I am an art student in England at the age of 54 and I just want to send my appreciation for your channel. In one video alone - producing Zines in InDesign I have begun to fly - I was doing a layout last night at 1am! My modules are Graphic Arts and Photography and coming to these subjects as a complete rookie yet with bags of interest and enthusiasm., ( I hadn't even picked up a DSLR 2 weeks ago or understood what InDesign was when I started ) your channel is giving me so much already from just the couple I have seen so far. Brilliant and thank you. It's Sunday here and I feel a binge watch coming on. I got diagnosed on the Autistic Spectrum in November - which explains an awful lot and finding someone who can communicate their passion and knowledge in the way you do - it's like you are in my room and we are just having a conversation - no squeaky voices, bells and whistles - just great teaching.
This video is very helpful. The advice carries over to how we judge people as well. Deciding that they are right or wrong without fully understanding what they mean.
Yes! I couldn’t agree more, and use much of this language to teach my students in ministry exactly that. There is meaning and intentionality in people more so than even in words. It’s important that we are quick to listen and slow to speak to excavate and understand that meaning before ever coming to conclusions. Thank you for your comment!! Thank you for this. It is refreshing to hear the history of art and photography introduced into the discussion. Too often photography is portrayed superficially with rules, techniques, and tips. These can be useful, of course, but seen alone is a shallow approach that wil likely produce uninspired images. I just today discovered your channel and look forward to more.
I spent a whole day viewing one wall in Mark Rothko's Chapel in Houston, Texas. It was a very spiritual experience. I felt like I was literally transported inside the painting. Very unusual emotions were also experienced. This series is very important and off with a splendid start.
Ah man, I nearly brought up the Rothko chapel in this video! I haven’t been but want to go so bad. I remember the first time I came across a Rothko piece. It was at the Milwaukee Art Museum and I just sat there in awe for 20 minutes or so. As I was walking around the museum I couldn’t help but make a circuit back around to see the piece over and over. His work has an element that reaches to the depths of the soul. Quite incredible. Thank you for sharing your experience!!
I was introduced to Bruce Gilden by watching Eric Kim's UA-cam videos. I was intrigued by the way he shot. Many of my peers didn't care for it but I kept digging and I kept watching UA-cam videos on Gilden. Eventually I came across interviews and learned and understood his thought process and it finally all made sense. Moving on to the artist you said you will talk about in another video, I've heard something about him. I think after looking at that painting for hours he quit his job and went to work with the mentally ill, if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, nice video and I'm looking forward to more. 🙏✌️

His name is Henri Nouwen, he was a Catholic Priest and left his teaching at Harvard divinity school to go work with the mentally ill at L’Arche in Canada. His book the Return of the Prodigal Son brilliantly describes his journey of healing and growth through reflections on Rembrandt’s painting and the parable itself. Incredible to see how artwork can so profoundly impact a persons life! Thanks for your adding to the conversation!

I'm new on this channel and I really enjoyed this topic. It gave me something to think about, and I will certainly reflect on this and discuss opinions on this topic with friends and family. I believe a lot of this is about taking our times to allow ourselves to impress and be touched instead of bombarding with expressions and opinions. Being conscious about this definitely makes art and life a little more enjoyable.
Hey Marlon! Welcome to the channel and community! I couldn’t agree more. Our willingness to be spoken to and impacted rather than do all the speaking is so so crucial here. I was in a conversation with someone else in the community this morning and we were discussing the fact that this transcends art itself. How self absorbed are we as a whole? We are quick to demand others listen to us, but slow to listen ourselves. As we become more compassionate and empathetic individuals we will naturally move in the direction of hearing and understanding rather than asserting and demanding. If all of that makes sense.
I have a couple of thoughts about this. First, the Extrinsic factors are very much in line with Dewey's ideas about learning. Deep learning is based on personal experience and engagement with what you are learning. All learning is social in nature and is only meaningful when it grows in a social environment. You learn best when you are creating in a community with other practitioners. The second thought is about how demagogues will try to control the Intrinsic factors to actually short-circuit people from really understanding an issue. When their opponent makes a point or explains a position on an issue, the demagogue will immediately attack the worth of the idea, not allowing understanding or interpretation to happen. The last thing they want is for their followers to actually make their own decisions and fully understand an issue. So, they control the process by short-circuiting it. This happens quite often with art. If a demagogue can find a feature in an artwork that they can attack (often nudity or religious elements), the audience will not be able to develop their own understanding or appreciation for what the artist was trying to do. Your video is very thought-provoking. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Alan!! Instagram certainly does not carry the weight of visual study as a photobook, but how great is it that it does give us maybe an in depth look at photographers we admire (At least contemporary photographers) and the way they live their lives, interact with others, and present their perspectives. It helps a great deal to unlock their works all the more. I hope that in my sharing of my videos, my thoughts on instagram, that when someone sits down to spend time in one of my photobooks it has helped them to understand and connect with the artwork all the more. @@NickExposed yeah that's a good point actually, I guess Insta can reveal the artist as a person a little more, or at least a different version of them than we get in a polished body of work. Some of my favourite artists on Instagram are probably ones that offer a peak behind the curtain on their process, as opposed to a mere presentation of their images. Enjoyed the videos this week, thank you! I have really been trying to stop and read, watch, look, learn from others over the past year or so in my photography. I have also been trying to have more dialog in our community and look forward to more of these videos and to see how we can have more "live discussions" to learn more from an appreciation of art and craft and how to make.
That’s the hope at least. I’m trying to be very mindful to not make the promises of consistent new videos and such. With the season we’re in and how much my duties in work can fluctuate I am never certain when I will have the time to do these. But yes I desire to have more conversations like this, and hope to formulate them in videos.
