Our only communication during the jams is through a Discord server and even though we now have video feeds between everyone in addition to audio, we still can’t really see each other. We also go into these with minimal planning-usually nothing more shared than key, scale, and tempo. A few minutes prior, we decide who’s actually going to start the music (today, it was me). There’s also a predetermined delay from the time a player plays a note to the time the other players hear it (that allows the central server to beat synchronize everything). So, you have to kind of anticipate what other folks are doing so you know when to take a lead or when there are going to be major shifts. Today, we did sorta have a theme (dark ambient for Halloween). We’ve found that, for us, a half-dozen is the most we want in a jam at a time. To my mind, 5-6 is the optimal, since that way, no one is trying to have to play more than one or two parts at any given time.
Great Jam! It’s a lot my more challenging with numerous jammers online I imagine.
