I'm a metal head by nature, but Zevon hit a nerve in me right from the first time I heard "Excitable boy". He is by far one of the greatest songwriters in my generation. Rest in peace!!!
I've been reading some bottom feeders' comments on WZ, people who just can't get past all the sensationalism, hung up on the wild stuff, the salacious stories, and I can't decide whether to hurl myself against the wall or pity them. First of all, when you focus on that crap, you're ragging on a man who can't defend himself. Not that Warren would condescend to such a waste of time. The real tragedy is when all you credit Zevon with are his all too human shortcomings, you miss the exquisite beauty of his words and music, and miss the fact that, wild child that he sometimes was, he never failed to give far more than he took. Your bloody loss.
Kat Harper You are right; this man bled fom his soul into these songs and into his life...to feel the need to dissect the man means they who mean to do so float, are not ducks, and therefore are made of wood......
So glad to know I was preaching to the choir in at least one instance. Warren's words and music have been a much-needed anchor for me, not only in my day-to-day life, they have more times than I can count kept me from throwing up my hands and giving up on humanity. But if our race can produce even one such incandescent soul as his, well, then, maybe we're worth putting up with.
Thank you. Like Billy Bob Thornton said, "For those of us who know and love Warren's music, it's our duty to spread the Gospel according to Warren!" Makes me nuts he's not in the r&r hall of shame. Er, fame.
These live appearances kept Warren on the map. Dave was his biggest fan and did a lot for his career. Thanks David, you deserve a big thank you for having Warren on the show so often.
Having a backing vocal trio really adds loads to this performance yeah. It makes me want to hear it on some of his other songs. The whole band is great btw.
I'm not negating the supporting players, but Zevon's voice and grit are always the foremost part of his songs. Punch you in the gut and make you weak in the knees...he brought the fire!
It’s hard for me to believe that this video is almost 30 years old. His voice resonates. It will never be matched. You can’t start it like a car you can’t stop it with a gun. That was it. That was the line that define the relationship and the feelings between my late wife and myself.
A truly magnificent musician, poet, and man. He wasn't afraid to tackle contentious subjects, and I really wished he was here now, to opine about the state of the world today
5 years on from your comment and Transverse City is a perfect album for our COVID times. It's got peternance and polarity in equal parts. Half of the songs ring true to the past 18 months, half speak of an old world -some things decades old, some things that disappeared as recently as the fourth week of March, 2020.
willie on the plate folks.been hooked on warren since he walked into my heart in the mid seventies after my war years and made a home there.no more beautiful soul ever walked this earth.his haunting ballads and music will be an inspiration untill I take my last breath.rip warren. If you guys want a good show. There are a couple live shows in their entirety on UA-cam. I believe it's Warren Zevon at the Capitol Theater that is my favorite. It's earlier so it's missing some songs I like, as I'm a fan of his whole career. But it's a damn good show, that I just sit down and watch every now and again.
All the true poets of Rock&Roll struggled with demons of one kind or another. Warren Zevon was blessed and cursed by his creativity but listening to gems like this i'm so glad he stuck around long enough to leave an artistic legacy that younger musicians can draw from. He should definitely be in the RRHOF. No question about it. R.I.P. poet prince.
I can (and have) already seen our differences! You like the more subtle and I like the more rockin' but that's ok cause I like all of this music. Did you get "Us and Them" by PF from me!!!???
Warren may not have ever hit the top of the charts, but he had respect. No amount of money or number of platinum records can ever buy that. He will be missed but as cliched as it it is will live forever through his music.
Warren....against all the odds, contrary to the predictions, I'm still here! My hero, my inspiration, my god of music....Happy Birthday! Today, at 3:00 p.m.E.T., my soul mate, Brody, and I will be laughing in the face of Sorrow and joining our lives in marriage. We invite all of our fellow Zevonites to join us in spirit, crank up your favourite WZ song, and wish us well. At the same time, we'll be paying homage to the man whose fight with the monster inside him has been the template for my own struggle. Think what you like, but I could never have made it this FAR--and stayed sane--without Warren's music, his courageous example, and the strength those things give me, every day. Nor would I have even tried without the love, encouragement and steady support of my Brody. The two men in my life...I'd be lost without them both. And Warren, my friend...ROCK the Pillars of Heaven, you Renegade, you! Happy Birthday!
Timothy Stoutland And THIS is my dear comp buddy! Thank you from us both! Kat and Brody Jennings You Zevonites out there...thank you all for the incredible karmic vibe y'all sent us at our wedding/Warren's birthday party! Enjoy EVERY sandwich!!! K&B
