Eve basically had a villain origin story, and she still grew up to be an awesome superhero.
Eve didn't heal herself, she just fixed her costume. If you notice later in the fight she's still bleeding.
thats why i was confused in the moment.. this isnt scripted lol
I feel like Eve is supposed to be an allegory for autism or neurodivergence. Like, she hit all the "oh same" notes for me and I'm also on the spectrum.
- stares off into space for hours
- hyper-obsessed and special interests
- trouble socializing, no friends
- can't relate to their own family
- very empathetic, even to people she barely knows (like she knew her half-siblings, the doctor guy, and her birth-mother for like half a day total; I don't mean to sound like a jerk but, she literally *just* met them)
- called weird or a freak her whole life
- trouble with school, disinterest in certain subjects
also excelling at one subject but being bad at others, a lot of autistic people will get labeled "genuises" for basically having a special interest in one thing and then be picked apart for "not applying" themselves in others etc.
and i also just realized "normal" (neurotypical/non-super) people looking down on her, seeing her as weird, and calling her a freak VS. people like her siblings who significantly struggle more with their disabilities calling her perfect (because no matter who you are, if you're disabled and need more support then everyone will always compare you to disabled people who excel)
idk if shes an allegory i think she just has autism
Holy shit, maybe THAT'S why I loved the special so much. Like after the masterful mystery/story of Season 1, the immediate takeaway I had after watching the special was "That might be my favorite thing Invincible has done". Even after Season 2, I still think it's favorite.
There might be single moments that hit higher in the main series (All of the Omni-Man stuff, "I thought you were stronger") but pound for pound, I think I just enjoyed the special more. Felt more personal and I really resonated with Eve's arc in that one.
I already loved Eve and found her an absolutely amazing and strong character. But this special gave me a whole new respect for her. Not only was Eve brilliant, strong, and badass as a kid, but mentally strong enough to go through all that death and sadness in a single night and then made the best of an absolutely awful situation with her living family. She basically had a villain backstory, and still took the high road and became the hero.
That line in season 1
"I'm done with this thing, and that includes this stupid family" (something like that)
Hits harder now.
Nice pfp!
@@aitanacruz9882 c:
My favorite line from this special will always be "Killed people I didn't even know I loved". I think it's really profound, and that despair is something I've felt many many times before.
Whenever I hear about an LGBT person getting killed in a hate crime it feels like I'm losing a piece of myself; I didn't know them, but they're my siblings, and I will mourn them as I hear their stories.
There's also this one video (among many) that I saw on twitter back when the 2020 George Floyd riots were happening, that after spending days reading everyone's thoughts and feeling, just made me burst into tears and ugly sob. Those first few weeks were rough by themselves, whenever I watched videos of officers hurting protestors it's like my heart broke in two, but this video broke me. It was of a young black woman yelling at a black police officer as he's standing there, not letting people leave. It's a short clip, the only thing she says is "I could've been your daughter....I could've been your daughter!" while crying, and even now remembering her voice it makes me tear up. It's a core memory, I don't think I'll ever forget, but I do think it hit me more because I have parent issues as well.
Either way, the sentiment of mourning for the loss of people you didn't get to know is so viscerally human to me. Debbie explained to Nolan her perspective of humanity, through her newly developed lense of being a mother, and it resonated with his own experiences of being a father, but to me this is a better example of humanity. It's pure empathy.
She could see what they would've looked like, had they not been experimented on, through their atoms. She saw the people they could've been on a molecular level, and she loved them.
That's such a beautiful sentiment, you are clearly a really empathetic and lovely person. Wishing you all the best!
@@acucumbergrowingoutofthegr2223 Thank you!
Another line along those lines that cut me deep was a line from the show Amphibia: _"'I've always wondered... can you miss someone you never actually knew?"_
Amphibia, in case you don't know, is a Disney cartoon centering on Anne Boonchuy's, plight to return to her own world after being magically transported to another. It's a show that alternates between fun, comedic, everyday slice-of-life content and it's often-heavy overarching narrative.
However the line above doesn't even come from a main storyline episode. The episode starts as one of those everyday slice of life stories midway through Season 2, where Anne and her adoptive family go shopping in the big city. Anne's looking for a gift for her mom. Finds one as the grand prize of a contest, wacky hijinks ensue.
