    Everything the Mariner does is with purpose and geared toward survival. I love his way of life and how he pilots the Trimaran. I could watch a 1000 hour film about him diving, scavenging, and maintaining his Trimaran and, if need be, killing others who cause problems for him.

    The Mariner was such a enigmatic character. He isolates himself from society by sailing alone aimlessly across Waterworld as humans are prejudice against mutants. No wonder the people in The Atoll all freaked out and tried to kill when they discovered he was mutant and decided to execute him.

    Sorry I'm 3 years late to the party, just discovered your videos. As a fan of post apocalypse fiction.

    • @DWmaniac4n6
      @DWmaniac4n6 Рік тому

      @@TheAtoll I think that line marks a point where he realizes that that he has changed from someone who simply focused on lone survival to having some higher purpose. He actually has something he's willing to die for, and maybe he found love for his adopted family. John 15-13. Also when he turns down Helens offer if herself his explanation is something like "because you didn't want me, not really" I think that shows a longing for acceptance as well as empathy and morality that would be out of place in such a world. That event ties into the contrast of the desperate lust of the drifter that desires Enola and on the atoll they offer a woman to the mariner so that he may give them a replacement for the recently dead being recycled. This shows they are looking to preserve genetic diversity without which they say "the results of too much of that is undesirable" but the mariner turns the offer down "no one stays out that long and refuses a woman" one says suspiciously leading them to think he is a smoker spy, probably satusfied with the women of his own tribe. So when he said "she's my friend" it really means a lot. He has found a cause he is content dyeing for and that's worth living for more than survival itself. Yeah I know I overthink things but I think that that has influenced my thinking on real life events for me.

I've been researching this movie for ages and I've been a fan since I was little when I first saw. • @TheAtoll
      @TheAtoll 4 роки тому +3

      Hello Cedric! Thank you for this great comment, I love getting questions like this! To help answer your question, I believe that the gills are special effects makeup applied to the back of Kevin Costner's ears. Here is a quote from The Making of Waterworld book: "The filmmakers called on veteran special makeup effects artist Tom Burman who - along with his wife and longtime partner Bari Burman - was responsible for developing the various appliances used throughout the film. They began by developing the gills that would define the Mariner as the mutant creature so abhorred by the Atollers. Costner’s feet were similarly created, with Burman sculpting and casting webbed appliances that fit the actor precisely. Perez made soft acrylic spreaders that were placed between Costner’s toes to hold them gently apart, and a thin membrane of latex skin was applied from the top of his feet to the tips of his toes. The webbed feet required approximately forty minutes, per foot, to apply, and offered the realistic appearance Kevin Reynolds was looking for. The gills required a similar application time for each ear, while Costner’s straight makeup, applied daily by Perez, consumed a mere twenty minutes." So this gives some explanation, but how do they get the gill to move when he is breathing underwater for him and Helen, after the smokers kidnap Enola?? Well I might just have to create a video sometime in the future on all the visual effects makeup in Waterworld! Then I finally have an excuse to show the Deacon's nasty empty eye socket in a video!

      Hey Cedric, I just wanted to follow up here with something I just discovered. Or alternatively to the genetic memory theory.
    What if the Mariner is immortal? Or atleast far slower aging than normal humans?
    We're making assumptions that the Mariner's story about his parents was literal, where as he could have easily been adapting it to fit with the knowledge of that era.
    His father forcing him to dive for fish on a lead line. Could have been the research and tests done in the lab we see in the dream.
    His "mother" who was kind, could have been the other scientist we see in that frame. We cant really see their faces after all.
    Him killing his father and stealing his boat, could also be metaphor for killing him and escaping a research facility. He has become the thing his father sought to create, an adapted human strain capable of surviving on water world.
    But for himself. Not part of his father's plan.
    Many marine animals, especially marine mammals live far longer than land mammals outside captivity.
    This also goes to explain sime of the sea monsters. I mean within a mere 500 years?
    But if those mutations were intentional. It tracks that they could have further devolved generationally over time in the wild. But not the mariner, if he is infact the same person from the dream. And that dream was infact a memory.

      Yeah, that's a good point. I am not sure how resin is produced in Waterworld. What does the drifter say at the beginning of the film? Something like "the slavers are producing a good grade of epoxy these days. Cost you a hand full of dirt, or maybe that wind chime." I believe that this line is why the Mariner choses to go to the slave colony (or barter outpost depending on which version of the film your watching) at the end of the second act of the film.

