There was only 2 weak points to the Spartans which was mostly based on the Spartan shield wall and those were the flanks and rear so they could only use it in enclosed surroundings like a mountainous passage such as the mentioned hot gates in this song which are seen in the movie 300 when they say “earthquake no captain battle formations “ followed by lay down your weapons then Leonidas saying Persians come and get them that environment was supposed to be the hot gates a very tough place to fight against a shield wall formation as you had to fight it head on not from the sides or rear which was almost impossible

The Persian army was made to fight maneuver battles on the wide open spaces of the Middle East, and thus consisted mainly of cavalry, and of infantry of a lighter, more maneuverable kind with frequent use of ranged weapons. The Greek citizen-hoplite phalanx was unwieldy and would have been hopelessly outmaneuvered on Persian home turf, but was unmatched by anything the Persians had for sheer, straight-up frontal grinding. Thermopylae was a particularly narrow chokepoint, but the entire terrain of Greece was hilly and full of similar battlefields where Persian maneuverability wouldn't count for much.
