it's cool that despite how early this was in GBV history, Bob and Tobin were like 36 and 38 respectively. never too old to start!!!!!!
I wouldn't say this is early. They had probably been a band for 10 years at this point.
I wish people would see the idiocy in ageism. An artist develops as he/she ages.
@@MrKidBusy helps that bob essentially released his first real album a7 28 with forever since breakfast
@@MrKidBusy this particular lineup was fairly new as a group. Dan Toohey on bass was new, Tobin Sprout had been away in Florida for a few years and Kevin Fennell the drummer had been fired by Pollard more than once, but Bob was in a situation where he needed a drummer and didn’t know anyone else
I can't imagine being at this show without knowing them and hearing all these songs being banged out. God Bless GBV. Inexplicably and forever my fave.
yeah and you would have been able to buy one of their crappy records with the hand made cover for ten bucks.......
Queen of Cans and Jars is def one of the best songs ever. The chords in the chorus are just nuts.
Postal Blowfish!!! So damned good...this whole show was great! Thank you so much for uploading this footage!!!
It was VERY hot and humid that night! Not very many people at Khyber that evening
You are a wonderful human for posting this
This is gold
This is an absolute treasure! Thanks for posting it!!!!
- bald Mitch Mitchell doesn't exist
meanwhile bald Mitch Mitchell:
Wow, what a document!!
Incredible set
Wow, just awesome to see/hear...
Incredible footage!
Wow they were "young " !
Holy crap, somebody upload the Strapping Fieldhands, Mike Rep & the Quotas, and V-3 sets!
this is Bob blackout drunk after the CBGB's show. as he described it later, he started drinking at 11am and couldn't open one of his eyes by showtime
somehow Toby with a Strat is weirder
This is amazing.
reading "closer you are" right now. they mention this show
@@PintsofGuinness yes I think it made the critical praise for "do the Collapse" seem more universal than it really was though.
Fuck yeah
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
12:59 queen of cans and jars
God damn…..
On the tundra !!
Thanks for sharing this incredible video. Who is the guest doing the backing vocals on Non-Absorbing ? and who is the guest doing vocals on Exit Flagger ?
Jimmy Pollard, Bob's brother on "Non-Absorbing", the other I'm not sure
Tobin playing a Strat??
GBV! GBV! GBV! Always and forever, soooooooooo cherry! 🍒 🤟🤟🤟
who's the bass player?
I didn't know that he played a fretless bass until I read "Closer You Are". (the story of Robert Pollard and Guided By Voices) I think the evidence was there all along though. Now that I know it's there I think I can hear the evidence in a few songs songs, those that end with the bass kinda floating around, way up the neck as it fades out. Some of the notes are not quite in tune, but within the context they are exactly as they should be. That's a small part of the special magic, exclusive to GBV!!!
What is that guitar Toby’s playing and why does it look like it has.a bass headstock? So confused by this show, the only people recognizable are Pollard and Fennell
@@slacktoryrecords4193 What guitar is Toby playing? Well, it's a Fender Stratocaster, my friend. And I think Toby is super recognizable here, an so is Mitch Mitchell, in spite of the shaved head.
I just opened my last beer for the night then this pioped up.
