The reason for multilayer packaging is its longer product shelf life, oxygen barrier properties and water vapour transmission rate. Multilayer often uses PE, HDPE in the outer layer and may use a thin layer of better barrier materials such as aluminium, ethyl vinyl alcohol, etc (EVA) and some adhesive to bind them. In food packaging, milk cartons these materials usage may be lesser than in a plastic bottle that stores chemicals like fertilizer, oils etc. Moving to mono-materials especially bio-degradable ones can be a little tricky especially with trade off in shelf life and degradability of materials and regarding food, the leaching of plastics and impurities with the plastics into the food. Nevertheless, the pursuit in the substitution of these materials is our key focus.
