I traded with a friend who could not get what he wanted out of it. From the first time I tried the T5, I loved the sound and the responsiveness. I can't imagine giving it up.
Taking the time to thank you for sharing your experience. What you give is most valuable to any musician seeking to learn. Thank you,Thank you,Thank you! P.S. you got great chops
Thanks Ur helping me a great deal. Just got T7 large based on advice from you and I'm loving it.
Like your videos, easy to concentrate on, all the info I can take straight in (I have a concentration problem), and you are great at emphasising points. Finding out a lot about mouthpieces, never really knew how to look for a good one before. Got to make a big decision soon.
Great sound. Love the brass tacks approach to review and sound thank you! Liked and subscribed!
Great review! thx you looking forward to try one of these!
This was an eye-opener!
You make the best videos! I hope you and yours are holding okay during all this weirdness!! Your fast flow reminds me of Courtney pine
The T5 sounds nice and lush. T6 sounds nice and fat with some brightness and projection. Your ability to play so fast and consistent is incredible. Great review bro.
Thanks for ur tip on Selmer mpc saver's Much better then what I was using. no more problems.
Great review!!! Small chamber sounds great, focused and even in all register!
Background music is especially nice on this one.
You always sound great but man you sound AMAZING on that T5 large! I could listen to that all day.
This is a great review. When you shine the light down it I can see difference
Great video, thanks a lot! You sound good on both of them, hard to say which one I like better...
I like the aggressiveness of small chambers and it makes gives it a very powerful or as I like to say dangerous tone
great to see someone do a real review who isn't shilling for a company. I like the small chamber mouthpiece more
Back in the 1980s, I was studying sax and working in a machine shop at night. I brought in my Otto Link and used it as a model. I made one out of brass stock on a lathe and milling machine, and it came out pretty darn good. I made the chamber a bit bigger than the Link, and it projected nicely. Still have it sitting in my room, reminding me of those days.
I've been hearing a lot about them recently. I am looking to have something custom made this year.
@@Sirvalorsax I ordered mine last week, will see how they play. Love your videos! Keep them coming
Very clear good sounds from both MP. How do you evaluate Berg Larssen small MP like 100 opening with the sloped rail?
Love the Large Marge reference! 😂
I have buy a small chainber after watching this your posting video.
it sounds more focus and clearly than ottolink. it will be my favorite one. thank you for posting.
The big chamber soumds best. You have the speed and air to carry the seemingly slowness you perceive from the player side of the mpc. Thanks.
I like your idea of renaming the small chamber pieces. I automatically associate a thin laser beam sound with small chambers even though that's not always the case.
crazy good mate, thanks for your awesome knowledge, one piece of advice , watch the live rooms for hearing damage, tinnitus sucks.
Great reviews as always! I miss that super high reflection area in you older vids though...
I use a T7 Vandoren with a 2.25 Leger Sig reed, and find that great gutsy sound.. Think they are a fine mp, especially for the price. Taken me over 50 years to find this.
Hi, I'm thinking that it would be so great if you could post a video that would be your concept of a TYPICAL DAILY PRACTICE SESSION for our instrument and it's different phases including warmup...
I love your videos, tutorials, reviews and most of all your sense of humor !
T 5 seems to play/sound like a 5# Link from the eighties .Nothing wrong with that at all .
I love the large chamber!!!!
I have a Modern Vintage Otto Link vs Vandoren T5 "40's" comparison coming soon.
I have the medium V16 and I love it. But would wanna try these other options someday when the skill will be there. Thank you!
This confirms the science.
Hello my good sir. Its me again. Im still confused whether to get the v16 T6 medium chamber to replace my metalite m7. Btw, is it really worth it to upgrade from the metalite to the v16 considering the price of 250 usd for the v16 inclusive of an optimum lig. Thanks sir! I hope you would notice this. 😊
Hey man what song or transcription is that your playing at 5:57?
Hi Sir Valorsax, what low resistance mouthpiece would you recommend? I tried Ottolinks and Berg Larssen, but man the resistance on them! I have an ebonite Jupiter 4C now. I prefer the bright sound of the small mouthpiece in this vid. Thanks in advance!
In your experience, what setup that you’ve tried out allowed you to produce the deepest darkest sound?
Usually the stiffest reed with a mouthpiece that has thick side rails. You run the risk of it being SUPER HARD to play with all the resistance though. For my reviews, I've found that the Selmer Soloist and the Russeau JDX 5 are the darkest.
