I really like the building designs. They reminded me of a type of movable shelter in Shannon Hale's 'Book of a Thousand days', used by migratory animal herders. The similarities reminded me of something else- the magic. In 'Book of a Thousand Days' there's not a whole lot of magic, but it does exist. The main character Dashti was taught special songs by her mother (sort of like Qyaalyon bird songs) that have a variety of subtle effects, ranging from soothing aches and pains to helping a man survive a fatal injury and triggering a shapeshifter's change to start. That made me think- What if bird songs had similar effects, or did sometime in the past and now simply provide a psychological comfort? Maybe there are traditional songs said to soothe a troubled soul, or to coax a dying one to stay a little longer. I don't know if their songs being actually magical would fit in your magic system, but it was just an idea that popped into my head.

Oh I loved that book! The idea of dashti breaking her word to the princess (can’t remember her name) sort of reminds me of the quallyon trait of vow keeping, dashti was terrified to break her vow to the princess because she thought she wouldn’t go to their idea of “heaven”

just watching through the series and had an idea about writing/keeping track of bloodlines to prevent inbreeding, they could use Kipu. Kipu are a sort of writing used by the incans which involved making notted cords to communicate meaning. if the Qyaalyon are adept at making tasells and knots a knot based writing/communication system would make sense. Kipu would also be very light weight so someone like a preist could make Kipu records as a flock migrates and then leave them in a winter town for use as a referance to prevent inbreeding. Kipu could also be incorperated into clothing either for priests and festivals or as sort of like good luck charms or prayers that could be physicaly tied to a given hunter or warrior.

The mobile Bitohs have flat roofs. That would probably be fine in dry weather, but during rainy weather wouldn't the water would gather in the center? Maybe there's another pole in the center to make the roof peak a little to make the water slide off, or maybe they add one if they see a storm coming.

This was one of your absolute BEST videos!! You have made such an incredible way to explain your thoughts. I totally agree with the bitoh. However, when I had quail, they didn't really want to go back into their cage. Like, they would run all over their mini aviary and refuse to be catched. So maybe children and/or young adults would dare upon their parents to let them sleep outside? I feel this would only apply to spring/summer/fall bitohs, not the bitohs with their perches inside.

    • @mariahpattieworldbuilding4062

oh yes, I'm sure there would be plenty of sleeping outside. Especially the teens and young adults when the weather is hot and they want some space and a breeze. Not during the winter though. My quail practically hibernate during the winter. They are active at dawn and dusk and come out to eat and drink, but they spend most of the day napping in their shelter.

Last summer I was house hunting with my parents and there was this 1 house we saw but had to pass over it. What would've been my room was a large private loft upstairs with a porch that lets u walk straight to the treehouse outside. If we bought that house, I would've painted it like a forest and set up multiple dark fey wings like Maleficent on the walls. Here's an idea to think on Mariah. Hybrids of Qyaalons and Nautikans. Able to swim, run, and fly. Having the benefits of everything the sky, land, and sea has to offer.

    • @Amy_the_Lizard
      @Amy_the_Lizard 2 роки тому +5

I'm not sure they COULD hybridize since their internal reproductive anatomy and embyonic development are so different, not to mention their genetics. Keep in mind, the Nautikans have to lay squishy eggs in water, while the Qyaalyons have more mammalian internal embryo development and live births. If the Nautikan carries the pregnancy, the half Qyaalyon embryo might not be able to develop properly outside of the body as the egg they'd be encased in wouldn't be any different than that of a regular Nautikan egg. It'd be much colder for one (due to not being inside of a warm body,) and the integrity of the outer membrane could either not last long enough for the baby to fully devolop, forcing it to hatch while it's premature, or cause the baby to have difficulty emerging if the the baby finishes devoloping if it develops faster than a Nautikan would. Not to mention that it probably wouldn't have fully formed gills due to one parent not having any, and could easily drown after hatching if it wasn't a fast enough swimmer to reach air. Meanwhile if the Qyaalyon carries the pregnancy, the inside of their body might be too warm for the half Nautikan embryo, and depending on differences in development speed the baby could either be born prematurely, or be born too late, which would make the birth much more difficult and increase the odds of both parties dying. Additionally these differences could result in the embryo receaving the wrong amount of nutrients at the wrong time, which could also mess stuff up. Not to mention the really high likelihood that the embryo would be mistaken as a foreign body and destroyed by the immune system or increased risk of blood type incompatabilites, which happen often enough when both parents are the same species (note: this could occur in the opposite scenario as well, but is a little less likely since most development would occur outside of the body.) Plus the baby would probably have to be kept in water, since baby Nautikans have to keep their tails wet (though to be fair a hybrid might have legs - though they probably wouldn't be fully formed, and probably closer to what Nautikans get during their metamorphisis.) The child also probably wouldn't have fully formed lungs either, as baby Nautikans don't hatch with the ability to breath air, so it's entirely possible that the hybrid wouldn't be able to breath air or water. If there was an oxygen chamber like what's used on premature human infants without fully formed lungs the baby might be able to survive, but the odds would be much slimmer in a fantasy setting...

