- If you happen to wonder what lies behind the great towering pipes then this video is for you. You can visit the inside of one of the largest organs of France located in Saint-Eustache church in Paris. You will find details of sumptuous case designed by architect Victor Baltard in 1854. The instrumental part was rebuilt in 1989 by the organ firm, Van den Heuvel.
J'ai eu le privilège de monter et de passer au milieu des tuyaux lors de journées du patrimoine. Nous n'étions que quatre et l'organiste qui nous a exoliqué le fonctionnement de ce fabuleux instrument. J'en garde encore, plus de dix ans après, un souvenir ému devant cette merveille.

Quando entro numa igreja e me ponho a apreciar a parte exterior dum órgão, fico impressionado com a sua imponência, com a arte que exibe; mas, quando ouço os seus sons maravilhosos, acontece algo em mim que não consigo explicar.
Vou tentar: tenho diante de mim um "monstro", terrivelmente complexo nas suas entranhas, capaz de emitir sons duma grande amplitude - ou não - todos eles magistralmente combinados, uns, suaves, outros, potentes, uns, doces, outros, assustadores, que tanto mexem connosco.
Contudo, este "monstro", apesar dos sons com que nos deleita, mantem-se totalmente calmo, não se agita, não esbraceja, não nos assusta; até parece querer ser nosso amigo, e, às vezes, conversar connosco em particular, no silêncio duma igreja calma e acolhedora.
Mas, ele é enorme, e poderia esmagar-nos com a potência do seus sons... Mas, não!
Mantém-se calmo, a confiar-nos as suas "histórias", até as de grandes batalhas, ou, também, de suaves brisas da Primavera.
Foi assim que, em Berlim, na Igreja de Santa Maria, eu deixei um amigo, aquele seu órgão belo, muito bem recuperado, numa tarde em que tive a sorte de participar num workshop, sob o tema da registração e sua exemplificação.
É verdade, passados muitos anos, recordo a nossa conversa ("You are an organist!

I am very impressed with the sound achieved by the Dutch firm, Van Den Heuvel. I have read that they have studied closely the tonal specifications of Cavaille-Coll, down to the most meticulous measurements, and it is really quite amazing the impressive sound they have developed while rebuilding these historic instruments. Bravo.

Very close in style to the American Classic organ; unlike, the typical French Cavaille-Coll. It is quite possibly the most beautiful and comprehensive instrument in Paris, and maybe all of France. The French certainly know how to demonstrate maximum capabilities fron any musical instrument.
M-M Durufle recorded one of her last performances in a return engagement, solo recital. (A recording worth owning if one can find it). In my more formal and professional years, I have grown to appreciate organs like these that can 'do it all' and are not limited in style and color possibilities. Five stars for this demonstration!

Not even close to American Classic. Listen more recordings of this organ, and you will absolutely hear the total difference.

We heard Thomas Ospital play in our local church (Lagrasse, Aude) a few years ago. He is the only organist we have heard there who could master the dynamic range of the instrument without overloading the ears of the audience, a mistake others make their all too often.

I heard the organ in 1974 while researching Vietnam history in Paris. The sound at that time as i recall was somewhat tinny, if that is a correct description. It was in any case a very big sound and seemed more up front than St. Sulpice, which I often visited.

My 'exposure' to the magnificent organ was when the Urker Mannenkoor Hallelujah zing held a program at the church (which cam be found on Nederland Zingt/Lichtstad met uw paarlen poorten, my favorite).
There were a couple of shots of the organ and from the loft. Later there was a program by the organist but in French I believe and I don't understand the language only with a few words.
Very good ENGLISH sub-titles; wonder how well Couperin, the Grand or Lully would sound, huh?