Damn, you make them all sound good
@@Sirvalorsax I agree. You sound good and everything you play sounds amazing. What is you choice Mouthpiece? You killed the $30 piece, the Sugal and the Vandorn. What do you play on? What do you recommend? Blessings.
Both sound really nice but I favor the T5. I like the darker, fuller tone. I think both are good to have for different situations, although to my ear both had plenty projection, I’m sure the T6 cuts through more when you need it to?
I'm still surprised by how different they are. Not just a chamber resizing.
Yeah, I like a spread sound as well, in certain situations. I like a focused sound in others. I have found that even with a mic there is a huge difference between a high baffle, small chamber mouthpiece and a low baffle large chamber piece, mainly the amplified focused sound Vs. the amplified softer spread. I always play in situations where I use a mic, but there is a point where I need that focused projection that allows me to cut through.
Great channel - I’m wondering how much the different chamber sizes affect intonation. ie if you change the volume of the part that is ?ideally supposed to exactly match what would be the volume of the cone if the cone continued to a theoretical point - surely this messes with the saxophones tuning??
Good point. I thought that one would just have a larger chamber than the other but one is skinnier and longer also. Also the baffle is a little different.
I have a question to ask:
Should I get a Jody Jazz Custom Dark HR or a Theo Wanne Durga V baritone mouthpiece given that what I care about most is chamber size?
Which Vandoren is easier to blow, the S+ or the medium chamber? Thanks
Love this channel. Great video man. You reselling that t5 large chamber?
whats the soundtrack in the first 4 minutes of the video ?
Cuál de las dos para Sax tenor gracias
You seem more at home on the T6. Perhaps it goes better with your horn ? Anyway great review, you sound great on both !
Incredible! Hi, I'm just starting back trying re-build an embouchure after 20 + years -- mind you, I'm originally a clarinetist. I want to purchase a new mouthpiece soon...rubber or metal. The Kohlert tenor I purchased a few years ago came with a stock, plastic mouthpiece. I LOVE a bright, brittle sound like yours, a Gato, the late Steve Grossman, as well as a Bob Berg. I guess my question is: should I opt for the hard-rubber (while re-building my embouchure), or go ahead and give a metal a shot? I do have an old Dukoff metal I purchase over 30 years ago (whom, actually greeted me, and sold me the mouthpiece himself, btw...), but, at the time, I had ABSOLUTELY no concern for the science of the mouthpiece-- basically, I didn't know what I was doing when purchasing it (and I was just making the transfer from clarinet to tenor). In fact, I can barely get a sound out of the Dukoff metal, til this day . Say, dude...LOVE your videos, most of all your playing! You have no idea how much you've inspired me to pull my ax back out. Respond at your convenience. Peace...
I would advise you to start with the Rico Metalite plastic mouthpieces. They are a cheap way to get back in the game while you are figuring out what you want. Modern mouthpiece manufacturing is INCREDIBLE nowadays and they can make any material mouthpiece sound bright or dark. The quality of the sound will differ with materials but if you are restarting, start inexpensively! I have quite a few vids on this piece:
ua-cam.com/video/JW2a2x5i2is/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/y7H4WFA7tZg/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/xgfCwPV8Mec/v-deo.html
ua-cam.com/video/e6zX70RQbdU/v-deo.html
Watch youtube vids on mouthpieces that you like where people are playing them in the style that you like to give you a better idea of what will work best. Modern mouthpieces can cost a fortune and vintage ones are even more expensive. Believe me when I say this, buying a really expensive piece that you don't like and can't return is a DRAG!!!!
@@Sirvalorsax Sir, thanks so much for the detailed and prompt response! Also, I can only imagine how busy your schedule is (all my late Mother's side were working musicians), so, your going out of the way -- and making the extra effort-- to reference and ad the links is duly noted and VERY much appreciated. I think I'm speaking for everyone here (or most) that you'd make one a helluva instructor -- should you go that route in your career one day -- if you're doing so now. Your analogies (and demonstrations -- esp the broom-stick and fulcrum analogy) was SO on point! There are a handful like you that are simply 'relatable' when learning this stuff on the internet! Thanks again. Peace :)
Can you tell me where the v16 t45 falls? Which is it closest to in brightness, lower register, and the "scream" in the upper register? (I don't know what to call the scream, but I like it on the smaller chamber much better.)
The small chamber is the more modern sounding one with the large chamber being a more vintage oriented piece. The small chamber favors the altissimo and the large chamber favors the low end
Great video, can you share which reeds you used when you changed to ones specific for each.
