  • Old Friend No. 2 - Behringer SL3242FX Pro mixing console has left home.
    Pretty straightforward design. No real problems. One pot is missing an end cap.
    I have used this solely for 24-channel capture, by exploiting the channel inserts as feeds to/from a multi-track recorder. Its conventional mixing console capabilities have only been employed to generate artist and control room monitor mixes during recording.
    I think this console was primarily designed for live sound reinforcement, as indicated by its graphic EQ on the output or monitor channels, and separate mono / LF tuneable subwoofer feed.
    Behringer no longer publish the user manual for this discontinued product on their website, but copies are available elsewhere on the web - just search for "SL3242FXPRO User Manual".
    NOTE: Although this may suffice as a stand-alone presentation, it is the first part of a two-part video. The second, longer part consists of a demonstration of all the parallel digital effects generated by the onboard processor. It will be uploaded subject to duration limits imposed by UA-cam.

    Hi - This isn't designed for studio use - there are no dedicated multitrack recorder returns.
    But as each channel has a TRS insert point, you can use breakout leads for send (to recorder) and return (from recorder). Your recorder's input/playback monitor switching will allow each channel's live signal or recorded sound to be heard.
    Or you could dedicate half the channels for input and the rest for returns!
    I only used this for getting 24 tracks live to tape - all editing was in my DAW.

    Its designed for studio or live use!.....you can use the sub group outs to connect to a multi track recorder, there are very few mixers around with 24 outs ! For home recording there fine .

    how would you use this in a studio environment? only, in my last studio, i had to have a desk that has as many outputs as there were inputs which fed into a multi channel audio interface that ran into the computer via firewire, from pictures i've seen, there doesn't seem to be any outputs around the back, only the stereo outs of the XLR left and right, the quarter inch jack left and right and the phono left and right, could you explain or demonstrate how to use this in a studio?

      It sounds like you need to learn about using mixers in general, and this is outside the scope of my channel. If you had read my channel intro, you would have seen that I advise people to (a) google for the user manual, and (b) look at general tutorial videos. The manual for this unit (if you own or are using one) is here: static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/84929.pdf and a good tutorial to start with is here: ua-cam.com/video/KHZhDA1T2NI/v-deo.html

    would it be possible for me to still use my interface for recording and audio playback and still use this mixingboard to mix?

      I'm unclear what you are hoping to do. You can connect a PC audio interface to it in various configurations.
      e.g.
      - PC interface record in from main outs, tape outs or subgroup outs
      - PC interface playback out to channel-ins, tape return or FX returns
      For a how-to, see this video: ua-cam.com/video/dA-mg9IxOFk/v-deo.html

    how do set up drums using effect

    • @FarewellOldFriends
      @FarewellOldFriends  9 років тому

      Hi Leonard
      If you are thinking of using this mixer for recording, it is not an ideal unit for creating a highly-controlled 'studio style' drum mix - there are not enough compressor or gating effects for each drum. I think you really need a digital mixer or lots of outboard compressor/gate units for anything more sophisticated. Or just get a multi-channel interface, capture the drum mics 'clean', and do all the dynamic and EQ processing in your DAW.
      If using this for live PA, you would just have to build the best mix you could, using the channel EQ's to separate the individual instruments, to two of the subs as a stereo pair, and then bring them into the main mix to suit.
      Maybe others would could give better advice if you could make it clear what your particular application is (recording / live etc.)

    Can I use the main & sub out puts at the same time?

    • @FarewellOldFriends
      @FarewellOldFriends  8 років тому

      +Paul C Hi Paul - Yes you can.
      This is not clear in the manual (currently available at www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/84928.pdf), but as far as I recall, each Subgroup's SUBGROUP OUT socket is always active, whether or not you also assign that subgroup to the main mix bus with the LEFT and RIGHT buttons.
      This is a really useful feature - but don't forget that each input channel's assignment buttons route that channel to SUB 1/2 and/or SUB 3/4 as stereo pairs, as determined by the channel pan pots.
      Hope that helps!