Timothy Stoutland I keep getting requests to contact you. I have replied via Google+ and UA-cam. No longer able to reply by text, as I dumped your thread, as I said I would. Brody forgot to notebook yr fone number. Sorry....I can only reply by UA-cam or Google+
Notice how these artists never sound better than when they perform on Letterman. It's been that way for over 25 years now. Proof indeed that The World's Most Dangerous Band is a mighty musical weapon.
we can all learn a lesson from Warrens life, for instance, he was often underated but he never gave up and in the end, his last album, the wind won the only 2 grammys at the awards ceremony
Wow don't you just want everyone in the world to be listening to this with you so they can experience the greatness and sense how much WZ fans admire this man; shortcomings and all (who ain't got shortcomings?)
songwriters like Warren, who was dearly loved by so many should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. If he'd lived longer I'd like to believe he would be there!
Completely agree. The RRHOF claims to place a high priority on 'influence' which Warren certainly did for many artists including more than a few already enshrined.
I've had this on my favs list for many years and I keep coming back to it when I need to relieve myself from the dreck that is current pop music. There was really a time when we had artists creating this instead. Missing Dave's band these days as well.
One brilliant rocker-cant wait for the vault to open-Get on the rock and rol hall of fame and demand this rocker gets in asap-deserved to be there long ago-keep rockin
I dreamed last night 5/31/2014 Hope you're not fighting with the Angel's Warren, see you soon, here's one for you... I dreamed last night; I dreamed it was my last night, I rose from my sleep and looked in mirror, and thought, If this my last night, I wonder what I’ve done for other’s I stayed all alone for ever so long, to make wrong in this world right, I dreamed a dream last night, that I’d stop all my running and stand up and fight… I dreamed last night that the Angel’s in heaven were watching over me I dreamed that this one Angel was inside my heart, She never failed me even when I dreamed, or l lay awake wondering, who could ever love me…. Oh Angel of mercy, so close in my heart, whenever you need me to guard the Gates of Heaven… I ’ll be right here beside you, I’ve been awakened , my heart has been set right…
he was the best , will love warren forever live in philly and saw him every time he came to town when he opened for other acts or when he played the smaller venues , actually stood on the other side of his piano while he played at the 23 east . i'll never forget that
extremely touching and extremely beautiful...every time i find this song...i am surprised how much it touches my heart more than the time before! his voice sends shivers thru me..i cant figure out why i never knew this artist til the tube!
A beautiful golden man with a voice which reaches deep into my soul. Warrren Zevon is one of those spirits the Universe makes only one of; because he is that exceptional being who is suffused with so many gifts, he has no peers. He is an Absolute: Irreplaceable; Irresistible; Illuminating...he is Perfection. There is no one to equal him...on ANY level. Physically, Intellectually; Musically, Lyrically...he is Matchless. And Warren Zevon is the only Deity I worship...the only Deity I NEED. He is a Legend...and he lives FOREVER!!!
That is a great gift, to have seen him live. I first got into him when Life'll Kill Ya came out. Didn't hear much from him for awhile, until he died in 03 of course. Now he has taken up permanent residency in my music catalog -- perhaps my most cherished albums are by WZ.
I just picked up Warren's CD "Learning to Flinch"Brilliant. He does a fantastic acoustic version of "searching for a Heart"The man was so underrated by so many. But not by us.
There's something totally charismatic about Zevon. As he aged, he became even more so. If you explore him enough, your 'chills' will get even more so as he was so enigmatic. I became so interested in him from jump street and his Exciteable Album, that I read his bio, I"ll Sleep When I'm Dead", available from the library system and became thoroughly addicted to this man. It's almost eerie, dearie.
WZ was always one of the few who could make me cry with a song like this and then want to kick out the jams with a song like I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. 35 years after I first heard him, I still love listening and get sad when I think of him being gone
My favorite love song, and maybe the reason for my insomnia. Not your typical lubby dubby crap, but spoken from the heart, the heart of a true poet (if you know even a small portion of his other works).
I got a guitar lesson today from Greg Douglas (Steve Miller Band) and we were talking about Zevon's music. Most of his fame has come through the covers that other people have done of his music but he was a musical genius. Probably a pain in the ass to work with in the studio, but the end product was always just magical. This song is no exception...
Yep, that's the stuff right there. Jeez thanks so much to the one who posted this amazing performance. And to WZ for doing it. And to Dave for hosting it. etc. Truly priceless.
Few better lyric writers in the history of music. What a great artist.
I'm a metal head by nature, but Zevon hit a nerve in me right from the first time I heard "Excitable boy". He is by far one of the greatest songwriters in my generation. Rest in peace!!!

