  • I recently bought the iPhone 12 and decided to test its audio capabilities for drum cam videos. I used FiLMiC Pro application for testing separate mics (iPhone has 3 mics) and also for better video settings. There's also a clip with Zoom H4n Pro and DSLR Canon 80D for a reference.
    I think iPhone 12 compresses the loud drums quite much but it also sounds pretty good with some stereo image. When using the iPhone camera app you can get a stereo sound but with FiLMiC Pro you can choose which mic you want (mono) or use output source via the lightning adapter. I had a cheap Behringer U-Control UCA222 between my Universal Audio Apollo x8p and iPhone 12. That way I could record the sound I had on my headphones straight to the video (1:21).
    Anyway, the video quality is really great compared to my Canon 80D + Sigma 18-35 setup (1080p) even with the front camera. I guess I will record my future videos with this iPhone 12 :)
    Leave a comment which video was the best.

    I'm impressed, the iPhone captured the drums quite well, because drums are very dynamic and the cymbals can ruin the video. Very well done.
    Great to see you again Kai! Blessings!

      Tony, me too :) Sometimes the front camera (selfie cam) distorts with hi-hat barks or loud crashes but the main camera didn't clip at all and had a full sound.

    I'm shocked how well the iPhone mics picked up the kit. My iPhone X died today; I think I'll be picking up a 12 now. Thanks for this! Well done video.

      Thanks Jed! This Zildjian Kerope 22" is one of my jazziest rides but I have maybe 10 brighter alternatives :)

    Great video, very impressed. The iPhone colours looked great right out of camera too.

      Thanks Donal! Yes, great quality right out of the camera. I had exposure set to -0.7 on 2 first clips and with FiLMiC I had colour temperature around 4100 K. Shutter speed was 60 on all the clips.

      KaitsuDrums Awesome I love the FiLMiC PRO app. When you can get the iso down to 22 it really helps with the shadow issues small phone sensors have 😁

    First off: Kai, congratulations with your new iPhone 12! Of all the ‘takes’ the first one is my favourite; the fourth is able to catch the lower tones, but unfortunately lacks on the upper regions. The last one has a very thin sound, a huge difference with the first take.

      Nico, yes the stock camera app/main camera had a full sound and I agree with you. Thanks!

    iPhone's audio quality is better than Zoom h4n pro, that's very strange. I have Zoom h4n pro but I am thinking to buy an iphone, great content!

      It's really good but if you are too close to hi-hat, iPhone mic might clip that. If you shoot 2-3 meters away, no problem.

    Hey Kai, you need to do a studio tour at some point! :)

      Hey Julian, check out my previous video, there's a short studio tour at the end of the video. I'll record a better one later :)

    Great experiment! Might be a strange request, but could you please tell me what gear you used to mount your phone on the tripod? Whenever I mount my phone on a tripod, each bass drum hit shakes the picture. It does not happen handheld though...

      Thanks!! I used Arkon Tripod Mount and Slik Pro 400 DX tripod. I just ordered a Joby GripTight PRO 2 mount to replace Arkon mount. Maybe your floor shakes a little bit when you hit your bass drum and that affect shakiness? Try to put some dampening for the camera tripod feet if that helps to solve your problem.

    You can really hear the AGC in the iPhone screw with the sound, especially if you listen to the sustain of the ending cymbal crash.

      Yeah true...If I had recorded further away it might have been better. Now the iPhone was maybe 1,5 meter from the snare and it's pretty loud instrument :)

      @@KaitsuDrums Thanks for making your video accessible for the blind. Not sure how you did that but, it helped greatly. VoiceOver tells me at what part of the video you change out for what camera. Very helpful.
      ...
      I actually liked what the iphone did. It compressed instead of clipping. One of your cameras almost clipped instead of compressing. Don't remember which one. They all sounded pretty good but, what blew me away was the stereo field on the iphone.
      I'm actually planning on upgrading to the 12 this week. That will be an upgrade from my 6S pluss that I'm on now. Pretty substantial.

    Hey Kai, can you tell me what is the positioning for your iphone 12 for this video? Thanks

    • @KaitsuDrums
      @KaitsuDrums  3 роки тому

      Hi Maliki, it's about 1 meter from the closest drum/cymbal. I used the main camera without any zoom and there's no cropping.

    The phone microphone sounds very good, but I prefer the input from your UAD Apollo. Can you please share what converter or cable or more details about the components you are using to input audio through the lightning port? Thanks

    • @KaitsuDrums
      @KaitsuDrums  3 роки тому

      Alejandro, I had a Behringer U-Control UCA222 (cheap USB soundcard) connected between iPhone and Apollo (from control output). From iPhone I had lightning to USB cable and it worked fine without external power. So this way I can have a different mix for my headphones and for the iPhone, maybe a backing track/click louder for the headphones and lower for the final video.
