- From Hamlet to Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, the Academy Award for Best Costume Design has welcomed 90 films, 60 of which have been period/historical, 8 fantasy and 20 contemporary. The job of a costume designer, to seamlessly dress the characters based on their personality and experience is understated, and sometimes, misunderstood work. Why look past the Oscar in their field to pay tribute to some of these designs. I wanted to pace these clips, just so you can get a detailed impression of the work, it might be a bit overlong, but it's the only vid I can find on here that incorporates the B&W Oscars. Maybe it could be a good tool for the right people too.
Music from Laurent Dury's 'Cinematic Elegance.' The songs are, in order: "The Great and the Good," "Ripples in Time," "Moonlight Tryst," "The Dancer in the Keyhole" and "By Night."

Sandy Powell was right (I don’t know why I remember her saying this but I do) … designers of contemporary costume really have a disadvantage when it comes to competition even though they work just as hard. Respect to them.

Just ran across this video. I was surprised by how many films that won in the 50's and 60's starred either Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor. Also I was surprised to see Lawrence of Arabia did not win in 1962, although I'm sure it was nominated.
Amazing how in 1965 Julie Christie starred in both Darling and Dr. Zhivago.