    Hm, if he is a half mutant, that might actually mean he cannot mate with humans. I know, everyone is used to half/alien/magical beings and is less impressed with halfbreeds creating quarter beings. But this is more important. I came to this when people were talking about Dragon ball and how humans and Saiyans are obviously compatible. So are donkeys and horses. Or tiger and lions. The result also vary GREATLY depending on which species is the mother and father, in DBZ the mothers are humans. The male offspring however are always infertile, while ligresses and tigonesses and mule and hinney mares are often fertile with both parent species. Coming back to DBZ, Gohan a MALE hybrid of two MAMMAL species getting a human woman pregnant again is a sign that he is a halfbreed and not some infertile hybrid. I just realise I am comparing Son Gohan or Trunks to mules, but it is true. Think how wolves and dogs always create fertile hybrids, right, and nobody is concerned if the mother or father is a wolf. It just seems to be easier to get a male dog to hump a wolfbitch.
    So it could be the same with the mariner here. Maybe HE is infertile, but a potential sister wouldn't be. Maybe a child of a true male mutant would inherit different traits, possibly less. Remember how mules and hinneys much more resemble their horse or donkey mothers. With ligers and tigons I think they look more like their fathers.

    • @TheAtoll
      @TheAtoll Рік тому +3

      That's an interesting train of thought. I don't know much about DBZ or the interbreeding of mammal species, so I will just have to take your word for it!

    • @markusnashorn1145
      @markusnashorn1145 Рік тому +1

      It just happened to be DBZ where I noticed people talking about it and it hit me about mules and ligers. They have 4 or 5 half Saiyans by two male Saiyans, but only one quarter Saiyan that they don't mention. Offspring of two species means they are compatible. Not really.
      Could have been Star Trek, too. Sure Spock seems fine, but if he had kids with Vulcans or humans that would actually be a proof that they match. Or else Spock would just be an infertile mule, too. And if that is the case, than the kids the female Vulcan TPol had on Enterprise with a human man would be very different to Spock, like mules and hinneys. And that man turned out to be more human while Spock was more Vulcan, but they were raised around those different people, too.
      Belanna on Voyager had a Klingon mother and had a daughter with a human. Worf’s mate on TNG had a Klingon father and they had a son. This could mean they are compatible, except that in both cases we have FEMALES that should be fertile even if they are two different kind of hybrids. And Worf’s mate from a Klingon father looked way more like a Klingon than Belanna, though Belanna acted way more like one, even though BOTH were raised among humans.
      And only one of these kids is a boy and I don’t know if he had kids in canon. But male offspring of female mules/hinneys or ligresses/tigonesses are fertile usually. But of course every writer thinks that by showing one couple having kids, he is giving us a halfbreed like a wolfdog and not a mule.
      But for mammals the rule is male hybrids are ALWAYS infertile. I have met people who insist all female mules are, too, but I have read differently. Of course nobody would really try because the mule IS already what they want.
      The theory behind this is that female mammals have two of the same chromosomes. By that logic birds and reptiles and some fish too should produce infertile females since they have ZW chromosomes and males have ZZ. But I don’t know of any hybrids, and I don’t know much about the ZW chromosomes. Wiki says SOME of these animals. I really don't remember learning about this in school. But if the Mariner has some fish DNA, maybe he is fertile?
      So ironically, having EITHER Spock or TPol’s and Trip’s son have any kids with Romulan/Vulcan or human women would be a greater proof that those species are compatible than TWO half Klingon women having kids are. Otherwise you would call Spock a VulMan (And Tasha's DAUGHTER with a Romulan would be the same, since Romulans and Vulcans are the same species, seperated by 2000 years) and Tpol’s son a HumCan going how in cats you use the father first.
      Worf’s wife would be a KlingMan and Belanna a HumGon. The first case would be like a Ligress mating with a Lion to have a Li-Liger male, or a hinney mare mating with a horse. Belanna would be like a Tigoness mating with a tiger to have a Ti-Tigon female, or a mule mare mating with a donkey.
      Man, I wonder if I’m the first person to think of this and what the Trekfandom would think about it.
      But going back to the mariner, if he was a true mutant that could then mean that his daughters might be fertile, but his sons aren’t.