Very well said, in both posts....
Thank you. Like Billy Bob Thornton said, "For those of us who know and love Warren's music, it's our duty to spread the Gospel according to Warren!" Makes me nuts he's not in the r&r hall of shame. Er, fame.
+Kat Harper Fuck em
These live appearances kept Warren on the map. Dave was his biggest fan and did a lot for his career. Thanks David, you deserve a big thank you for having Warren on the show so often.
Jackson Browne.
Can we just talk about his bass player and background singers? Such a fantastic accompaniment to one of the greatest singer/ songwriters of all time.
Absolutely! They were amazing.
Having a backing vocal trio really adds loads to this performance yeah. It makes me want to hear it on some of his other songs. The whole band is great btw.

pure genius... "they say love conquers all... you can't start it like a car... you can't stop it with a gun"

why isn't he in the rock and roll hall of fame?
The1goodguy No idea but since he isn't it just proves the hall of fame is a joke.
ASK TRUMP-ASS
he should be in the hall....but knowing what he was like he probably wouldn't care...his music lives on in my heart...yours too i expect!
Probably because he's truly a class act & would've likely rejected the mere thought of belonging to some bourgeois place like it's become.....
No, but they're working on building his own museum.
This song brings me to tears every-time I hear it, so much emotion, it's incredible.
I can't listen with dry eyes either
They don't write song like this any more, Great Songwriter.
This is rock, this is music, this is art, this is a genius' soul laid bare. RIP...
this is warren zevon..
Born 70 years ago today. RIP, Warren.
Dr Zevon knew so much more than he ever thought he knew.
There is a certain pride to being unnoticed by that institution.

Greatness has zero to do with fame. His fame was fleeting, he made no money but he his intellectual music was genius.

Well when you do, that will probably make you cry also! I sat here and cried listening to US and Them by PF.

never tire of this song
this song and lyrics make me understand the beauty of loving and missing someone.Rest in peace Warren.
Amen
Perhaps the most underrated American singer/songwriter. Talent unmatched. Humor both poignant and pointed.
Perhaps Warren should have written song about himself called "Mr. Underrated." Great music, Great lyrics. One of my favorites.
Wow don't you just want everyone in the world to be listening to this with you so they can experience the greatness and sense how much WZ fans admire this man; shortcomings and all (who ain't got shortcomings?)
Mr. Zevon gave us so much awesome music over the course of many years; it was truly an honor to have been a part of the same generation as he!
One of my favorite Zevin tunes. More mainstream than most of his, but still had his twisty lyrics. This live version is the best.
songwriters like Warren, who was dearly loved by so many should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. If he'd lived longer I'd like to believe he would be there!
Completely agree. The RRHOF claims to place a high priority on 'influence' which Warren certainly did for many artists including more than a few already enshrined.
It's hard to pick a favorite song from a songwriter as talented as Warren Zevon, but I really love this one.
Still missing you, Warren.
I've had this on my favs list for many years and I keep coming back to it when I need to relieve myself from the dreck that is current pop music. There was really a time when we had artists creating this instead. Missing Dave's band these days as well.

