They’re both great razors. I started out with a 34c to get my feet wet, then upgraded to a 6s a few months later, which I love just as much. No matter which razor one chooses, I highly recommend buying a variety pack of blades to find what works best, especially for a beginner. Hi Dave. Great video as always. One tip on shaving the jawline I picked up from another shaver is to open your mouth all the way while you're shaving your cheeks. It drops the jaw bone lower and you can shave the ridgeline while it's vertical and flat. Then when you close your mouth, the underjaw area is already shaved a bit. Makes it easier (for me, anyway) to get closer on that usually-troublesome area. Cheers.
Thanks for the videos and renewing my interest in DE shaving. Much happier with my 6s than the merkur futur I've hated for many many years. Now ive got a bunch of new brushes, some Stirling soap, a leaf (for my head) and have fallen in love with Permasharp blades.
I always recommend the 6C as a first razor to new wet shavers due to the versatility in options because of the plates. You're basically getting 6 razors in one package for one price. Upgrading to the 6S later is a good idea, too, as that razor is heavier and more robust.
Hey OS I got my Persona Blades today and Brother I have to say that they're awesome. They have more Blade Feel then I'm used to but they're more sharp then my usual Blades. I shaved with them today and I love them they'll be in my Blade Bag for as long as I continue to shave.
I own both of these razors and I really like both of them. I would recommend that men give the Merkur 37C Slant a try. I shaved with one this morning and used a Tabac shave stick. The results were fantastic. BTW. I used an Omega EVO brush but a Simpson Trafalga T3 works as well.
@@OhioShaves I find that I get a very close shave and a very comfortable one. The optimum angle is almost automatic, and there is no irritation or nicking. It’s quick and easy. I hear guys talk about a learning curve with certain razors and I don’t understand how that works. I guess it’s because I’m 77 years old and have been shaving since I was 16. I do enjoy these videos and thank you for educating those getting started.
Today, I had a sweet one pass shave with Proraso White, A Rockwell on the 2 Plate, and a Feather Blade. I usually use the 3 Plate on my face and jawline, and switch to the 2 Plate on my neck. I get razor burn on my neck, just looking at a Razor. I loaded a new blade and grabbed the 2 Plate, thinking it was the 3. Anyway it was 24 hours of stubble removed in one pass, so I was fairly pleased about it. ... and I'm normally a two pass shaver. My preshave was some Thayer's unscented. On me, Thayer's makes the stubble stand up and the razor has less work to do. Post shave it was some Thayer's before a dose of unscented Nivea.
Would love to get the rockwell eventually. Hated every shave I ever performed until I bought the 34c with some Astra SPs. Never nicked, smooth skin in 2-3 passes every time. And so much cheaper than all those shit 5 blades that would tear my neck and mustache skin to pieces!

My vote is for the 6C. The 34C is often touted as a good beginner's razor, but it is always going to be what it already is, regarding blade exposure, feel, aggressiveness, etc. The 6C is variable.
I think the Rockwell is the best razor for the money. It has enough weight. You have different plates for different hair types not too many complaints with Rockwell Razors.
I agree that the Rockwell 6C is the best/safest DE for a new wet shaver. It's like 6 razors in one. And it's almost impossible to get a nick. You might be interested in watching "Kevy Shaves" latest video. He did a shave using the 6S with the R1 plate to prove that blade gap can be irrelevant. He had 5 days of growth, did a 3-pass shave, and got a BBS result.
Dave! Hello from Idaho! Great tip on how to shave the jaw-line. I’ve struggled finding a successful technique that doesn’t require several passes. Thanks for the advice! I cannot wait to get my T2 SS; at which time I’ll purchase some Rockwell shaving products. So far, the products I use and like are Thayer’s, Supply Razor’s shaving creams and aftershaves, and Proraso’s shaving cream (really good). Another great video! I used to have the Merkur 34hd in both chrome & in gold, but sold them on eBay. Kinda wish I hadn’t done that to be honest. Great video, but not a fair battle for the Merkur 34C. Rockwell 6 C is an ajustable razor while Merkur 34 C is not. I would prefer you made a video between Merkur Progress and the Rockwell 6C on the agressive side on both razors. That would be a fair fight. And we could see witch one is more efficient on that two pass shave. I understand your preference on Rockwell razors. Everyone have their preferences and that is ok. But there are many quality razors out there, if you know what i mean. Besides that, you had a nice shave. And that is what it matters the most in the end. Keep up the good work and take care.
Funnily enough, these 2 razors are the only 2 razors i sold from my 10+ razor collection. Its not because i disliked it though. Its the opposite, i liked 6C so i bought 6S, which is still one of my favorite razors.
Have you ever tried the Merkur Progress? I was tempted to go with the 34C when I started but went for the merkur progress instead. I’d be interested to see what you think of it as an adjustable razor. I use it with Proraso green !