I still used Vandoren Redbox 2.5. I just picked better ones for each mouthpiece.
I enjoy all your videos. I saw your video on the Gary Sugal KWIII and the Berg Larsen. Which one do you think is the best out the three (Vandoren metal small chamber t-6, Sugal KW III or the Berg)?
The Berg is definitely the most balanced and neutral. The others are catered to a very specific type of sound
Thanks for the response. Which one would be a 2nd best option out of the Vandoren and Sugal?
I would never buy a Sugal. The guy is a crook. I heard Kirk Whalum split with him for that reason.
I was considering the v16 in a size t7 but will the small bore or big bore be more free blowing
Every mouthpiece will be the correct one for the venue. Therefore owning and using different mouthpieces
is a very good idea. Also recording situations can call for a change. Johnny Griffin told me that Jaws
recorded on a 5*Link but live use a 9 Link.
Interesting, I prefer smaller tip opening myself. Its hard to get around the acoustic limitations though
I have t 6 and t 7 small chamber I went to Sam ash and play tested the 6* Otto link and t 7 both metal They were some variations and differences between them but I like the T7 better
I liked more the small chamber...a good balance with the tenor sound...opens a little bit, give a little shine to the sound....it is a taste metter...anyway,the player makes all...nice chops Man:)
Do you repair your own horn, since on the ship you cannot really get on and off and get to a repair shop? I met you at the Horn Section Shop here in Melbourne, FL. Holler at me I got new horns and a set up guy here. I've slowed down my cruise work because of my new daughter.
Congrats on the baby girl!!! I'll be close enough to a repair shop soon but mostly It is wise to stock up on rubber bands and duck tape before I head out. LOL. I'll keep you in mind if I'm in the area
The small chamber one has a huge sound!!!!
Look, I understand this video was about the mouthpiece, but where were you filming? Like you're straight up ballin out here
Licks are just sick! OMG I sound like this in my dreams..... I guess I need to practice more lol
Great tubing! How's bout some Theo Wanne piece demos, would be cool!
I would love to but... I'm paying for all the products out of pocket so it gets super expensive. I'll see if I can score some used ones online in the future though.
You should review the new Dickerson Resonator Ligature on Reverb & ebay - it's a game changer
If the mouthpiece is longer, does that affect the tuning? For example, will a longer mouthpiece keep an older horn like a Conn in tune?
There is a relationship between mouthpiece length and chamber size that does affect intonation
Hey I got a question I'm no beginner but also no rookie and I'm currently playing with a beechler white diamond size 7
But I want a a metal mouthpiece I was thinking van doren t7
But my goal is to get one that's very easy blowing and easy to play... any suggestions...
On my V16 t6 i find I’m always super sharp and i was wondering if that has something to do with my how embouchure and when playing on a jazz mouthpiece i need to be more relaxed, but still don’t know. but even when i pull it out all the way i still am consistently sharp, any tips? Thanks!
I would work on adopting a new embouchure. I use a lip out embouchure which allows for much less pressure on the mouthpiece overall. This will eventually help you to develop more control because you are not wasting energy gripping the mouthpiece.
@@Sirvalorsax thanks man ill work on it! love the videos btw keep up the great work
Sirvalorsax i figured out that just the reeds i was using were not very good with this mouthpiece but moved to some vandoren 2.5d and it works great!
@@Sirvalorsax Thanks for pointing this out (the lip out embouchure).I was using an embouchure that was really more suitable for soprano sax, but on tenor. Upon reading this comment the other day, I tried the lip out method and found I had much more control, even with a tip opening that I had some struggles with before.
I would like the large chamber for ballads the small for bebop
@@MyRackley I would like the large chamber for ballands like ben webster but my main piece would still be a hard rubber link.. lol
What's the piano piece playing in the background of the beginning?
It's an original orchestral piece that I wrote. I haven't premiered it yet though
Is it all the wholes of the tenor saxophone are same😀??please tell me
They are the same for all saxophones. Some will have one extra note on the top or the bottom but still the same
More about your rig set up. Long tones please
Great review Adriene, I like how you sound on both of these pieces, they’re great generally, but like you I have a soft spot for that small chamber.
They sound very similar with a very subtle difference in the attack and EQ. The sound of the Large chamber sounds a little more resistant with a little more emphasis on lows. The T6 sounds more punchy.
I’d be interested to see you blow on a SYOS piece. Curious to know your take on them. I’d even be interested to see the colour combination you’d pick. :D
Good Luck and until next time, keep rocking.