Just a thought that I had when you said "children reuniting with thier grand-parents", whatdo they do when elders die and it's not winter? Do they send a messenger to ask the flock to go home for the funeral? Do they just make the funeral between elders and sent a messenger to inform the flock of the death?
I guess they don't just wait until winter to inform the flock XD
Because, even if winter is probably the deadliest season, I'll guess that most elders will die during the three other seasons combined ^^
And a subsidary question, what happen when a migratory quaalyon die? I guess that infant mortality and accidents are frequent, do they also travel to the wintertownto bury their dead or do they do that in the plains and only keep the skull? How does the elders accept the death of their loved ones far from them? ^^'

There might need to be some additional structural support under the stove, or you could move it to the cellar, which shouldn't be a problem for the temperature up top, since heat rises. That way, the chimney would also double as structural support for the wooden floor.

The long term housing causes some concerns, specifically when talking about the elders. You mentioned that the divid between the two levels is crossed by a ladder. While this would work for most people I think elderly people would struggle with this, as my grandparents would struggle to deal with stairs. Meaning that half the home would be unusable without assistance, which would be a large portion of the year with the flock going around the plains. Perhaps some sort of elevator could be made, using a windmill, given their heavy use of tarps. But that might be a bit too much tech.

Also, I keep losing track of which type of house has what, so I always wonder why they migrate so much if they have to dig huge pits until I remember.

This might be a little late to post, but have you considered how the winter might be different lengths depending on where each city is located? Those further south would have shorter winters (assuming this continent is in the northern hemisphere), while the northernmost would have much longer winters, upwards of six months or more if they are far enough north. Where I live in the Canadian Prairies winter routinely lasts 7 or 8 months, and the planting season for farmers and gardeners doesn't truly begin until May. But on the Western side of the mountains, with the influence of the ocean, spring begins as early as late Feb. Prairies tend to make for harsher climates, which fits with the quaylians, but I feel like you haven't explored all the implications.

Very well timed topic for what I've been working on lately.
I have Pixies who live on a moon with a humanoid cat/neko like race. Their gas giant takes 4 years to orbit their star so each season ends up being about 1 year long.
The pixies don't do much migrating as they live on a sacluted island chain about the size of Ireland. Though many of the cat people do migrate inland during winter than out to the coast during warmer years. I'm unsure how this will change once they get to an early to mid industrial era.

Great stuff!! Some things to consider:
If these houses are built for the elderly, you may want to keep accessibility in mind. Granny likely won’t be able to use that ladder. Perhaps a single story instead, with two separate buildings for living vs storage? Or perhaps the whole family sleeps in the rafters and the floor is for storage?
Also, regarding construction you should check out Norman pit houses which use a similar (if rougher) style of construction. There is a great UA-camr (Gewissae or something?) who does this by hand. They don’t lay beams around the bottom (which would rot), just bury the upright posts about a forearm deep. Usually, the ends of posts which will touch earth are charred to protect them from insects and rot. Also, river clay would not protect against moisture in a building for very long. You’d want lime mortar, perhaps wattle/daub, or similar for that. Come to think - dung, grass, and mud are the primary ingredients in wattle and daub, all eminently available on grasslands. Food for thought? 🤔

I think that the pigeon avians would be not respected by the other avian races, because of them taking messages and work from the simonans. Maybe if the pigeons were messangers they'd be payed by the simonans with resources? They could be nomads like the Quaalyon, carrying small tents with them as they flew, or maybe also having small towns scattered across the continent. The reason I imagine the simonans giving resources to the pigeons is because like, feeding the pigeons, y'know? I haven't put much though into it, but I though it would be an interesting idea.

I don't know how you could incorporate this but I recently learned of a bird species called the prairie falcon. They are closely related to the peregrine falcon (the fastest living animal) and saw a video of the hunting. It was so fasted I literally blink and missed it. Their hunting method is to find unaware prey and they fly at them at high speeds, then curling their talons closed and "punching" them at 50 to 75 mph instantly killing or disabling their prey. I'm not sure if you could (or should) incorporate this but thinks it's could be a way to add in a fast flier that packs a punch (hehe), hunting companion (ie falconry), or just an interesting monster or hunting style specific to a certain flock :D. Or its just a cool bird fact who to say.

