Absolutely. Solid themes with strong melodies and progressive harmonies, simple but very effective orchestration, majestically barbaric horns. Sounds somewhat familiar (Handel and Grieg influences) and yet at the same time very original. Glenn's later (WC3 etc) gameplay music maaaay be more sophisticated in orchestration (although it depends), but otherwise is much more timid and maybe more ordinary. There is a gigantic heap of game music like in WC3/WoW out there, but there is no other music like in WC2.
@@NotEnoughPrana You can still hear music like this in old WoW. I always thought the Ironforge theme was made in the WC2 style. Argent Tournament reminds me of it too. Strangely, the Highmountain music is quite similar to this. I didn't expect the style to return there.
@@Cyberdemon1542 Gave Ironforge a listen. Alas, tis but a mere shadow of a shadow of what was written for WC2. Also some motives are taken directly from WC2, that's kinda... sad. Did not understand Argent Tournament reference, it's just some generic ye olde celtic music with slight Basil Poledouris (Conan) influence, or maybe you meant some specific track?

As for Argent Tournament,I guess it's because Argent Tournament actually sounds medieval, or at least like something that reminds of medieval music. I don't know what modern WOW music really sounds like. It's mostly just generic epic music. I miss when Warcraft had grit and felt realistic. It was never realistic but it FELT realistic and this gritty, brutal music helped convey that feeling up until Classic WoW and even some parts of BC and WOTLK. Don't get me wrong, I love that colorful high fantasy feel modern wow has but I think it's time for a counterpoint. I want armor to look like armor again, the humans to be kind of assholes again without being evil and for music to sound like this again.

Jump to 4.56, those pizzicato fills with choir chord are from WC2, can't remember which tune exactly. A bit later when the low string/bassoon combo resolves a fourth up at 5.16 and plays f - f - g - Bb - g - f in octaves, that's straight the beginning of the Orcs 03 theme (not present in this playlist, sadly) but slowed down. Some other small moments I'm too lazy to revisit now. I'm really regretting now I never got to play WoW classic in its golden age (and any other version really), but I know what you mean about "realistic and gritty", Lineage 2 and Aion went through the same process with their updates.
Listening to this make me realise how GOOD the original music actually is, since part of this orchestra actually sounds a lot like the original. It is really hard to program general midi och make it sound almost like an orchestra.
hello good sir, first off I'm really REALLY happy you managed to record WC2 again it's glory, I'm part of a team that is currently remaking WC2 campaign (including the dark portal) using reforged assets and custom models and voice over, if it's okay for you to use those themes in our campaign and we'll give you full credit of course, one last thing, can you record Draenor theme and shadowmoon slayer theme as well? we need those for the dark portal expansion.

Great work! Was it sufficient to just use the libraries, or did you adjust the individual note velocities, string expressions etc. as well? What DAW did you use, and any plugins, e.g. UAD?
I didn't know about the libraries at first, so I made these mostly by ear..but for the upcoming ones, I will probably use the official midi files as reference:)

There's such a grit & feeling of *_war_* to the Warcraft 2 soundtrack that latter Warcrafts, and many similar games, didn't capture.
