I’ve been a horror fan for decades, and I’m hard-pressed to name a scene more terrifying than that one. Oddly, the two scariest scenes of the last ten years might both be tent scenes (Oddity and Backcountry).
Even though I expected the jump scare there, it still got me snd I screamed a very loud expletive. I said it's the best horror jump scare since The Descent.
@@andrewjoynes5867 💯 The best jump scares are those that are expected but terrifying nonetheless (it’s all about validating our fear!!). *The* classic example of this imho is the Winkie’s Diner scene in Mulholland Drive, especially since one needn’t watch the entire film to experience the jump effectively. Lynch hooks us with such a perfect setup that the payoff works with relatively minimal effort.
I just saw it in the theatre and really enjoyed it. One detail I love is that one character who recognizes how messed up everything is just leaves and doesn’t die in some stupid way. They just live because they were smart enough to leave and never come back.
I really enjoyed this movie. Could have done without the silliness at the end tho. Still, l thought this was supposed to be a non spoiler review? To me even mentioning that it has supernatural elements is kind of a spoiler, because the movie itself has you wondering for a good chunk of the movie if it's really something supernatural going on, or is it just in a character's mind.
Had a lot of fun seeing it in a theater. Best way I can describe the movie is it’s pretty much if Mike Flanagan directed a Conjuring movie on a much more limited budget.
That's such a good explanation. I was getting "The Haunting of Hill House" meets "The Conjuring," so I totally agree. And it was low budget, but the scares were still scary. At no point did I think, "That looked fake." They used their budget wisely. In reality, you don't need to have crazy special effects to make an effective ghost film.
Oddity TURNED 👏🏻 IT 👏🏻 OUT 👏🏻! I loved it and I was covering my eyes and ears… it’s been a long time since I’ve felt that way in a theater while watching a movie. The opening scene reminded me of the opening scene of Urban Legend! So tense and I had no idea what was gonna happen. The main actress was so powerful too!
I saw it and I have to say that you NAILED this review. There are definitely parts where people laughed, but it wasn't a comedy. It's kind of difficult to explain until you see it. I think it's because the writing is just very clever. And, same, the ending shot literally made me smile. I'll also back up your guarantee. If at least one of those jump scares doesn't get you, something is wrong. LOL The funniest part is that I KNEW it was coming. It was so obvious what was going to happen, and I still jumped. I think Mike Flanagan would sing this one's praises. (If he hasn't already.)

I wish Darcy hadn’t passed because the character was so intriguing and I’d love to know more about her creepy shop of cursed things. Definitely have to keep my eyes on Carolyn Bracken & Damian Mc Carthy for their other projects. That tent scene?! 10/10!
I've been really enjoying Shudder movies lately. Usually i don't care for supernatural horror but this one felt intelligent and the director really understood how to scare the audience - when to scare you and when to get rid of the tension.

'Oddity' has just been acquired by a distributor here in Ireland and will be released in theatres on 30th August. Wouldn't be surprised if it also gets a second distribution in the US later this year, probably in the fall.
@aaronmichael1201 It hasn't received much publicity at all over here yet (I only found out about it through American reviews). Presumably because Ireland is a small country and the resources needed to market a movie on a large scale just aren't available. Fortunately it's drawn plenty of interest from abroad and will get the attention it deserves, which is surely a credit to the quality of the film itself.
This movie scared me more than Longlegs and I really enjoyed it like it needs more attention and love bc it’s so damn good. The reveal I didn’t expect (I guessed one part of the twist like who it was but the person truly responsible caught me off guard). That wooden man scared tf out of me and I kept looking away when it was on screen. 8.5/10 it was just so good and truly did scare me a lot with some pretty effective jumpscares.
As I was leaving the theater IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, an "employee only" door opened behind me and I literally jumped off the sidewalk. Definitely got under my skin!
You’re so right about having to look away!! I hated looking at that thing and made myself look away when I caught myself doing that, and man! I could tell I got creeped out

This is probably my favorite horror of the year. It's scary but also very funny and just so entertaining. Also, you mentioning how the last scene made you smile made me feel so good. I had the biggest grin on my face in that final shot. So good.
