of like having the visual of improving and if I "fix" the problem, then I lose the ability to look back at what was awful. But I might have to if you guys truly think it's necessary.

    In my opinion, open world games lose alot of the focus and pacing that more linear games have. Dark Souls struck an interesting balance and so did Zelda Ocarina of Time.

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  Рік тому

      It’s very difficult for something to feel guided and open at the same time! I definitely think that the balance is what caused Zelda OOT and dark souls to be so amazing.

    the problem with the heart system is how it scales with sword beams. this sort of formula reminds me of breath of fire 2 with ryu's dragon system where full damage is based off full AP and the problem is that as he levels up, he gains more AP thereby making it harder to fully restore it when he uses a dragon ability which uses up all AP. now the full heart system for sword beams or other abilities such as TP's great spin is a case of intrusive progression because there is no way to reverse the upgrade (although subverted in zelda 1's second quest where you can surrender 3 heart containers, but it is a permanent choice). botw and tears did have the scaling heart problem as well, however some fixes were made: hearts can be traded or sold at the horned statue and you can get them back whenever. cooking can also allow for temporary hearts and sword beam length and other weapons can be affected by the number of hearts.

    • @TheGhostyGames
      @TheGhostyGames  Рік тому

      I definitely agree that future Zelda titles improved in this way by a alot!

    • @chaosprime1629
      @chaosprime1629 Рік тому

      @@TheGhostyGames to be fair, i argue alttp was worse in how it handled sword beams. damage never scales during upgrades and the three heart run is naturally impossible. link's awakening (8 bit) also had this problem as well where 3 heart runs were impossible however ironically the remake adding more heart containers can lead to the health scaling issue. oracles did have the rings that allowed for early sword beams and other modifiers and the minish cap had the peril beam. skyward sword's mechanic had the charge time and ironically it was broken in hero mode because it carried over. so yeah, i think botw and tears handled it the best because you can remove the heart containers but also use temporary hearts for increased beam distance.