Thinking through the results here: Merkur 34C not adjustable against Rockwell 6C on plate R6 (most aggressive), used a two-pass shave, similar shave results both sides, about similar non-irritation both sides. Does this mean that 34C is not really mild, or does this mean the R6 plate of Rockwell is although "aggressive", is not too aggressive? I am really interested in understanding the impressions more on what you believe based on this comparison shave. I really wish I'd love DE razors more but I just can't get by without any irritation even with doing only 1 pass. Tried multiple dozens of both blades and safety razors and I just can't get consistent results. What I find works best for me is artist club blades and basically any ac razor. I preffer the kai pinks and I can do 3 full passes really fast with 0 irritation - my guess would be because the AC blades are that much stiffer so there's no blade chatter (or maybe it's just in my head). That being said I'd love to see more videos of you using SE artist club razors. Maybe you'd enjoy going down the artist club rabbit hole :) Cheers!
@@Mr_ZB18 I've used the Hawk V2, Yaqi Excalibur, Yaqi Romulus, Feather Artist Club SS both the normal folding one and the kamisori version, Shieldrazors AC, and a 3d printed AC razor from Roger Quintero which can be found on thingiverse or printables. I prefer light razors so I like the Shieldrazors one the most. The total weight of it is 24g and it has really nice knurling on the handle and the low profile head is really a treat. I was a bit worried at first since it has a 1.15 gap and positive exposure but it really isn't agressive, it's really smooth and efficient. I don't mind the Romulus either, it's really mild too but since it's stainless steel it's a bit too heavy for my taste. The Hawk V2 is more on the agressive side but the head is a bit bigger and I generally dislike using both the Feathers because they're a bit too agressive for me and I can't go as fast with them as I can with the other razors. If you haven't tried any I'd just buy a cheaper if I were you. The Excalibur is the cheapest but you have to fiddle with the top cap a bit to align it perfectly straight. The second cheapest would be either the Hawk V2 or the Shieldrazors AC which you can only order from China (I'd go for the Shieldrazor over the Hawk V2 anyday). If you want a heavier razor you could get either the Romulus or Remus also from China. If you don't mind spending a ton of money you can go for the Blackland Vector (don't own this one sadly). Sorry for the wall of text, hope it helps you finding your first AC razor.

I cant get a close shave with the Merkur34c and I don't care for the short handle. I gave it to a friend. I have a Rockwell 6S polished (Razor Emporium custom) and its an excellent razor with options. I did find that the sharper blades like a Personna or Accuforge did a better job in the Merkur 34c then the Astra. I love the Astra blades in a couple of my more aggressive razors, but could not use in a Merkur. I have more fine hair compared to Mr. Ohio. Everyone should own a Rockwell. I have 5 razors now, with some high end pups, and I still rotate in my Rockwell.

The Merkur razor looks pretty good......but it seems kind of boring and uninteresting unlike the rockwell, I used a King C Gillette Razor and got a great shave out of it. And, I prefer a larger handle on my razor too.
I would definitely pump up the plate just because you're using a higher number plate. Doesn't mean you're going to cut yourself. If you're getting Nick cut, I would definitely suggest going up to a higher plate.
The mildest razor isn’t always the smoothest shave. My mildest razor rips my face up. With the 6c you need to find your best plate for your skin and blade combination.

It is a medium aggressive, blade. Comfort coats are so smooth in my face. They are my go to razor blades.

Haven't had much luck with them. But I do try them all.

@@Mr_ZB18 I've used the Hawk V2, Yaqi Excalibur, Yaqi Romulus, Feather Artist Club SS both the normal folding one and the kamisori version, Shieldrazors AC, and a 3d printed AC razor from Roger Quintero which can be found on thingiverse or printables. I prefer light razors so I like the Shieldrazors one the most. The total weight of it is 24g and it has really nice knurling on the handle and the low profile head is really a treat. I was a bit worried at first since it has a 1.15 gap and positive exposure but it really isn't agressive, it's really smooth and efficient. I don't mind the Romulus either, it's really mild too but since it's stainless steel it's a bit too heavy for my taste. The Hawk V2 is more on the agressive side but the head is a bit bigger and I generally dislike using both the Feathers because they're a bit too agressive for me and I can't go as fast with them as I can with the other razors. If you haven't tried any I'd just buy a cheaper if I were you. The Excalibur is the cheapest but you have to fiddle with the top cap a bit to align it perfectly straight. The second cheapest would be either the Hawk V2 or the Shieldrazors AC which you can only order from China (I'd go for the Shieldrazor over the Hawk V2 anyday). If you want a heavier razor you could get either the Romulus or Remus also from China. If you don't mind spending a ton of money you can go for the Blackland Vector (don't own this one sadly). I have both and think Rockwell is better quality and with the plate #4 have closers shave

I cant get a close shave with the Merkur34c and I don't care for the short handle. I gave it to a friend. I have a Rockwell 6S polished (Razor Emporium custom) and its an excellent razor with options. I did find that the sharper blades like a Personna or Accuforge did a better job in the Merkur 34c then the Astra. I love the Astra blades in a couple of my more aggressive razors, but could not use in a Merkur. I have more fine hair compared to Mr. Ohio. Everyone should own a Rockwell. I have 5 razors now, with some high end pups, and I still rotate in my Rockwell.

I change plates sometimes just for kicks and I think it only takes a few seconds. Some would have you believe otherwise.
My choice is the Christopher Bradley Razor with a B plate.

The Merkur razor looks pretty good......but it seems kind of boring and uninteresting unlike the rockwell, I used a King C Gillette Razor and got a great shave out of it. And, I prefer a larger handle on my razor too.

Rockwell 6C didnt wrok for me a lot of cuts and nicks even at low profile 3 and below
I would definitely pump up the plate just because you're using a higher number plate. Doesn't mean you're going to cut yourself. If you're getting Nick cut, I would definitely suggest going up to a higher plate.
The mildest razor isn’t always the smoothest shave. My mildest razor rips my face up. With the 6c you need to find your best plate for your skin and blade combination.
