Literally the best video on youtube! How has that concept not got more views? it's a brilliant idea. Woodworking is so expensive and it's great to see youtubers create cheap woodworking hacks

This is the best novel woodworking idea I've seen in ages, great concept in the first place and community contribution.

The two tenons, the manfully screwed connecting boards at the back, and the vise comprise a rough parallelogram. The cam pulls on the top tenon and pushes the bottom tenon backwards, forcing them apart so they press against the table top and the floor. Replace the two left-leaning boards at the back with one board angled to the right using dowel pivots, so the cam action pulls the tenons together. Install horizontal rails to prevent them closing and they will clamp onto them and enable the cam to bend the spring/vise. Well, it looks good on paper :)

Isn't it amazing, the power of collaboration? I noticed when you do use the metal bar, it racks the entire end of your workbench. Note to be careful with that. Great work!

Great vise/vice. All you need now is a good auto painter to paint some flames on the jaws!!!

If I'm not mistaken, the angled back braces (that keep the main tenon-bar and the floor bar parallel) shift as you clamp, 'locking' the two bars in place via friction with the floor and the upper table stretcher... but the downside to this is that it also lifts the table up slightly (as can be seen by the slight shadow-gap under the rear table leg @7:06, and by the ease with which the table gets pushed back in the intro when applying the cam-lever, plus around @7:40, when the pressure is released and the table drops slightly)
The same mechanism, but with the 'floor bar' running just above the bottom stretcher would probably give more clamping force, because there would be less vertical movement (the top and bottom stretchers cannot be as easily separated as the top stretcher and the floor)... but this would require cutting yet another hole in your table leg :D

You are right I does lift the bench at times. It would be better to have the bottom tenon over the stretcher, however the stretcher is bit high for it to work. I'm retro fitting this to my bench which is an issue. If I was to build a bench with the vice in mind it would easier. I would keep the stretcher on the floor.

something you could also do is add a second cam lock to the bottom of the vice. with it facing into the floor. this will hold the front face in place. could eliminate the need for a bar to go through one of the holes.

Hey see if you can put either some timber in a cross pattern over the legs or a solid sheet of ply over the end in such a way its not gonna effect the vices operation should prevent a lot of the racking we are seeing. Nice work 😉👍

These are GENIUS!!! I almost can't believe that these didn't exist before! I'll have to consider this for my nailed-together nicholson that I'm thinking of making!
That being said: why not have the handle go upwards instead of down? The lever will have to be shorter, so it'll have less leverage and will take a bit more elbow grease, but I imagine it would be better for the back. Less bending down, and you can put your weight on it to open and close it. I'll have to do my own experiments...
EDIT: other idea: Some kind of foot hook/pedal to make it possible to quick release/clamp it by foot. The lever could be even longer and reach to the floor, in that case. A possible trip hazard, but the thought of being able to kick a vise open AND closed appeals to me... What if the cam didn't have to spin perpendicular to the ground, but instead parallel, like an end cam? Then it could even have a sliding vise screw lever! So much potential! I need to do some small scale tests, I think.

Great idea to copy the f Clamp the only small change I would make is to turn the two diagonal pieces around. Because when you clamp it is causing the timber to go into tension
Instead, it should be in compression, in the long run, to have less stress on the screws and timber.
But if you are only looking to clamp small pieces I don't think should really affect it.

I've been thinking of something similar for some time now.
I never understood why not have the fulcrum where the screw/wedge/cam is usually located, then have a cam or wedge on the bottom. This would give much more power, with much less effort. Simple physics.
In my head I picture the cam lever on the bottom, but working toward the back, under the end of the bench and out of the way of tripping over it. Just reversing the locations of your pin board and cam, but cam is pushed toward back of bench and works backward from what you have, eg.. up is lose and down/perpendicular to chop is tight.
Just haven't worked out how to make it convenient to use yet. I guess some lever/arm extension arrangement to put the human interface in a better location than under the bench.
I'm currently building a bench based on Rex Kruger's Joiner Bench, and plan to attempt this.

My own thought is, you have now built in a racking motion into the vice. The force at the top of the vice jaws is far greater than at the bottom of the jaws, this on certain lengths will cause problems. I hope I am wrong, but it it is what I can see.

Hi John - loving your ingenuity with this design - thank you for sharing with the community. I would suggest adding a foot operated cam to bind the lower arm of the vise instead of the offset holes. Sent you an email with schematic. Hope it will help.

Oh by the way I'm building one, I'm not in the same position as you with a full sized shed, in fact I only have a garage that I share with 2 cars so I have a corner of the in house garage so I have to be a bit different with what I do but the eventual vice will operate in a similar manner, so it's thanks to you and UA-cam popping your vids up in my feed, I wouldn't be doing this🍻👍

  • @ElliotNesterman

I rather prefer the ratchet or engaged tooth version. But the floor wedges are a bit inconvenient.
Perhaps you can make a bottom rail which has teeth that engage in the opposite direction. When you lift the vise leg to disengage the upper teeth it could simultaneously disengage the lower teeth. Then when the leg was adjusted to the needed length dropping the leg would lever the upper bar to engage the upper teeth while dropping the lower bar to engage the opposing teeth. This would probably require a careful design of the dimensions, but should give really strong clamping.
    Just a notion.

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed

You could do that but i'm trying to keep it a simple as possible and retro fit my existing bench which is not ideal.

Hi John, a mightily impressive leg vise and extremely well explained. I have a question, would this set up work without the stretcher being so close to the top bar or is that a requirement? I’m building my bench at the moment and if the stretcher is required I can add it before I continue. Cracking series and thought process.

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  4 роки тому

It helps keep things stable, the weight of the leg vise is pushing down on the tenon arm so the stretcher keeps it level as it moves in and out. It might still work fixing both tenon arms together but I would put in the stretcher.
