Do I have a bulkhead door on my house? No. Do I think I'll ever need to learn how to replace one? Probably not. Did I enjoy watching the entire video anyway? HELL YEAH! lol Seriously, I enjoy your videos. Good work.
Don't you just love having EVERYTHING just right? Don't you just love DOING everything JUST RIGHT! TY so much for sharing your time, expertise, wisdom, humor....and I think 🤔....the slightest sound of your precious peep! Good to see you AGAIN! 👀 💕 🇺🇸
Well, I had to watch till the end, just to see the end result. And, as expected, it turned out awesome! I like the longer videos! Sorry it costs so much, but, it is an investment that was worth it!
This looks awesome! I like that you took the time to add lumber, address holes, gaps, and weather issues, and look forward to seeing it all painted. Onto the stairs next 👍
I love your videos. I’m a 68 year old woman who will never do any of these jobs but your videos are so interesting. You’re a perfectionist and your projects are done so well.
I knew we were headed to the basement!!! Great job on this. I loved how you payed attention to detail and sealed everything up tight. The addition of the 4x4 border pieces and pvc trim with the bevel really made a huge asthetic difference. Even filling in the little hole on the side under the lip of the house. You won't have to worry about rain or leaking.
This was really great!! I have never seen this kind of project done before. Your attention to detail is always so wonderful. Always clean, and you think of everything to avoid future issues. Great job! can’t wait to see the stairs project.
Looks very good. Now, no worrying about water getting in. I knew the oscillating tool would be making an appearance... it's your favorite tool after all. When I watch what you're doing and it matches what I was thinking I'd do, it seems like I'm finally learning. Thanks for the videos.
I never thought I would watch the whole video, but the way that you explained and demonstrated was fascinating and very realistic and informative. Thanks so much, it's a pleasure to watch someone who not only knows what they're doing but who also takes the necessary steps to do it right...I wish I could simply hire you to come deal with mine, but at least now I have a more accurate sense of the work involved and level of expertise needed!
This job came out beautifully. Not that I'll ever install one myself, but I learned so much! Loved all of the tips and each decision you made along the way. Great video!!
looking forward to the stairs. I'm really happy with the way you share your knowledge. it is so helpful to homeowners that don't want to have to pay someone for every project that needs to be done around the house.
When you said it might be overkill, I thought, no, that's perfection at it's finest. I love the attention to detail and how you make sure that nothing is half way done. I also love pvc wood (?) We redid our chimney with it and just knowing it's going to last a very long time and is bug proof makes you feel a whole lot better about your house.
@@TheFixerHomeRepair Thank you for being so down to Earth, and a great teacher. I like how you describe things so we can understand them. Ever since I subscribed to your channel, I have learned so very much. I have also made a lot of fixer friends. 😁 The Fixer community is an amazing group of people and I'm proud to be a part of the Fixer tribe. 😁🥰 I just had an idea. I would love to have a shirt or hoodie that had, *The Fixer Tribe*, on the back or sleeve of it. What do you and the Tribe think about it?❤️😁🥰
This guy went above and beyond what most professionals would even do with his level of thinking long term. At least I think he did, who knows? I don't even have a bulk head cellar door.
In case no one else mentioned it that was called a House Centipede. They eat tons of bugs including spiders. They are the top bug predator in a home. They are creepy as heck but are supposed to be good for the house. Nice work!
learning new things everyday. Love it when it is over engineered. I am using tons of LVL and stainless steel fasteners. I have the Ryobi oscillating saw, but I always use my Milwaukee M18 fuel or Festool Vecturo. The Ryobi oscillating saw doesn't nearly perform as good as they do. But it is time for me to revisit using Ryobi tools more often. It was cheap, and I don't care if it breaks.