He was a one-of-a-kind,one of the best. His range was amazing, and I'm sure that people will be listening to him for a long time.
Beautiful song and performance. I keep coming back to watch it again and again. Thanks for the upload.
What a great performance of this beautiful song. This is one of Warren's songs that should have been a big hit for him.
Dylan really admired this guy; this song gives a good idea why.
I got this song from watching "Grand Canyon" staring Danny Glover..very good film
well worth a watch. Nice song.
What a true gem he was. As a songwriter makes my alltime short list. An original whose like we won't see again anytime soon.
IF WARREN DIDN'T HAVE THE GOODS, I DON'T KNOW WHO IN THE HELL DID. HOLDS UP EXTREMELY WELL.
The best ever love song. Warren Zevon is irreplacable.
I dreamed last night 5/31/2014 Hope you're not fighting with the Angel's Warren, see you soon, here's one for you...
I dreamed last night; I dreamed it was my last night,
I rose from my sleep and looked in mirror, and thought,
If this my last night, I wonder what I’ve done for other’s
I stayed all alone for ever so long, to make wrong in this world right,
I dreamed a dream last night, that I’d stop all my running and stand up and fight…
I dreamed last night that the Angel’s in heaven were watching over me
I dreamed that this one Angel was inside my heart,
She never failed me even when I dreamed, or l lay awake wondering,
who could ever love me….
Oh Angel of mercy, so close in my heart, whenever you need me to guard the Gates of Heaven…
I ’ll be right here beside you, I’ve been awakened , my heart has been set right…
What a mind blowing, incredible voice.
A true original smart lyrics beautiful melodies
I am going through this now. Three and a half years down the damn drain, fellas.
Even if you don't speak, it will speak to you...
My favorite Warren Zevon tune! Check out his son, Jordan's version on Letterman's show [2007]. It gave me chills. Warren would be proud!
Thank God this beautiful man blessed this planet with his wonderful genius.
a very beautiful song by warren...can't believe it's been 8 years since he's been gone..
This is real music...what the kids listen to in 2019 is abreivated to E.F.B- Entertainment For Braindead
Thank You Warren for all you gave us, R.I.P
The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a Rock N Roll Hall of Shame without Warren Zevon.
Great song, nice backing vocals and super tasty guitar work.
Now Thats a Song ! One Cool Dude with a Smokey Silk Voice...Maaaan > This Guy left us to soon... R.I.P. Warren Zevon. God Bless.
A bunch of pros doing what they do best.

A great song by a great artist that was used in one of the greatest films ever done by Hollywood.
I just picked up Warren's CD "Learning to Flinch"Brilliant. He does a fantastic acoustic version of "searching for a Heart"The man was so underrated by so many. But not by us.
Warren, a truly great and underappreciated artist.
love conquers all, you can't start like a car you can't stop it with a knife. such true words! love him.
Wow! What a talent Warren was!
There's something totally charismatic about Zevon. As he aged, he became even more so.

Lawyers guns and money brought me to this beautiful song cant go back
Listening in June 2020. Never more poignant.

This is so beautiful. So happy it exists.
Great song.What a talent.What a loss.
Thank you so much for this.
This song really grabs my heart, miss ya Warren............. :(
Love it! he looks healthy and handsome
I got Learning to Flinch for dirt cheap. Awesome album. Awesome musician.
May the Indifference of Heaven come around to bless Warren Zevon.
I miss you x
i liked this - surprised me that i did - but, i liked it.
I hope you found what you were looking for Mr. Zevon. R.I.P.
Every time I look this song up, I add it to my favorites again, just to be absolutely positively sure it's on there.