D
I'm looking into one of the more custom oriented pieces. It might be a while before I can review one though
Yeah when I mentioned SYOS I meant custom, not artist. Don’t see much point going for it if you dont go custom, unless you really love an artist model or are squeezed for the extra $100 bucks it costs.
We all know it always comes out of your pocket when you review these pieces so take your time and we’ll be waiting (impatiently ;))
ProfessorSax, your commitment to music education is phenomenally surrealistic : knowledge, instructions, patience, pace of lessons, clarity, feedbacks, etc. - freely, and without your counting the costs.
The quality of your tone is marvelously polished, and exudes great passion, emotion and spirituality - irrespective of mouthpiece and/or other accessories.
Your overtones have that George Foreman KO pugnacity flavored with a Muhammad Ali-like smoothness as the altissimo notes "float like butterflies and sting like bees." (lol)
How or where can I purchase at least two of your Cds/Lps?
Thanks for the valuable and much-needed instructions - your massive sharing to the world.
5+* :: 5*
Thanks for the wonderful comments. I'm in a year-long process of moving now. I'm pursuing finishing the book and getting other things published some time before this year is up
Does chamber size affect how hard or soft I blow , or does chamber size more affect my sound, ive played 7 star , 8 . Thinking of jumping to a 9
Yes! But inherent design matters most. I have very low tip opening classical mouthpieces that are very resistant
Is there any specific mouthpiece for a classical player wanting to approach a jazz setting, I know the answer is prolly just any good jazz mouthpiece and practice on it but want to ask anyway
The Vandoren T35 is an interesting hybrid. I would always recommend a regular Otto Link (super tone master) or a Vandoren V16. They are super affordable and lots of people play on them. Also the Rico Metalite are a nice cheap way in. Thanks for watching.
What reeds are you playing here? Strength? Do you work on them? Thanks!!
Vandoren Redbox 2.5. I do work on my reeds but I generally don't have to do a whole lot to get them to play well.
I like large chambers sound - always have - but isnt it also about intonation - large chambers go with large bores (conn, martin) etc. Crazy crib btw
Nice review,i am very beginner, and i just purchased V16 T6 Large Chamber Ebonite and is very hard to play, seems like I can’t control the sound unless I blow hard,,,
The ZZs run a bit stiff in my opinion. I would recommend Greenbox #2 or Redbox #2 for beginners if Vandoren is your preference. I use La Voz mediums on my soprano because they are softer overall
Sirvalorsax You’re absolutely right ,coz i got this chinese reeds, and they are perfect
Liked that snipet from Mozart at 7:50
Physics question: why would the large chamber mouthpiece also be shorter? I'd think with a larger chamber you'd push in more, so you'd want the piece to be longer to compensate. Do you notice any difference in the intonation tendencies of the two mouthpieces?
Good question. I think they were going for a 1940's style with the large chamber. Perhaps the mouthpiece they modeled it after was shorter
Do you get a fuller sound on a large chamber or small chamber ?
It depends on how you approach playing them. I'm always thinking of forward projection when I play small chamber mouthpieces and proximity projection when playing large chamber mouthpieces. If I reverse that, my sound won't be full on either mouthpiece.
"I am not a paid endorsee." But are you a paid endorser? :)
I really like your sound and I'm enjoying your channel. I'm picking up my sax again after a very long time and I will never be as good as you, but maybe I'll be good enough again someday to not be embarrassed to play.
It seems like you should be paid for reviewing these products. You have some of the BEST mouthpiece reviews on UA-cam with great explanations & reasonings behind your work.
Your demonstrations in performance are the BEST I've heard on UA-cam and I'm pretty sure that you've influenced some people to go out & purchase these products.
These are great tutorials on saxophone mouthpieces, which makes one (or should) want to study more about mouthpieces.
Thanks for the info & the love & care you put into each & every one of your presentations.

HEY BRO HAVE YOU TRYED YET THE DRAKE SON OF SLANT 7 STAR TENOR MOUTH PIECE??? I HOPE CAN MAKE A VIDEO OF THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT TRYED AND IF YOU HAVE PLEASE LET ME KNOW WAS IT THANKS FOR YOUR HELP MAN ALL THE BEST DENNIS
I was looking into one of the Drake pieces for a more contemporary smooth jazz type of sound but I couldn't specify the one that I was looking for. There is a shop in Ohio that I'll visit next time I'm there that carries them so I'll be able to narrow that search. Thanks
This demo proves one thing. You sound great no matter what. The choice is only about what makes it more enjoyable, and comfortable to accomplish what you are playing.
