Ten minutes ago I was watching UA-cam videos because I was was not motivated to do my physics homework. Now, I want to do my physics homework. Thank you, Hank and Joe.
Came into this expecting to watch a minute or so and have it go way over my head. Ended up staying for 10 minutes because I kept rewinding to understand better, so awesome that you got to talk to this guy this makes me really excited for the future
Hank, thank you so so much for doing this video right when I'm becoming super interested in all this stuff! I love it when I can come home from a day of school and then watch one of your videos and learn 10 times more from it than I did during the rest of my day! dftba
He was really good at explaining that to people who don't have much idea. The dark matter/energy stuff was incredible! Thanks heaps for doing this Hank :D
This is going to take multiple viewings to appreciate. It's funny, as a Psyc major the first thing I noticed was the changes in posture through out the video.
Thanks to Chemistry I and the physics class I'm in, plus Hank's quark song I'm proud to say I understood a fair amount of that :) some of it I just had no clue about though... Thanks for this, DFTBA :)
fascinating! I LOVED the stuff about Dark Matter. Also when he said 'What's keeping you from falling to the middle of the earth" and you said...um.. My Chair?
@Ameliasadventure I should clarify- I'm only a second year! I found it interesting that for the most part Hank's posture didn't change that much- he was sitting up and slightly forward in his chair but he mirrored joe when joe shifted so did hank; however after a bit joe sat back in his chair, his posture relaxed and he seemed more comfortable. What I got out of this is that although Hank has the base knowledge to keep up in the convo. he deferred completely to joe's superior knowledge and
experience, that didn't really change at any point. What I got from joe was that he maybe wasn't expecting the sort of knowledge and questions that hank had because as he went along and realized he didn't have to stop and explain every other word he relaxed and really got into material he loves. Just my take :)
Hank, just so you know, I know an extremely small amount about particle or quantum physics but I watched the whole video just because it's on hankschannel and I know I might learn something
@leaguesmanoframsgate Even though the increase wasn't that large, the error was even smaller. The speed of light itself was about 6 sigma (i.e. 6 error bars) away from the measured value. The chance of the neutrinos to travel with the speed of light or slower is about 1/506,797,346 with the given data.
I enjoy that the view count right now is at 14,356. I'm glad I live in a world that that many people would take 10 minutes to broaden their understanding of the world a little bit.
@peterjjune I see your point and agree with it in general, but really it's rather different in this context. Einstein's theory had huge volumes of theoretical maths behind it. These guys have a a really rather small increase that's well within the error bars, as it were, of the measuring equipment. It's nice to see more big physics and I hope that it ISN'T just a measuring error, but it's highly unlikely to be anything else.
@rinaellarinaella Good point, well made. Yet another reason why the Internet is better than TV - if this had been on any news program then it would have been max. two minutes long with the most condescending questions you could imagine.
@NixLaser This is not okay with me. We need some chemistry nerds to remedy this problem. If I was to write an entry it would say "Joe Incandella discovered the top quark. Hank Green interviewed him once." Clearly it wouldn't be very good. lol
@nimbleline Haha, he's just a philosopher. Why would you have some strong dislike for a dead guy? A lot of his ideas were really left field, sure, but he was fundamental in the process of building Western philosophy. I can at least appreciate him from that perspective :)
@NethDugan i see your point but no, as you said both matters dont interact so they couldnt be on our earth and i highly doubt both of the worlds would be the same size and moving in the same way (thats assuming dark matter acts the same as "Light" matter)
Hey, I know this is a pain, but could you uplode a version with subtitles? I mean, for a forigner, there were a lot of words that have a double meaning, and you dont want to get a word wrong on that topic. But thanks for ulpoding this all the same, it is so inetresting, in the best, nerdiest way possible!
@sugarhimonkey remember PHYSICS IS COOL! You can be superior without being smug! And people think your opinion matters (which it always does but i mean more than usual) and even if you aren't great at it just by saying "i'm studying physics" makes you sound smart! Also it is the greatest subject EVER! enjoy the homework :)
Would I not be nerdy if I admit this? Ah well, I must admit, at some point I had zoned out like I usually do when my teachers are lecturing. I feel less of a Nerdfighter... :(
When was this interview conducted? If after the neutrino that was discovered to go faster than the speed of light... Hank WTF?! You should have just asked what they found or what they think they found if you didn't want to speculate.
@SepradistPhantom well either condescending or over simplified, the problem with TV of course is this weird race for ratings, you have to make your interviews short and simple. I completely agree with you, the reason I love youtube is because stuff like this is allowed to exist, a 10 minute interview about particle physics- who would look for that on TV? no one! One youtube? yeah.
Subtitles will help me understand what he is talking about, unless you can't translate either. Hi speech was so muddy at first because of Skype? Or just unfamiliar. I am curious.
Thank you, professional smart person, for not speaking in your usual language so us nerds who admire you and aspire to be you can understand
And 3 years later, Higgs Boson officially found!