This is the only instrument I've laid eyes on which, not content with offering a choice of 32' pedal reeds along with a presumably open metal 32' Principale basse in the Pedal division, boasts another open metal rank (32' Montre) on the Grand-Orgue. I hadn't realised, when I walked in during an unplanned walk, just what the scale of the building was, and the "buffet" at the far end of the nave looked relatively normal in its proportions, albeit outstandingly easy on the eye. It was not until I took stock, having completed a few laps of the interior, that it dawned on me that what I had taken to be 16' Montre pipes were in fact the 32' ones, and the ones which looked like the 8 footers were of course 16'. At that stage, I still did not realise that they were *all* associated with a manual division - I suppose their scale was slightly on the slender side, but I don't recall noticing.
Actually I got curious and did some digging with Google, and I understated the case: there are actually THREE 32' reeds, with a ContreBasson on the Récit Expressif, so there are two manuals with 32' stops, and three such ranks on the Pedal. It's just as well the scale of the building is a match for such long-period waveforms!
Here's what the builder's website had to say about the specification:
The new organ has five manual divisions of 61 notes and a Pedal of 32 notes. The Specification is exceptionally rich. The Positif has 18 stops, the Grand-Orgue 16 stops, the Récit Expressif 17 stops, the Grand-Choeur 19 stops, the Solo 11 stops and the Pedal 20 stops, altogether 101 stops, 147 ranks and 8,000 pipes. Amongst the uncommon features of this organ, the following are particularly noticeable:
A grand Plein-Jeu based on the Montre 32' on the Grand-Orgue;
the harmonic series up to the ninth in 32' on the Pédale (Théorbe: 4 4/7' + 3 5/9') , in 16' on the Grand-Choeur and in 8' on the Solo (Harmoniques: 1 1/3' + 1 1/7' + 8/9'), and up to the seventh in 8' on the Positif;
A Plein-Jeu Harmonique 2-8 rank on the Grand-Choeur;
A battery of hooded Tubas on the Grand-Choeur;
A reed battery based on the 32' Contrebasson on the Récit Expressif;
Five ranks of chamade reeds on the solo winded on 6 (!) different wind pressures increasing from bass to treble.
Amongst the exceptional colours, the series of harmonic flutes (8', 4', 2 2/3', 2', 1 3/5', 1') on the Solo must be noted; this was introduced by Jean Guillou in the organs of "Chant dóiseau" in Bruxelles and of the Tonhalle in Zürich. Jean Guillou also had the idea to add a Sesquialtera to the Grand-Orgue in order to allow more soloistic possibilities to this manual.
The Contre-Bombarde 32' was not specified in the original contract but the Van den Heuvel brothers thought that the existing Contre-Trombone 32' (with its wooden resonators of relatively small scale) was not assertive enough for such a large instrument; so they gave this new stop to the City of Paris. Thus the organ of the Saint Eustache seems to be the only one in the world which has three independent 32' reed stops.
To which I can only add: Bravo! Excellence before profit ! ! ! Muchos kudos to the builders.
PS: I guessed wrong, at least partly, in my unresearched post: the "presumably open metal" 32' Principale basse in the Pedal division turns out to be "wood & metal". I don't know if it's open, closed or a mixture.

Was this organ first built by Cavaille-Coll? I just wondered, because I think this organ is exactly what a pipe organ SHOULD sound like. It's truly magnificent!! Thank you for the tour of the instrument.
It was built by Van De Heusel in the 1980s... so not a CC, although still my favourite organ in the world!
I read that, but it is interesting that it was built such a relatively short time ago. It has such a fabulous sound, I've always thought it might have been a CC which had possibly been rebuilt or enlarged by Van De Heusel with a new console installed. It's amazing, really! Thanks for getting me straightened out on that.
It is one of the largest in France... and certainly my fave. Incredibly rugged sound. Well worth looking up videos on other VdH organs... there are some good ones on here. I certainly share your enthusiasm!

in my opinion, CC organs have warmer sound, I prefer it over this one - not speaking about Notre-Dame, that's already not a CC but St. Sulpice or St. Ouen

What is the name of that little piston he is using to crescendo at the end? I have never seen that on an organ before. Looks extremely useful to just be able to hit one piston and get a steady crescendo!

Il est un mot que j’exècre : air. En facture d'Orgue, on dit toujours VENT . . . .