Like if there was a poly relationship and they were ostracized by the monogomous parings. Maybe there could be a flock specifically for queer Qyaalyns? Maybe other flocks shun them, but they were one of the few specialized flocks, like that all female flock you've mentioned, to survive for multiple generations; even despite the preconcieved notion that they'd die out from a smaller population of couples which could reproduce. I mean, they could even take in children from other flocks who were wiped out or whose parents simply didn't want them... The possibilities are endless!

Just a few suggestions for the housing that came to mind, the ground floor might be raised a few inches just to prevent dirt and dust from blowing in through the doorway. Another thing is they might cover the rocks with clay or something similar to keep the stone from becoming drafty in the winter. If they are storing stuff underground they would also have to worry about keeping the area dry if any water started to seep in it would become a growing zone for mold and mildew, if they have shelves and stuff along the walls it would be hard to tell it was growing. One last suggestion the basement would probably be pretty cool in the summer maybe some elders can sleep down there to keep out of the heat during the hottest days of the summer. It is why hobbit houses exist they were strongly insulated by the dirt around them which kept them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Higher elevated homes because they can fly, You know?

On your map of the town, it shows a dedicated air strip to the west. Why is that?
When I imagine a bird-human hybird society, they wouldn't go to a dedicated place to take off, they would just do so from wherever they happen to be standing, with a running start if needed.
Love this series and it inspires me to go just as in depth in my worldbuilding.

Or maybe a few areas like corrals / helipads. That way they can take off and land at some place near their destination, but wouldn't make an enormous mess from the dust stirred by takeoff.

Just binged all your videos and I gotta say, your world building has really inspired me to diversify my own! I am curious about how your qyaalyon would/could potentially resolve a specific type of conflict, though. If oath/promise breaking is so heavily looked down upon, what would happen if two oaths end up conflicting one another. Example, say qyaalyon A made a promise never to enter qyaalyon B's hunting territory for some reason (maybe a past argument over who claimed a kill) later down the line qyaalyon A makes an oath to protect qyaalyon C. Easy enough right? But, uh oh, qyaalyon C finds themselves in danger in qyaalyon B's territory. Is qyaalyon A considered an oath breaker if they end up choosing to honor one promise over another? (I guess more context/detail would be necessary to truly decide which route is the correct to take, like is Qyaalyon B there to witness the tresspass, was qyaalyon C knowingly being reckless and getting into danger on purpose, etcetera, but it is fun to think about~)

I'm just theorizing here, but perhaps this is something that flocks argue about and flock splits are even caused by? There is no perfect answer, thus no perfect solution, thus more problems.
Though that's just what I think, and I could be totally off

Random video recommendation so missing some things, but- What do you mean by diversity exactly, and how do they not homogenize if they're so mobile and intermixed for so long? Cosmopolitanism only functions with constant inflow of the separate stock and even then only for so long while those conditions last before the descendants of that cosmopolitan center become a new demographic of their own. You wouldn't have a variety of different feathers for long if there were no efforts to preserve them.

Since leather is heavier than fabric, would it not be more practical to use as much fabric as possible for the temporary tents. The walls / sides that do not have the same need to be waterproof. Weight is extremely important for a flying culture. They would count every gram.

Yes, if they had access to it. The Blacks might from the Agians, and the silvers could have gotten lotus linen from the Nautikans in the past. But they don’t have the means to produce it themselves. They might have woven some fabrics from mammoth wool historically, but those are gone now too.

    Great video, as always!
    Quick question.
How would Qyaalyens react to a person that has some form of "fast movement" magic?
    Like, "Lightning Step", or something?
Essentialy, someone who is capable of keeping pace with a hunter in full flight, while remaining in the ground themselfs.
Would there be some respect for the land dweller, or would they be terrified?
Could there may be myths about some monster, that, if a hunter was spottet by this, creature/abomination, they had to keep flying until exhaustion took it's toll, not able to return to the flock, to not risk the destruction of it?
Could also double as a cautionary tale to always pay close attention to your surroundings, now that I think about it.

large towns like this usualy require something akin to a government or court, i imagine something like the viking "thing" woud be apropriate were representatives from eatch flok come together to judge crimes and make desitions on whatever conserns the hole of the town.
this woud in turn lead to power within the flock being fokused on their yinante but the power to projekt being fokused in their senoir-most elder as they woud represent the flok in trails & disputes

I know you said the elders stay throughout the year, but I was wondering if maybe pregnant/infants stay until they are able to fly on their own. And much less relevant question, you mentioned that they migrate 9 months of the year which made me wonder if your world also has 12 months and how long does each month last. I apologize if you've answered this before, this is my introduction to your channel.

Like build a more sturdy permanant hut/cottage somewhere for them and their partner/family to live and just hunt in their area and they can visit the winter towns to see friends/family who flew off for the spring-summer? Or would it just be totally unheard of?