This is glorious. Why is it so much more interesting hearing this directly from him than through a professor in class??
Aaah god. This video gives me so much hope for the future. The world needs more people who crave answers to the unanswerables.
This makes me so happy to listen to.
I wish he had a better microphone. but thank you for sharing this. It gives me strength to keep studying and learning.
Hank, thank you so so much for doing this video right when I'm becoming super interested in all this stuff! I love it when I can come home from a day of school and then watch one of your videos and learn 10 times more from it than I did during the rest of my day! dftba

The fact that I understood almost all of that (granted, some of it through context) makes me very happy.
This video is gloriously incomprehensible. I love it.
I love how hank just sits there smiling as he listens to him ^^
I'm amazed that I understood a fair amount of that. On the otherhand some of it did go straight over my head...
I wish I was smart enough to fully appreciate this.
This is going to take multiple viewings to appreciate. It's funny, as a Psyc major the first thing I noticed was the changes in posture through out the video.
Really exciting interview here. I love this sort of thing.
I am partially envious and fully happy that you got this importunity! :)
Thank you so very much.
This is absolutely fantastic.
@pete275 You brought up a good point. This is a very vital question. I am disappointed in Hank for not asking it.
I'm a physics student, and this is really getting me pumped for Elementary Particle Physics next semester. =D
an interview with Prof Brian Cox would be awsome
oh my goodness no really this is the greatest thing ever
Looking forward to what they publish. I might not be researching in that field (I'm in quantum computing), but it's still very interesting stuff.
Wow. I managed to watch that whole thing and understand a lot of it. Wow.
Also, heh. Josons.
Really cool, Hank!
The Mah Chair comment had me rolling. I had to pause so I could laugh
Thanks to Chemistry I and the physics class I'm in, plus Hank's quark song I'm proud to say I understood a fair amount of that :) some of it I just had no clue about though... Thanks for this, DFTBA :)
Very fascinating!! Thanks for sharing this interview!

Also when he said 'What's keeping you from falling to the middle of the earth" and you said...um.. My Chair?
Awesome interview. Though it probably would have been easier to understand with subtitles.
@Ameliasadventure I should clarify- I'm only a second year! I love Nerdfighteria. Great video Hank!
All the extra white noise gave me a mean headache, but I made it through the whole interview!
Hank, just so you know, I know an extremely small amount about particle or quantum physics but I watched the whole video just because it's on hankschannel and I know I might learn something
Only two people have said first withing the first ten comments. I love Nerdfighteria. Great video Hank!
I thought you were going to ask about string theory. Now that is some interesting stuff.
@leaguesmanoframsgate Even though the increase wasn't that large, the error was even smaller. The speed of light itself was about 6 sigma (i.e. 6 error bars) away from the measured value. The chance of the neutrinos to travel with the speed of light or slower is about 1/506,797,346 with the given data.
this is awesome, thanks Hank!
It Could just be all this talk about physics but Hank looks rather handsome!
Hank, your life is so cool/awesome!
For a second I thought that were sitting right next to each other.
I enjoy that the view count right now is at 14,356. I'm glad I live in a world that that many people would take 10 minutes to broaden their understanding of the world a little bit.
I feel like I am trying to listen to this underwater...
Nerding out!
this is just so cool!
ucsb! go gauchos! we have so many nobel prize winners teaching at my school right now!
I bet as you typed the description for this, you were having a nerdgasm! x
very interesting video. Any chance you can do more!?
HOLY FREAKING VALEN ON A POGO STICK!
@blessedbyacurse it's not really about being smart, it's about being interested determined and knowledgeable/ having access to material :D
R.I.P. Tevatron :(
This was made of Awesome and had Awesome Sauce (TM) on it

With all the technology at the LHC... you'd think they could afford a better webcam
After watching 9 minutes of this I just realized that they aren't in the same room during this interview.
Just thought i'd give you a reason to giggle
"ma chair" GREEN, Hank
@NightattheRoses pfew, thanks. I was beginning to worry :)
Awesome Sauce!!
Should have asked him more about his college life !
@rinaellarinaella Good point, well made. Yet another reason why the Internet is better than TV - if this had been on any news program then it would have been max. two minutes long with the most condescending questions you could imagine.
My brother is at CERN right now :')
so cool
watching youtube videos that is actually helpful to A level physics work :O
amazing
Hank, tell us how this interview came about!
this is awesome.
love you.
@rabbitwho Oh! I thought you were serious. xD Herpaderp. And this is why emotional markers would be a fantastic addition to written language. >w
@NixLaser This is not okay with me. We need some chemistry nerds to remedy this problem. If I was to write an entry it would say "Joe Incandella discovered the top quark. Hank Green interviewed him once."
Clearly it wouldn't be very good. lol
I got all excited when you guys started talking about dark energy and dark matter.

wowsa you lucky guy hank!
@ClocksInMyPlace I noticed that too... I almost never think like that, but yeah. Haha
Why are they closing Tevatron? It's an important thing that should be around so we can learn, right?
very cool video
I understood....pretty much nothing in this video. But that does not make it any less awesome.
if only the audio was better.
@NethDugan i see your point but no, as you said both matters dont interact so they couldnt be on our earth and i highly doubt both of the worlds would be the same size and moving in the same way (thats assuming dark matter acts the same as "Light" matter)
@NixLaser Welcome to our lovely society. :P
I. FEEL. DUMB.
this looks like it's about CERN and the neutrinos that go faster than the speed of light (big whoop)
"My chaaiirr." Lol
The top quark was found the day I was born :)
Hi Hank!
@CheeseISlikeFEET you are the top quark
7:41 I had to pause the video because I was laughing too much.
@mortaloak Or perhaps straight through our heads...:)
Hey, I know this is a pain, but could you uplode a version with subtitles? Hopefully I get into UCSB!

Unfortunately I cannot listen to this due to the sound quality
Think we could get some captions for this? I'm really interested in what he has to say, but it's really hard to make out the words... :c
@someone332 yes
Yep, my future grade in physics will not be so high....0____0
Subtitles will help me understand what he is talking about, unless you can't translate either. Hi speech was so muddy at first because of Skype? Or just unfamiliar. I am curious.
8:59 dont cross the beams