I think showtimes are so limited because Deadpool and Wolverine dropped this week, screens are dedicated to that and Despicable Me/Inside Out 2 for the kiddos 😭

I literally SCREAMED at the biggest jump scare and hit the button on my recliner which freaked me out even more 🙈 I was so lucky my theater had it for a week and I got a chance to see it. I don't think I would have had as much focus watching at home
Friggin’ Deadpool and Wolverine took over ALL the theaters around me and there isn’t a single showing in a theater within 50 miles of me. I keep hearing great things about this. Super bummed that I missed it
Saw this and really enjoyed this surprisingly good chiller. However, set a horror film in Ireland and I am immediately creeped out. I don’t what it is but if you set a film in Ireland my back immediately gets chills up it!
I just finished watching this movie and I’m glad I listened to you when this video first popped up for me and stopped watching the video cause I 1000% agree it’s better to not know anything. I didn’t watch trailers or anything. It was fantastic, I loved it. So simple, so effective!
I watched this as a part of the fantasy Filmfest nights in April and it was definitely one of the most memorable of the bunch. The jump scares literally made me jump, hadn’t had this in years! What a fun watch. I recommend it to everyone who’s a fan of horror.
Genuinely scary movie. I have been frustrated this year with only a few really scary horrors, but this one is outstanding and I agree with you about going in cold. It just has moments where there is just a sense of dread. It is not easy to create that. This is likely to be overshadowed by over-hyped trope-milkshake that is Longlegs, when this movie is ACTUALLY unsettling and well made. The Irish seem to be very good at horror movies!
I'm bummed that my local theater had "Oddity" opening week, but it only showed at 10pm. I waited a week to see if it would expand to more showings, but it left the theater after a week. I will be checking it out soon on Shudder. I also plan to see "Caveat" before that, since it's also on Shudder.
I made a day of it recently and saw this along with Longlegs at the theater. Time well spent. The minimal number of locations along with small cast really made this story feel focused and helped build the sense of dread throughout. It felt like a step up from Caveat which was still a good movie. My only criticism is I wanted to see the outcome played out differently. The final shot was foreshadowed but that is a minor quibble.
I moderately enjoyed this movie, but I was thinking about how on earth Darcy drove to the house for longer than I want to admit 😭I was pretty impressed by the jumpscares and sound effects though.
I went to see longlegs, was disappointed. Stuck around and bought a ticket for oddity. It was way better. Would be great to watch alone at home in the dark. Nice small film but so scary. Some good eerie moments a la the haunting of hill house
How was everyone so unfazed by the wooden doll sitting at the table the whole time? It's just beyond me how no one went like "what the f..?" the minute they stumble upon it
I just checked my theater and it’s got one showing. So I’m going tonight at 10:55pm lol. I saw the preview already somewhere so I was excited when I saw your review. Let’s gooo!
definitely love oddity, it's scary ! i saw longlegs twice, and then i saw oddity, so happy i got to see it in theater because it was definitely limited , it was in my regular theater which is very close to me, but only in the smaller auditorium, and only like one showing time each of very few days
I watched your Longlegs review and it got me into the theatre to watch it last weekend. Definitely glad I went, though I’m not as into it as you are. I was casually checking showings today for this weekend and saw the poster for this movie but no showtimes are listed! Ugh. Now seeing your review about it makes me double ugh that there’s no showtimes for it!
Oh my goshhhhhhh, see this in theaters, I drove an hour and 9 minutes and just may do it again tomorrow. It’s worth the drive! I met some fun theatre mates, Anya and Tom or John, I forget which one now that I must recall…. SIMPLY A PLEASUREFEST OF HORROR. The tension was so well balanced with payout and just really loved this one 😌
Scared the crap out of me! Creepy, spooky, and genuinely unsettling, great acting and storytelling too. Carolyn Bracken is outstanding, highly recommended, and worth seeing in a theater!
I loved this film as well. I agree with you on the undertone of humor. Some of the scenes and the end shot gave me some Pet Semetery vibes in that it is horrific visuals with a touch of levity.
I really liked it however I thought we’ll see more of the wooden thingy. I don’t mind a slow burn as long as there’s something to look forward to but with this, I felt like something was lacking a little bit. But definitely enjoyable!
