Under international law unless it’s marked by a salvage company it’s fair game. That’s how salvage rights work. If they want it back they can pay you for it but otherwise it’s yours.

@@DaniGirl a captain of a wreck is required according to coast guard regulations in US waters to file a salvage claim certificate if they are planning to salvage their craft. I that’s is not done after the wreck and they will place the buoy within 24 hours but I’ve never seen it take that long in costal waters, it more like 2. Failure to do so leaves it open to salvage. I’ve sailed on the great inland seas, the St. Lawrence, the Atlantic, and Caribbean, so I think I know a bit about this.

A drunk/drugged up driver always leaves the scene of the accident, that is the most plausible explanation for this. I lived on a sailboat in Hawaii for a period of time in the eighties and it was an absolute alcohol, drunk and drugged up girls, coke fest! lol! We had fun that was for sure! :).....luckily we never ran aground though, and had we would have snuck off that day/night but would have been back the next day to clean up what we could because they know who the owner is buy the registration# and others around the local marina would know who you were also anyway. Can't believe they just abandoned it for so many days? You had full salvage rights to the items and so does anyone else, including themselves if they would get their first. Your regular diving videos are hilarious and entertaining enough to not put “conspiracy” videos on your channel. Rather than just, handling it amongst yourselves and the community, offline.

You might want to brush up on the laws surrounding pollution and salvage in your city. Leaving the pile might technically make you liable for illegal dumping ie. "you touched it last." You could always just give the city a phone call and they'd likely be happy to send a crew out to take it, instead of just leaving it in a big mess for them to find later. Good work, though, love the idea of contributing any reward to the guys that cleaned up all day. Love you, man, keep it up.

Wow, you essentially stole something and ransomed it. Then justified it with some ancient sea law, which probably doesn't apply in general, or in US jurisdiction, or maybe municipal waters. You have taken from someone that may have lost everything with no evidence of their foul intentions. They maybe doing other things at 9am, dealing with authorities, dropping the kids off, working... Their job is probably not on the water and may not let them be there at that time. You can't justify your actions on them. Even If the law is on your side, what you did was motivaed buy anger and opportunity and was thoughtless.
