- A look at connecting your windows CE device or PDA to Windows 10 for file transfer and PIM synchronisation. Who says 20+ year old devices are obsolete?
Web page link - www.junipersys...
Need .net 3.5 installed - www.microsoft....
Outlook (often found on OEM disc packaged with device) last compatible version is 2013 32bit
Thank you for this tutorial. I successfully connected my Jornada to Windows 10.
Excellent! It'll sync with outlook 32bit 2013 or earlier 😃
Looks like im now getting into windows CE now! Also subbed!
Welcome to the channel! Windows CE can do a lot more than most people think despite its feeble hardware specs
Thanks, This helped with an old barcode scanner that ran Windows CE, on another note, your hair looks like Doc brown's hair from BTTF, but not grey.
Glad I could help and thanks... I think lol
From what we know... that Windows CE computer had the entire OS and even the built in applications(and there for even the graphics and probably that HTML file that pops up if you open internet explorer) are stored in ROM, so this means when your computer DOES read that Windows CE computer, it probably cannot write it no different from a CD. So not sure how would you be able to file transfer anything to Windows CE like this instead of you know... just use a certain flash memory card so that Windows CE could open that when you connect it to Windows CE as the entire Windows CE thingy and applications are stored on ROM?
So you are quite correct all the applications, sample files etc are stored in ROM (as you say like an unwritable CD), the RAM is used to both run programs AND store any created documents/PIM data/files etc so this one has 32MB RAM and you might give 16MB to run programs and the other 16MB for storing files 😃
Nice work!
I perfekte a good old Thinkpad t60 (ssd upgrade) with xp, activ sync 4.1 for the older version PDAs like the Jornada 420 …. systems and office 2000. :)) works perfectly well.
Glad you liked it, sadly there's no way for it to work on Win11 yet...
I thought activsync 4.1 didn't work with CE3... I will have to give that a go! As you have probably seen from my videos I have a Lifebook P1610 running XP which I use to sync a lot of the PDA's just works better!
@@HandheldComputing Uhhh, Win11 is already released.
@@ezzeldingamingcoding It sure is and last time I looked won't connect with WinCE devices...
Windows CE palmtops are STILL great as dedicated word processing devices. No distractions! Just get work done!
Yes that are, I use my J720 for exactly that... although sometimes I just play games on it 😅
i wonder if the tiny windows 10 thingy can play minecraft, probably not, but even then, the tiny thing still seems useful for other stuff, i do swear to heck that the little thing is about the size of an ssd
Now that is a good question! Its younger brother the GPD Pocket 3 most certainly can but its possible the Atom CPU might struggle a little on this one... Maybe I should give it a go and post an answer...
Hello, are you maybe familiar with "slattach" available in *nix systems and had luck establishing SLIP/CSLIP connection with Windows CE? I'd like to establish internet connection to my Windows CE (NEC MobilePro 800). Thanks in advance, and great video btw!
Your best bet for internet on a CE2 is a wifi PC-card. Not many are compatible check the hardware compatibility on HPCfactor.com before you buy (they also have drivers if needed)
After that you can get online in a limited fashion with IE, for better browsing I would suggest trying to find remote desktop software - I fear you need CE2.11 for that though.
@@HandheldComputing yeah, I tried locating my Orinoco Gold for PCMCIA, but seems to be lost in action. I will only use terminal services tho (ssh/telnet). I will surely let you know if I manage to succesfully establish SLIP connection. Thanks!
@@HandheldComputing Done :D used pppd daemon on Linux ale Dial-Up connection on NEC. After some tinkering with nat/masquerade with ipfw and all working. Thanks for responding tho!
@@B_S123 genius, use the dial up connection! I never thought of that!
Can you help me troubleshoot? I have everything working except for Outlook synchronization. When I go into my settings it says Outlook not yet configured. I can transfer files and synchronize to my PC just now with Outlook to my mobile device. Any clues on what's going on here?
Have you opened outlook? you don't need to set up email but you need to run it to create the initial save file. Also make sure you are using 32bit and 2013 or earlier, sadly it won't sync with later versions. If you need an earlier version of outlook there should be one with the CDs that came with the device - or look on the internet archive 😉
@@HandheldComputing I had Outlook 2013 set up. It only worked after I deleted it and redownloaded older versions of outlook. Basically it synced with 2003 without issue from there I upgraded to 2013. I can receive emails, sadly I can't send any though. Thanks for the tutorial!