      FarewellOldFriends Thanks it helped a bit, I'm setting up for an Improv session w/ my band Sat I'm going to do it our old-fashioned way improving new music to an odd film I wish I could go direct to a cd but I don't have the equipment so I'm going direct to a dvd with the movie. Thanks again

      +Paul C Sounds like the best solution at the moment given your imminent gig. Playing with a new recording setup needs working out in a low-pressure environment. Cheers!

      +FarewellOldFriends Thanks again for your help. We went right to a Cd burner but it took some special cd disk not the standard one? I also trying to get a back up on a HiFi stereo VCR (you get more meat on a tape then through it into the computer at a later date.) But nothing was working for me? it always happens to me as soon as the band shows up nothing works. But, some one else worked the boards this time around. But the recording really had no bottom end to it. it's really tough to do it as you're playing & two of the guys are some what professional at recording & they had problems. I think if I was able to get that back up It would have sounded good like in the head phones...

      +Paul C Hi Paul.
      " it always happens to me as soon as the band shows up nothing works" - that's a universal law of life, I'm afraid!
      CD burners are a bit of a throwback these days, and need discs that are capable of being burned (by definition) at real-time, i.e. 1x speed. Unfortunately, most modern CD-R blanks are designed for burning at 16x speed or faster, and some may have a problem at real-time. Don't forget that you have to hit the 'Finalize' button on the recorder when you've finished recording, to make the disc compatible with regular CD players - that catches a lot of people out!
      I experimented with VHS Hi-Fi recorders 20 years ago as a possible alternative master recording solution, especially since I could record very long shows on a single tape, costing next to nothing. However, when I started doing it, I realised that the 'Hi-Fi' soundtrack channel was intrinsically not very hi-fi, and relied on very powerful (like dbx) noise reduction to achieve its claimed fantastic signal-to-noise ratio. In practice, this resulted in hiss and frame-related clatter being pumped up and down during signal transients. A distinctly unpleasant effect. Although the system was spectacular for movie soundtracks (in its day, given the quality of the accompanying VHS video!), it was never transparent enough for proper high fidelity mastering, and I abandoned it as an option very quickly.
      You could think of buying or borrowing a cheap solid-state field recorder to capture the audio to an SD card. There are dozens of models that would do the job, from Zoom, Tascam, Roland etc. That would give extended recording time beyond the limitations of a single 80 minute CD.
      In terms of bass, I suspect your PA may have plenty of subwoofer power, giving you plenty of bass in the room, but which will not be on the direct recording.
      Getting a nicely balanced mix to your recorder at the same time as creating a practical FOH PA mix is not easy. Ideally you would want to split your mic/line signals to two independent mixers and dedicate a separate person to PA and recording mixes. Or preferably record multi-channel and mix down later (I currently use a Behringer XR-18 to do just that).
      Cheers and happy experimenting!

      It does have a built-in tuneable low-pass filter for use with a sub-woofer, but note that this has a separate fader from the main LR bus output, so you would have to bring both faders up and down together - I found it difficult maintaining a proper balance between the levels of the normal bus outputs and the sub-woofer when I tried it. Time to experiment!

    would this board be good for home studio

    • @FarewellOldFriends
      @FarewellOldFriends  10 років тому +1

      Hi David,
      Well, yes and no! I had always thought of it as a live PA desk for a medium-sized band. Of course, you could use it for a home studio, but you might consider its down-sides...
      It takes up a lot of space from side to side, due to its large number of channels. In practice, few home studios would ever need to deploy 24 microphones at once (or could even afford to). I prefer to stick with a mic-pre interface - 8 channels is normally more than enough - and my PC-based DAW for home studio work.
      It's nice to think you could impress visitors / clients with a 'real' desk, but this unit's short faders look a bit basic, and at the end of the day, this is just a Behringer! Also, if you have effects built into your DAW, there's no need to have them on the desk.
      I bought this for 24-channel location recording, effectively only using the mic preamps, but that has been superseded by a multi-channel PC interface.
      Hope that helps!

      Hi Kevin - You can find the manual here: www.behringer.com/assets/SL2442FX-PRO_P0244_M_EN.pdf
      The main inserts are the same as the channel inserts, i.e. each channel has its own insert on a stereo 1/4" jack wired tip=send, ring=return.