Great video, really appreciate the step-by-step, down to the pre-drilling, type of bit, etc. So many videos skip those details which can make a project go bad very quickly.
Beautiful job! We need to do exactly the same thing and I so appreciate this in-depth tutorial. Not cheap, and labor intensive but about 1/3 the cost of having it done.
Just found this video. I have an old house with a rotted out wooden door. I'm planning to replace it now. I'm just Joe DIY guy so this was very nice to see. I guess I need to order a size close to my opening and just go for it.
Nice project. I am a bit surprised you actually didn't replace every stitch of old wood since you had everything removed off it. But if you are happy, what else matters. Thumbs Up!
Dang, that is good work. I love your end results. Quality workmanship and pride in your work. For stairs I'd give serious thought into poured concrete steps with a broom finish for grip. They won't rot and should last forever. I'm a red seal carpenter and love watching your work. Always good to see how others build things. Learning ideas from other smart builders.
Fixer that was some incredible professional grade work! That turned out beautifully! I like how you cut the boards so that they contoured perfectly to the concrete wall and would not let any water in! Great job!
You have great problem solving skills ! It is a pleasure to watch how you address and solve the many decisions involved in your tasks. Some of this can be learned but some of it is innate ability to think . Great job!
You did such a great job. Your video wasn't that long. I could watch you work for ages. I really like how you explain every process. And your work is quality, that's for sure. Please show it once you have painted it. Hello from Australia.
This brought back memories of my youth. That same door was used to replace the rotted wood doors on our basement in 1968. Bulkhead, haven’t heard that word used to describe basement doors since I left Mass. in 1970. Come to think of it, haven’t seen a bulkhead since then.
It looks great but I would have put some of that black sticky paper over the boards up against the house to cover the nails and also caulk the silver on the entryway. Just a suggestion especially if the black sticky paper is waterproof. Great video!!!
Another great video! Thank you. You're so good at explaining what you're doing and why, and your thought processes in decision making. It's all very interesting and informative!
I just watched your video on removing and building a deck and really appreciate your attention to detail with your videos, the fix and build involved and the written explanations because these projects seem easy till you get into them and things can go very wrong from there for the average home owner! I especially appreciate the attention on fixing the rotten siding, my siding looks about the same, it’s old and it’s some kind of vertical (only two exterior walls with vertical boards) melamine or cardboard crap that’s completely failed at this point and I’ve been stalling on what to do because ik it needs removed, the house where it’s rotten needs wrapped, etc etc but wasn’t confident if I knew all the steps so thank you so much and pls don’t stop filming your work!!!
Those concrete screws are so good. No messing about with them, I'm a DIY guy and my brother recommended them to me on a project. Great job - subbed (UK viewer)
This was a great tutorial! I actually do have to install these exact same doors, and on an old house with rotting supports and no sill! Learned a lot, you are so relaxed and patient, and show such attention to detail that it's a pleasure to watch as well as a great learning experience.
3:35 That's, Scutigera coleoptrata, A House Centipede, they are a semi-beneficial predatory metropolitan insect as they eat other insects and spiders, but don't mess too much with them as they can bite but rarely do (its about as painful as an ant/bee sting), you'll usually find them in damp areas like near drains, in bathrooms, and especially in underground areas like basements, bomb shelters, and bulkheads. They get in multiple ways, through cracks in foundations and concrete slabs, Tiny holes in baseboards and doors, as well as open spaces near sump pumps, also easy access points such as gas dryer exhausts or garbage shoots. You can even carry them into the house by accident on potted plants or firewood, wood especially being a good way to carry them in as they often time have multiple insect/spider eggs hiding in cracks.