Can't wait to see this. Liked Caveat a lot. Sadly it didn't play anywhere around me. What a great time for horror though. This, Longlegs, Cuckoo, Alien Romulus, Trap, just so much great stuff within a couple of months.
I'd been really wanting to see this as well as Longlegs. This wasn't out yet & I was so sure I'd love Longlegs I talked my husband into going which broke our decade long streak of actually going to a theater. The surprise was that I really didn't care much for it? My husband hated it tbh. Lol. So I really pray this one is better. 🙏
I had to drive across town to the mall I hadn't gone to in ages to see it, only 2 showtimes, but I'm sure glad I did see it in a dark theater with, like, 4 other people.
yes you can call this limited😭 came back to this vid after 3 months bc i finally had the chance to see it. I live in the netherlands and it didn’t play in any theatre in the country plus shudder is not available here. I got lucky with finding out it played ONCE on halloween (literally just came back) in an independent local theatre, and it sold out pretty quickly. So happy i got to see it on the big screen!
I saw it on a whim a couple weeks ago because it was showing at a theater by me! I didn't know anything about it and was so pleasantly surprised. It definitely scared me too
01:40 and I stopped bec. in Vienna the release is later this month. I promise to come back to have your opinion. Great taste combined with obviously great leadership here!
I agree, the jump scares being preceeded by dread really just made them hit harder. They were still scary af even when you could see some of them coming.
Just watched Twisters in theatre since it's only come out now in Italy. Didn't like it honestly. Can't "beat" the original. *I CANNOT WAIT* for this one instead oh dear!
I watched it because I liked Caveat and it is really creepy I really enjoyed it and yes its scary. The ending was very satisfying as well, she knew he would ring it. A great insurance. She was prepared to all ends, she really is a soldier salute for that. And how evil is the man he inserted a hint of self doubt in the poor lady which ultimately caused her to fall but was it him or simply she paid for an innocent !! Anyways really recommend it.
This movie was really good, but not horrifying at all. Felt like a Goosebumps story but rated R. The acting was very lackluster but I think that is a fault of the dialogue and lack of action. The atmosphere is the strongest aspect in my opinion.
i feel like longlegs was actually more predictable whereas this one was well crafted imo. i also like how both had small cast but the use of the space was lacking when it came to the estate in oddity. i wish we would’ve seen more of it
Started watching this review 2mo ago.. and stopped as soon as u said to stop lol! And now I’m back.. cause as u said, it now available 2mo later on Shudder… totally agree .. I’m so mad I couldn’t catch it in the theaters! Given that longless, cuckoo, and this one pretty much came out really closed to each other… this one I think is the best. Just the absolute dread that this movie conveys! Masterclass!
My wife & I watched this last night on a laptop in the dark, & i literally jumped/half-fell off the couch during the tent scene even though i knew it was coming, the slow-burn tension leading up to action hit hard in multiple scenes
This movie gave me the creeps! 😂😂😂 I loved the pacing and the story telling. So very well shot..they show what you need to see that you know is going to scare you and also subvert the scares, expectation wise (in a good way).
Well tonight, I finally got around to watching this movie. My atmosphere was at night with all of my lights out in my apartment and alone now I watch a lot of horror movies usually I am not freaked out, scared on edge. But the jump scares in this movie creeped me out have to say that was very well done. I love the setting the uniqueness of the house, the atmosphere, The sister and all her strange, psychic powers that was definitely a cool element. Overall, I really enjoyed the movie some of the stuff I wish they would’ve explained a little bit more like I found myself saying why didn’t they elaborate more on that particular scene I thought the ending could have been a little better. but overall, I would recommend it to her fan definitely for the jump scares and the creepy elements. I have to say I avoided all spoilers in this movie so I knew nothing about it when I started and press play I don’t know how long it’s been going on now for him, but I stopped watching trailers and if there’s a new horror movie out, I just go in absolutely blind and I have to say sometimes it works out very well other times I thought if I would. Not have watched that. Anyway I’m happy I got to see it.
My girlfriend & I just saw it this evening at AMC in Pittsburgh. I typically laugh at her reaction to jump scares, but this one got me good! LOL. I was surprised at how scared I got when the girlfriend was playing with the camera in the bed. So glad we got to experience it on the big screen. Thanks for doing such an excellent review. 😎😎
Completely agreed with this. I saw this the same week as I saw Longlegs - and while I liked Longlegs more overall, the tension and suspense of Oddity was CRAZY to me. I don’t get freaked out easily, and legitimately I was so on the edge of my seat and creeped out the whole time.
