I took my 15 degree flex down to 10 degrees and was completely comfortable. If I am going any colder I just stack my sleep systems. I have a thermorest liner I put inside my quilt or if I am going well below zero Fahrenheit I'll place my summer bag inside of it. Great Quilt and nice video
good review. i have a 35° quilt thats perfect for summer in yhe sierra Nevada but needed a shoulder quilt. it was a toss up between this or the western mountaineering astrallite quilt. i have a wm alpinlite that i love so i know it is top quality and in the end i was able to use a discount and get the western mountaineering for $50 cheaper than the katabatic.
I own a katabatic quilt and absolutely love it...true temp ratings...other then it gets a lil drafty...definitely go with a traditional mummy bag in sub zero conditions
Can you explain what measurements you are talking about when you say that the Flex has a 43" footbox and the Alsek has a 25" foot box. Are both of those numbers circumferences when closed? That's seems like a massive difference when they look to be quite similar. I'm curious if maybe those are incomparable dimensions. Any chance you can check the footbox linear width for both bags?
Hey there! Great question. So, with the flex, that 43 inch measurement is referring to the quilt being unzipped and opened up. So 43 inches in width. On the Elite lineup, the 25 inch measurement is referring to the girth, so yeah, that is a little confusing. I should have mentioned that in the video. Sorry! Like you said though, they are pretty similar when the Flex is zipped up and the foot box closed. I didn't notice much of a difference in that scenario. The Flex is just a bit more roomy though I thought. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! I'd probably recommend going with a 6' version. You don't want to compress the down in the foot box because the quilt is too short for you. Thanks for watching!
if you had to buy only and you're on a budget, will you go with a sleeping bag or a quilt? I'm considering going with a OV quilt Vs UGQ or a sleeping bag. Thanks in advance
Hey there Jose! That would depend on what I was doing. If going out and temps aren't going to be below 15 or so, I'd go with a quilt personally. I usually move to a mummy bag if I know temps are potentially going to be below that. Some people hate quilts though, so really comes down to personal preference. I love a good quilt though and stick with that until temps drop. Thanks for watching!
@@BackwoodsPursuit thanks for answering. I want to invest on a "do it all, all seasons" type of bag or quilt. For sleeping bag, which one will you recommend?
@@piche090391 gotcha. Personally I'd be good with the Katabatic 15 degree quilt. That's a comfort rating, and I've had it lower than that comfortably. That said, when I'm out with my SO stove, I don't keep it going all night because I wouldn't get any sleep lol. I'll take a 0 degree or warmer bag if it's gonna way down into the single digits or less, even with the stove. If you go with a bag, the Feathered Friends are awesome bags, and the Sea to Summit Alpine are awesome bags as well. Here are our reviews on those if interested! backwoodspursuit.com/category/gear-reviews/sleeping-bags/
I have the 15 degree flex quilt and I am very impressed in both it's warmth and versatility. I use it in Autumn, Spring and Winter.
Excellent! That's a fantastic quilt for sure! Thanks for watching!

Thanks man! Yeah, I definitely love the Flex Quilt! Both are awesome though!
Update - the Flex now has the "mitten clips" that the elite has on the side that narrow the width and create side collars.
@CombatBanana thanks for the info! I hadn't heard about that update, but love these quilts! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the insight! Yeah, WM is fantastic as well! Thanks for watching.
Great review, thanks for your insight. Greatly appreciated.

They are fantastic quilts! I'm the same as you...once temps drop below the mid teens, I like to move to a good mummy bag. Thanks for watching!
You could do that or layer what you have. If I am going sub zero I'll use my 15 degree Flex and add my summer sleeping bag inside of it.

Great review. I’m 5’7 and roll a lot in my sleep. Would 5’6 wide be best for me? Or do I also need to go longer to 6’?

@@piche090391 you bet! What's the lowest temps you expect you'd be out in?
@@BackwoodsPursuit I would say 15 degrees, anything lower than that I'd just bring my SO stove.
