I’ve watched Dinnerladies dozens and dozens of times! As a former Mobberley and Manchester girl who has lived in Australia for 35 years this show holds such an attraction for me. I never tire of it. 💛 RIP to a wonderful talent ...
"I'd never written a sitcom so I thought that was something I ought to have a crack at". Goes on to write, inarguably, one of the best sitcoms ever made. "Just give us a teabag and I'll suck it on me way 'ome".
Never written a sit com. Hit the jackpot on the first attempt! It’s a classic. RIP The Pride of Prestwich. Victoria, Queen of Comedy. Left the stage too soon but left us a legacy to laugh at!
Such an under-rated series, wonderful script, and a wonderful cast. Rest in peace Victoria, you were one of a kind and you leave a large Vic shaped hole in English comedy.
In my opinion the undisputed queen of observational comedy! Dinner ladies was one of the greatest shows she ever did! One i regularly whatch over and over again and it always cracks me up! Some of the funniest comedy lines i have ever seen.i remeber the infamous sscene where dolly thinks shes had viagra in her tea! The way that scene builds to its climax is sheer comedy genious! What a great writter victoria wood truely was.will we ever see a comedy geniuos like her again? RIP the true queen of comedy.
I love this so much as it reminds me of the places I've worked with a canteen. I have the DVD and have watched it a hundred times, and never tire of it. Great scripts, great actors, thoroughly enjoyable.
I watch this series every December, leading up to the millennium. It is part of my Christmas routine. It always feels like I'm 'going home'. Love it and I always look forward to each and every episode. I have to force myself not to watch two episodes on the same evening as I like to make the lovely warm feeling it gives me last over a couple of weeks. RIP the lovely Victoria.
Best series EVER. I think I know every line by now! How I wish she were still here. She's my literary hero. She was a force of Nature. What a loss for GB and for comedy worldwide. You were AWESOME, Ms. Wood. All my love and my blessings to you in the afterlife. You'll NEVER be forgotten. Xxx ❤😢❤
Victoria Wood outdid herself with Dinnerladies. Every character and casting choice was superbly written and brought to life. I have rewatched the entire series many many times and it's always fresh and wonderful to watch. It's a shame Victoria was taken so soon. A very talented woman and a British icon. May she rest in peace!
I have lots of Victoria's work. She was outstanding and I loved her to bits along with Peter Kay.I loved her with the camping , excercise, airport sketches. Love to all her family❤
Yes a brilliant series you can watch and watch and again a laugh all the time not many comedies are like this can put this up with fawlty towers john cleese and connie booths masterpiece
Some interesting comments about dinner ladies in the authorised biography of Victoria Wood, "Let's do it". The cast members talked about how incredibly difficult and nerve wracking it was because of Victoria Wood's obsessive perfectionism which could make her prickly - the rewrites are mentioned here in this video. Celia Imre also mentioned how she felt somewhat bullied by Victoria at times. Victoria's perfectionism also led her to talk dinner ladies down afterwards. She said that The Royle Family's new format had made studio based sitcoms like dinner ladies obsolete. Dawn French also being somewhat polite here. She mentioned how Victoria was very difficult to work with in that sketch. She also mentioned another time when Victoria came to stay with her in Cornwall and was a bit of a nightmare. She complained a lot and apparently sulked when Dawn took her for a walk on a beach, saying she didn't like beaches. Dawn pretty much lost her rag with her. All in all, the portrayal of Victoria Wood is a massive talent but someone who had very deep scars from the way her mother neglected her (maternal neglect being a theme that runs through a lot of Victoria's work). It made her shine, but also meant that at times she could also be very surly, controlling, jealous, obsessive, bullying and somewhat narcissistic.
@@georgielancaster1356the authorised biography "Let's Do It" is incredibly interesting. Her on stage persona was described as a creation she made with her husband. She often said she was baffled about why fans wanted to meet her and she's saying "Oh, they think I'm that woman off the Tele". Her Southbank shows with Melvyn Bragg were also problematic. They had to cut some footage where she was being quite rude about some fans who turned up at her show. She was also on record as saying she didn't want to play to 'audiences full of gay men". Bragg caught her out with one question asking her whether Pat & Margaret were actually just the two sides of her personality. She said yes, they were. One of the things that surprised me most is how she seems to have drifted away from Julie Walters and Celia Imre. Julie said she hadn't been to Victoria's house in years, and as I say, Celia said she often felt bullied by Victoria. Both Julie and Celia said they wouldn't tell Victoria anything personal as victoria would then use it in a sketch. Duncan Preston seems to have stayed in touch with Victoria and visited regularly, but he too seems to have had problems with victoria at times. Apparently victoria wanted Jim Broadbent to play the male lead in Pat & Margaret but he refused. Julie Walters had to intervene with Victoria to get her to consider Duncan. Victoria still made him do a screen test, which offended him greatly given that she knew his work well. He said that he always felt victoria had quite a low opinion of his acting skills.

When it was first broadcast in 1998 I was very disappointed in it. Victoria Wood was so clever with her tongue twisty type songs, 'Let's do it' for example, I was expecting something equally fast moving in her situation comedy, maybe I thought it would be equally as fast paced, a bit like 'Fawlty Towers'. How wrong was I? It was more of the pace of 'Last of the Summer Wine'. It was more of a clever word play type of thing which I did not truly appreciate and soon stopped watching it. Now as I approach 70, I am watching 'Dinner Ladies' on UK Gold and I think it is fantastic. Goes to show how your taste changes with the years.
I felt similarly about the first episode perhaps, as they were still establishing characters, but I persevered and ended up loving it and have watched it many many times in the last 20 years, learning to appreciate it more with each viewing. Some comedies mature wonderfully... and some comedies require the audience to mature wonderfully to truly appreciate their genius.
You can watch it again and again ,I choose to do so around Christmas .Lots of love RIP Victoria .
My fave sitcom of all time. Just so quotable, funny and sweet. RIP Victoria ♥️

It’s magnificent. 💛💛💛💛💛
Dinner Ladies - a masterpiece. The best script for consistant genius impact ever written. Every member of the cast has reams of top rate lines.

Absolutely brilliant series , Vic Wood was a sorely missed genius.

I honestly think... if we add up the injustices of life... as we tend to do... the loss of Victoria Wood is high on the list. God, she was magic....
Went to see the live version of the show brilliant too
Can I just say, Victoria Wood has never been underrated. Ever.
Thanks so much for posting! I love this show and it was great to hear from the fantastic actors who made it so amazing!!
The Pride of Prestwich gone too soon. RIP Victoria, Queen of Comedy.
i think Victoria Wood is and I quote Phillipa "bloody bloody bloody bloody frigging" brilliant
I don't know how she knew everyone i worked with. Genius.
How they kept a straight face with some of the most epic lines ever written is beyond me 😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
“Is it true about the syphilitic Delius myth?”

Victoria said Julie would pour the leftovers from lunch over her to make her costume look worse lol

And for a brief moment I forgot she had gone...
But both series of Dinnerladies are available in a DVD boxset.
Love this
So dinnerladies was The office before The Office?
This was actually on the TV at Christmas time. It maybe available to buy, I'm not sure.
It amazes me that that giant tin of beans is what a normal tin of beans costs now!! 😱😂
Do you have the full documentary?
I couldn't upload the full version originally as it got blocked... but I have managed to track it down. Did you want me to send it to you somehow?