Managed to find it at a theater near me because of this review! It was only showing at 10 o'clock at night and only for two more days, but when Sarah tells you to go see a movie, you go see that movie no matter what it takes. No notes. Perfect movie. 10/10.

I have one showing close to me tonight and I am definitely going!
I really enjoyed this review. You piqued my curiosity.
I may have to drive 2 hours to see this one.
Longlegs needed an ending like this 🙄
I really liked it however I thought we’ll see more of the wooden thingy.
I saw this in a theater. Loved it. This movie actually scared me.
I’d love to see you do a review on the movie stop motion that is relatively new!
It’s playing at regal cinema in Aliso Viejo, CA, if anyone in that area is looking for it.
yes you can call this limited😭 came back to this vid after 3 months bc i finally had the chance to see it. I live in the netherlands and it didn’t play in any theatre in the country plus shudder is not available here. I got lucky with finding out it played ONCE on halloween (literally just came back) in an independent local theatre, and it sold out pretty quickly. So happy i got to see it on the big screen!
Watched in my home theatre. Jump scares were on point. Plot actually interesting. Sound design was brilliant.
I saw it on a whim a couple weeks ago because it was showing at a theater by me! I didn't know anything about it and was so pleasantly surprised. It definitely scared me too
Eagerly waiting for this one and Longlegs to come to Berlin!
This movie was really good, but it did not for one second scare me at all. I think I'm numb to horror now
This movie has ONE showtime near me and it's 8:15AM tomorrow morning 😭
01:40 and I stopped bec.
in Vienna the release is later this month. I promise to come back to have your opinion. Great taste combined with obviously great leadership here!
I agree, the jump scares being preceeded by dread really just made them hit harder. They were still scary af even when you could see some of them coming.
id never heard of this movie, i cant wait for it to go out to streaming because unfortunately it wont be released in my country 😢
I enjoyed this movie! Looking forward to watching Cuckoo next!
Just watched Twisters in theatre since it's only come out now in Italy.
Didn't like it honestly. Can't "beat" the original.
*I CANNOT WAIT* for this one instead oh dear!
I’ve seen Longlegs and I didn’t think it was scary or horrifying. Anyone else? Honest opinions please😊
It is such a great movie! I hadnt even heard of the movie until we got our tickets. Awesome video!
It didn't come to my area. Thanks for your review!
I thought Longlegs was a better movie but oddity was creepier because of the jump scares. All subjective.
I agree! Longlegs was the better film but Oddity was definitely scarier to me
i feel like longlegs was actually more predictable whereas this one was well crafted imo. i also like how both had small cast but the use of the space was lacking when it came to the estate in oddity. i wish we would’ve seen more of it
Started watching this review 2mo ago.. and stopped as soon as u said to stop lol!
There’s one showing at one theater near me! Showing into next week so I might have time to go!
Yes! I’m pretty seasoned but the scares got me. I had to leave my lamp on, ha! I loved this. His first movie Caveat was good too.
My wife & I watched this last night on a laptop in the dark, & i literally jumped/half-fell off the couch during the tent scene even though i knew it was coming, the slow-burn tension leading up to action hit hard in multiple scenes
I love your shirt
Anyway I’m happy I got to see it.
the opening scene of longlegs was the only part that conjured any fear for me but im excited to check this one out!
Just watched it. Awesome movie. You are correct that even a seasoned horror fan will get scared. Great storytelling . The final scene was gratifying
Completely agreed with this. I saw this the same week as I saw Longlegs - and while I liked Longlegs more overall, the tension and suspense of Oddity was CRAZY to me. I don’t get freaked out easily, and legitimately I was so on the edge of my seat and creeped out the whole time.
Thankfully saw it at one random amc late night! I did like it!!
Managed to find it at a theater near me because of this review! It was only showing at 10 o'clock at night and only for two more days, but when Sarah tells you to go see a movie, you go see that movie no matter what it takes. No notes. Perfect movie. 10/10.