I found this video when searching for how to link my win10 PC to either my Ubisurfer (view only) OR touchscreen SATNAV tablet both of which seem to use WIN CE6.x I wondered if I can use either screen as Extra Monitors to display Flight Sim information. I don't see any OS as truly obsolete as long as it can perform a useful function, plus the tech i use tends to be v. portable & "dinky" hence cool..
You should be able to connect your satnav via those instructions and if your ubisurfer is the later CE version (the early ones were Linux) that too. Side window allows use of the CE screen as a second monitor via a cable connection. It stopped working in Win10 back in 2018 and I've not tried it since. I agree, none of these things are obsolete its just that people always want newer, often not even better!
Just tried it now and even in admin and compatibility mode it wont complete the install at the PC side. It will work on Win7 though
There is a bit of software called SOTIPocket Controller I've never used it but it allows screen recording of a PPC, not sure if it offers screen extension or mirroring
@@HandheldComputing Thanks for replying. It seemed like a good idea to try to use things like old tech/Android phones as monitors as they use USB power & can be set into a rig with bezels to conceal their structure leaving only the screen itself as a multi-input flight sim guage; It's so cheap to grab old smartphone phones, this might be a v. cheap & easy way to assemble a cockpit of touchscreen monitors costing a LOT < than £129ea.
@@HandheldComputing YOU are a mine of useful info : ) Thanks again!
I didn't even know Windows 10 could run on something that small.
Its quite an amazing little machine from GPD - this is gen 1 and they are now on gen 3
Here's the review for it - ua-cam.com/video/LuC1ndh7DWI/v-deo.html
im not winning at this.. i have a 680e here with no touch, and a 720 with touch and no keyboard... i have both types of docks but only have a cable for the 720 usb style one.. win10 does not seem to react to either. i have downloaded framework 3.5 and the junipers patch.. im waiting on updates. But still no USB reaction from either of my jornadas.. im starting to wonder if my cradle is dodgy..
So could be a bad cable/dock. Try plugging the dock in, soft reset the J720, switch it on and put it into the dock. Sometimes this works.
2nd the keyboard on the 680 is the same as the 720 so you could make a fully functional 720...
I cannot see an update for windows mobile devices in my history. Ive waited a few weeks now... hmmm..
@@gillesstoops5049 the update will be under "optional updates" in the windows update screen. But if the PC isn't 'seeing' the dock/PDA it won't try to install it, if you have another PPC or HPC that might lure Win10 into adding WMDC
I dusted off an old xp laptop this week, got wifi going, got win mobile centre on there, the version for xp on a grey screen, not green screen. Still cannot find the dock amongst the usb devices :( it does accept ir blasting, and i do have a win7 laptop i got running as well with an ir blaster... im getting desperate! Haha. I guess its the journey, not the destination that ultimately matters.
Thank you so much for your time and help.. i will let you know when i succeed haha.. i tackle this project a few hours on sunday night. So maybe next weekend will be the winner. But the only new resolution i have today is, my usb dock does not work, and i dont have the serial for my other dock.. i will pull it apart and investingate. Ah what a good time this is! Hahahaha. (It actually kind of is) :)
@@gillesstoops5049 My pleasure. I hope you manage to get it working! Let me know how you get on :-)
I could NOT for the life of me get my 680e Jornada connected to a 7, 8 or 10 machine. I luckily had a junk XP laptop and a serial to USB adaptor and im using Active Sync 3.8. If you want to save yourself the frustration, just order a cheap XP laptop and you wont have any issues connecting your PDA/Palmtop to a computer.
Its likely that its an issue with the drivers for your serial to USB adaptor - I have a few and they won't all work on 10
Ahhh thats may be the issue for sure. @@HandheldComputing
Exactly what I did... Panasonic Tough Book CF-19 with XP works like a charm!!
Qual a especificação do equipamento para funcionar o ce?
O Windows CE requer apenas especificações baixas dependendo da versão, o Jornada 720 só tem uma CPU ARM de 200Mhz e 32mb de RAM e executa CE3.0
Did you call that gpd device pocket 7?
Yes its the pocket 7 by GPD - they are now on the 3rd version of it and do a few other small format computers
www.gpd.hk/product
You saved me a lot
Happy to help!
"gpd pocket 7"???? Oh, you mean the "GPD Pocket" that happens to have a 7" screen? Because just so you know, there's actually a GPD Pocket 2 and 3. Lol.
It is the "GPD pocket 7" to differentiate it from the GPD win and it's 8" screen, then they made a new one and named it the "GPD Pocket 2" confusing I know!
And games? 😁
There are lots of games for CE as well as emulators try www.hpcfactor.com or for pocket PCs check out www.mobyware.org there are some dead links though...