I believe this organ was built by a Dutch company. But it is a beauty and often used for concerts. "Their regular organist likes playing in an avant garde style which can be quite exciting, usually beginning about 5 minutes before the beginning of the main Mass on Sunday mornings. The choir there is also quite good compared to other churches in Paris.
I would enjoy playing a couple of pieces at the console of this grand instrument. La Nativité du Seigneur - Olivier Messiaen, and Litanies-Jean Alain. Yes, I could think of other music....

heureusement que Van den Heuven lui a donné le caractère que n'avait pas su lui donner Aristide Cavaillé-Coll dont les instruments ne sont fait que pour la musique du 19 ème siècle : Franck, Vierne, Boeldieu etc ...tandis que maintenant on peux tout y jouer

@@juliusobsequens9887 non.non! C etait Daublaine et Calinet. Ca devait etre leur plus gros instrument! Malheureusement un incendie en fin de chantier a detruit l instrument et provoquer la ruine de la maison. Ducroquet a repris les actifs et a repris le chantier. L orgue avait donc quand meme un coté romantique...sans cavaillé coll
Une telle orgue serait impossible à construire de nos jours ... Sa valeur est pratiquement inestimable..
Elle a été achevée en 1989 au prix de 5.000.000 euros.

Who originally built the organ?
from Wikipedia: With 8,000 pipes, the organ is the largest pipe organ in France, surpassing the organs of Saint Sulpice and Notre Dame de Paris. The organ originally constructed by P.-A. Ducroquet was powerful enough for the premiere of Hector Berlioz's titanic Te Deum to be performed at St-Eustache in 1855. It was later modified under the direction of Joseph Bonnet. The present organ of St. Eustache was designed by Jean-Louis Coignet under the direction of Titular Organist Jean Guillou and dates from 1989 when it was almost entirely rebuilt by Dutch firm Van Den Heuvel, retaining a few ranks of pipes from the former organ and the wooden case, which is original.
I don't know when the original organ was built. The church started construction in 1532. Construction took 105 years (!) The church was ransacked in the 1789 revolution. It was closed to Catholic worship in 1793 and used for a time as a barn(!); it was re-opened in 1795 with significant damage. The building was further damaged by a fire in 1844. Architect Victor Baltard directed a complete restoration of the building from 1846-1854, including the construction of the organ case, pulpit, and high altar and the repair of the church's paintings. The church was set afire during the rule of the Paris Commune in 1871, necessitating repairs to the attic, buttresses, and south facade.
Living as I do in a place where a cathedral damaged in an earthquake, which includes a magnificent instrument, has been left to take its chances with the weather, I have to admire the dogged persistence of the "fidèles" in Paris. I do hope the Notre-Dame de Paris is soon put to rights in the same spirit.
Dommage, ces jeunes sont super dans ce reportage mais je n aime pas cet orgue flamand qui sonne extra terrestre avec notamment un Tutti d anches glaciales et avec des basses de 16 et 32 faiblardes voir inaudibles, peu de profondeur, que de l agressivité et de l acidite bon j avoue c est amusant et unique toutes ces mutations colorées et baroques mais c est du gadget, je prefere largement un Cavaille Coll, facture française et meilleur qualite de jeux et de possibilité large de repertoire et donc de registration ! Cocorico ! J espère qu' un Jour, la maison de facture Cavaille coll reouvrira ses portes et sa boutique ! Si seulement...

une erreur, à la 9.28 minute le pied comme mesure ne fait pas 33 cm mais 0,3048 mètre. sinon belle vidéo.

This is not a remade organ, just made, and, as far as I know, was never meant to be a Cavaillé-Coll like instrument. It's more neo-classical then romantic.
On the contrary: The reception to the van den Heuvel organ at the St. Eustache was so great that the "Societé Académique d'Arts et Lettres" in Paris bestowed their "Médaille de Vermeïl" upon Jan L. van den Heuvel in 1991 for his contribution to the Art of French Organ Building. Perso je préfère la suavité du Cavaillé-Coll de La Grande Combe, qui nous vient de 1881 et a gardé tous ses registres d'origine.

pour avoir été titulaire de deux Cavaillé Coll je peux vous dire par expérience qu'ils ne sont bon qu'à jouer la musique du 19ème siècle , parfaite pour C Franck, Vierne,ou encore Boeldieu ou Lefebure Welly mais on obtiens rien de valable avec la musique française des 17 et 18 ème siècle ou même encore avec de la musique moderne comme Messien ou J Langlais pour ne citer qu'eux , les Cavaillé Coll sont des instruments sans vraiments de caractère, bon à jouer tout et rien

This organ-demonstration, which is really well done, shows an impressive, majestetic instrument, which is surrounded by , sorry , ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MUSIC.
Such music is certainly one of the reasons why there are lots of people who find an organ, especially a large and impressive church organ, to be scary or even terrible.