Your work is so meticulous! I love that you even swept the sawdust! I do have to admit, when you first opened the door, I almost was expecting Clarice to pop out of there. (Silence of the Lambs) spooky. I live in NC and have never seen an entrance to a basement like this? Looks great! I can't believe how expensive the doors themselves were!. But "free labor", saved you just as much. And I don't like centipedes either. Amazing work!
The year 2073: "well, I guess it's time for me to replace this bulkhead that the previous owner installed in the early 2020's. It shouldn't take long to get this thing apart." ....... "I need help. Or maybe some dynamite. Nah, I'm just gonna leave it. This thing's pretty solid."
Nicely done and much care has been taken. I would suggest on the left hand side of the concrete wall would be better protected with a piece of pvc just like at the centre end, instead of the wood.

It’s a bit late to mention this but whenever reusing old wood you should flip it onto the other side because, that side has been less exposed to the elements meaning it’s more durable .
I probably would have slipped the flex seal under the paper and left the lower edge of the pvc un-caulked but it won't matter. Nice, thorough work. Great old house.
I love watching your videos, very informative & you take pride in your work. Thanks for sharing, esp like the planing you did on the wood to even up the boards. Another great video

Same here! Absolutely none of this was applicable in my life but I enjoyed it anyway.
I do, but then again, it doesn’t need fixing
Lol, do I have a bulkhead, no, but like you I enjoy watching his videos.
Same here...I don't even have a basement 😁
I got one that needs fixed! Come on over.

"Make everything you touch better than you found it" Love the thought process on this sir, we are definitely cut from the same cloth.
Black is what I thought would look good. You make it look easy but I know it wasn’t. Thank you again. Very helpful and entertaining ❤️
Well, I had to watch till the end, just to see the end result. And, as expected, it turned out awesome! I like the longer videos! Sorry it costs so much, but, it is an investment that was worth it!
Same here Carla. Don’t know why this Man isn’t at 250K? Great content and solid skill set in many areas.
I agree! Smaller investment now, rather than an expensive water damage repair later. 😉
True it cost more, but now he's improved the home's value.
This looks awesome! I like that you took the time to add lumber, address holes, gaps, and weather issues, and look forward to seeing it all painted.
Onto the stairs next 👍
Keep your videos long! I like how detailed you explain and show what you're doing! They are informative and show how to do the repairs!
Professional all th around. I like seeing pride and attention to detail videos. You won't need go back and fix it anytime soon.
Love your attention to detail. I watch your videos to relax before going to sleep. I love watching someone do a job well done.

I like long videos and watching ur channel reminds me that I use to watch this old house and shows like it back in the days
This was SO satisfying to watch! Hope you add footage of the bulkhead and trim all painted.
That was the 1st time I’ve seen that done since watching ‘This Old House’ on PBS back in the day. Cool video, TFS!
You are the type of person I wish I knew to help me with repairs.

Extremely helpful and comprehensive. Probably the best I’ve seen on these bilco repair/replacement videos. Helps that I have the same doors as well.
Nice project. I am a bit surprised you actually didn't replace every stitch of old wood since you had everything removed off it. But if you are happy, what else matters. Thumbs Up!
Great video! I love how meticulous you are about making sure everything is watertight all around……your camerawork and editing is awesome, too!
I agree! 👍🏼😊
Thank you, Susan!
Never fall in love with old electrical, plumbing and in this case, wood. Rip it out and start anew. Very well done under the circumstances.
It doesn't look very complicated, yet, your video was calm and stick my attention for the whole time. :)
This video was awesome! I know little about everything and a lot about nothing when it comes to construction. You be Billy Badass!
Watched to the end…a hundred times better!!

This was fascinating. I can't wait to see what you do with those basement stairs.
I think this was the first video I watched. Funny it was two years later you got to the steps and inter door, Really enjoy your video's.
Looks great dude!! You've done so much to the house I freaking love it

watching this, id have to say, good job, i wouldn't have done it any differently, you thought this through, good job.
I have a broken door like that, and finally someone showed me how to fix it...and fix it right, Thank you :)
Thank you for sharing everything .You work like a gentleman.Great Job 👍
Yes, dedication and determination is all you need !! By Joe, you did it.
Best teacher ever! Thanks for another great video, no matter how long.

wow! what a beautiful turnout! Awesome work mang.
Loved the jiffy seal, flashing part...where I live we pre prime all wood on all sides nowadays before installing...Great job.
Love the changes that were made to improve finished product. Built right and well thought out.

Nice job you can tell you take pride in your work.
New follower! You have a wonderful old house, and I love the care you put into it!
Thanks so much for subscribing! And for checking out my videos!!
Nicely done and much care has been taken. I would suggest on the left hand side of the concrete wall would be better protected with a piece of pvc just like at the centre end, instead of the wood.
Watching your uploads in completely the wrong order 😂
Started off with the stairs, then the internal door, now this.
Enjoy the content, just the right level of info and engagement.

Very pleasant to watch, you are so chill.

Love the longer video! Killer job, as always

Great Job. Your work is very clean and precise.

Beautiful install nice and seamless should look good for another 100 years good job.
I love watching your videos, very informative & you take pride in your work. Thanks for sharing, esp like the planing you did on the wood to even up the boards. Another great video
