Brendan Gleeson's portrayal of Collin's is possibly the most accurate put to film. I think he captures the youthfulness of Collin's a lot more readily than the likes of Liam Neeson. Well done Brendan 👏

I'm rather surprised by your criticism of Michael Collins, 1996. Having studied, and lectured on the subject, (MC) for more years than I care to recall, I was truly impressed with the film. That said, I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Treaty' and that of Brendan Gleeson's magnificent thespian qualities.

Thank you for posting this RTÉ BBC production. I am a non-Catholic U.S. citizen with German rather than Irish heritage. I was first introduced to "The Troubles" in middle school when I read Liam O'Flaherty's short story, The Sniper, which takes place during the civil war which followed in the aftermath of the passage of the Treaty. Further research at the time led me to stories of the Easter Rising and the actions at the GPO, The Four Courts and others. These stories filled the mind of a boy who had never set foot in Ireland. Looking back, it is worth noting just how powerful a single, well-written story can be to any one individual. I have since enjoyed learning of the biographies of the leaders of the Rising, primarily through the fairly recent Irish productions released for the 100th anniversary. Although I have been to Europe on many occasions, I have yet to visit Ireland. When I do, you can be sure that much of my visit will be retracing the steps of Ireland's founders.

A brilliantly made drama on the Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations. I saw it when it first came out in 1991. Agree Brendan Gleeson was excellent (the best Michael Collins) in my opinion. But the other cast members were also excellent. Ian Bannen as Lloyd George, Tony Doyle as Griffith and Barry McGovern as Dev. It puts Neil Jordan's Hollywood fantasy 'Michael Collins' in the shade!!!

History is very hard to recreate faithfully in film; the directors narrative vision almost always involves the liberal use of artistic licence in the form of story editing and composite characters. Michael Collins close confidant Harry Boland died of gunshot wounds in his hospital bed as opposed to Neil Jordan's version in the Michal Collins movie.

If Collins had lived, there'd be no Northern Ireland today. It would have been folded back into the south because Collins was making plans before his death to use the new Free State as a base to strike into the north, and that's when it would have REALLY got ugly. Collins was the John Lennon of Irish political history - the fact that he died so young is what made him a legend. If he'd got any older, the music he made would not have been so sweet.

Gleeson's performance was excellent as Michael Collins but Liam Neeson was almost perfect because he was actually as tall as Michael at over 6 foot. Can't believe it's his 100th anniversary today. What he did for Ireland was incredible, he was way a head of his time. England was going to send a quarter of a million troops into Ireland and after fighting a world war with Germany, they would've destroyed us in a few weeks and Michael knew this.

Collins and Griffith obtained the best possible terms only to be criticised and derided on their return. As for Dev, a clever but impractical man who became an icon for his people, but never achieved the Irish unity he claimed to be paramount. In life and on film he seems to dominate Collins, but he must have led a very sad life having achieved nothing further for Ireland. IMHO.

Collins is a fascinating figure. One of the greatest leaders Ireland ever produced. Today’s ‘leaders’ of all political complexions are pygmies in comparison. They don’t make them like Collins any more.
Having studied his final hours in west cork in august ‘22 I am inclined to believe Collins made it too easy for them to get him. That begs the question why.
Why did he drive into enemy territory & why when ambushed did he order the convoy to stop & fight it out. Something no trained soldier would do. Military training says you would either drive on at speed or turn back.
It looks likely that he was shot by Sonny O’Neill a former British Army sniper. How convenient that he was in the right spot at the right time.
Did Collins have a death wish? Did he want out of it all? Was he so enraged with the behaviour of the anti-treaty forces that he just snapped? We may never know.
One thing is clear his death conveniently paved the way for DeValera & ensured Ireland remained partitioned for the next 100 years. Dev made no attempt to end partition in spite of all his bluster.

Although I am not a native born Irishman, I have visited my father's family in County Mayo and spent some.months living there, learning first hand about both my family's and Irish ;history and literature, I am not arrogant enough to think that I am the only person who is entitled to speak for.all the Irish people! But I have also spent 11 years teaching Ebmnglish in Germany, since German is my actual fluent second language, not Irish. So.my background is multi--cultural at best, and not exclusively Irish, but I have a special spot in my heart for the Irish, so I became an imperfect Irishman in spirit.and also in nationality. I also spent time in Sweden and found much in that country that I also admired and still love, yet I did not become a Swedish citizen, so my preference is still Irish. None of this makes me a "Plastic Paddy," however, because I still feel, think, and am happy to identify as b eff ing Irish 365 days a year, and not only on March 17th, St. PATRICK'S DAY, as do many Irish Americans who are sometimes "Stage Irish," who only appear to as ct Irish (whatever that sad character might be,) but keep my feelings close to the best, and refuse to indulge in the sad, stereotype Irishman.many Americans like to pathetically mimic by putting on a fake Irish accent and then drink themselves into a blind stupor! I also don't normally allow myself to get embroiled in Brit bashing or lambasting the English for past transgressions, because I have no desire to rekindle past hatreds that need badly to die out so that we can see ourselves and future generations living together in peace and enlightened understanding of the good things we can appreciate and enjoy about each other's culture, language, and humor. Just as my friends in Germany have taught me for many years, hate and fear are corrosive to the common human spirit, and can inevitably destroy us from within! We all need to choose to celibrate what brings us together in harmony and in ssd one degree of happiness, and not forget everything but the grudges, as some smart ass people often accuse us of doing! I .try
hard to fit in wherever I live, and enjoy the company of my fellow humans, without polluting my mind or my personality with past prejudices toward any different ethnic groups, but to look for the good in all, even though we all have our internal preferences.

Upon arriving they were asked to wait in the sitting room, after a while Michael Collins, dressed in women's clothes entered the room. they were then asked to escort him through the roadblocks then in place. Ironically they were whistled at and catcalled by the soldiers while doing so.

@Saints and Scholars The second story was regarding an injured colleague of Mr Collin's circle. This gentleman was shot by the British Army and was incarcerated in a semi secure ward in Hospital. Michael Collins along with several other people dressed as either Doctors or Nurses (Granny included), walked into the secure area and informed that the patient was to go to the operating room. After persuasion, the guards allowed the injured party to be wheeled to the operating room. Upon entry Michael Collins told the security detail that, as they were not clean enough to enter a clinical environment they should remain outside. Once inside, the patient and everyone else involved walked out a second door, and freedom! Sorry these are not the most amazing stories but it's the only stories my Granny ever told us when we where kids.