However after the episode proper concludes, it fades into the evening. The elder Plantar child, 10-year-old Sprig Plantar, stirs from his slumber and walks out to the hotel room balcony (where he, Anne, and the rest of his family are staying) to find Anne sitting and reflecting.
What follows is such an emotional gutpunch. Anne opens up about her own mom, what she liked about her, what drove her nuts. Then, with tears welling, she expresses how much she missed her mom, how she would even take her back at her most frustrated.
And then Sprig responds, about how "it's cool you know your mom though", opening up about his own understanding of parenthood, having lost his two parents when he was very little.
Which is when Sprig says that line _"Can you miss someone you never actually knew?"_ Said with the genuine fascination and curiosity of a child. He tries to chuckle it off "as something silly" before Anne comes over and embraces him in a heartfelt solidarity. The camera pans up to a special credit sequence and that's how the episode ends.
I expected the heavy moments from like the season finales but I was like "this was just a wacky slice-of-life episode, where on Earth did THIS come from. I didn't know there would be TEARS!"
Sorry if this is rambled on. But, all that said, that quote you shared was one I DEEPLY agree with. Such a powerful sentiment.
something i liked about this episode was that in season 1, when mark talks to eve after freezing up on his first mission, eve says that she was the same way on her first mission, and there was that whole bit where she mentioned throwing up a bunch
in this episode we see that she didnt actually do that. we see her first expedition as atom eve and she didnt freeze, she didnt puke, nothing. she made all that up for mark, to make him feel better
very nice selfless thing she did for mark that i really liked
I hope that was on purpose and not just a fkup in the writing
either way, it fits with the narrative you made.
18:18 Seeing how Bill released these out of order... Yeah about that.
9:52 "Im gonna atomize your dad." Made me nearly spit out my drink lmao
Atom Eve is already one of the most powerful people in the universe but when she's able to temporarily overcome her mental block like she did at the end she's truly the only one worthy of the name Invincible.
Also Side note but just wanted to say you're awesome and my favourite reaction/review/discussion channel and it's like not even close, though I do love all the other wonderful people I've found through the Amphibia/TOH community.
also not really a spoiler, Eve's dad hates her being smart and gifted because she's a girl, he's just your run of the Mill Misogynist, if Eve were a boy he probably would have embraced her intelligence and her power
right like I'm actually surprised how this goes over so many people's heads. his first instinct when she tells him that Rex cheated on her is to demand that she forgives him and goes back to him! 💀
This music in this show is so absurdly well selected.
"Are those Sapphic women okay?"
Me watching any of the last 5 cartoons I've been obsessed with (the answer is no)
Love your support for mental health; from my xp: to anyone who's ever been a victim of violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I wasn't 'different', if I was 'normal' I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon. I've always had kinda androgynous look, which was a fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :)
Thank you, I think I needed to hear that. Well done on your career, I hope it all goes amazing for you!
@@acucumbergrowingoutofthegr2223 Hi, thank you so much.
I just got home from a morning to almost midnight shift, I haven’t eaten in 10 hours and I have a raging headache. But I’m so fucking happy regardless of all that because I see a new video from your insightful self on one of my favourite episodes of invincible. Genuinely thank you for this.
hope you're feeling better!
It was an X on her chest in season one, it was an animation error, they didn't fix it until the last episode
I'm deeply impressed by how much this episode both cleaves to the original comic and improves on it in every way.
i, too, was a c section baby. i used to joke about it in band all the time when our director said we were starting on c section. she eventually got tired of it
I think her dad calling her a freak isn't because she's smart but instead because she has an instinctual knowledge of atoms. She isn't a normal smart kid who likes chemistry but instead a normal kid who has a perfect knowledge of one specific thing.
It's kind of like the difference in attitude toward neurotypical children having interests as opposed to neurodivergent/AuDHD kids having hyperfixations.
It's like "Why can't you have a normal interest/hobbie, like cars/barbies/drawing/dancing/etc?" when your kid is only interested in bugs or plants or something. Or it could be "Why can't you enjoy this Normal thing a Normal amount?".
The underlying question is "Why are you so different? I didn't do anything wrong." because to many parents having an autistic child is a moral failing, and reflects badly on them.
Especially kids like Eve was depicted need a lot more care and affection to behave like a normal kid, as evidenced through the babysitter scene. He took the time to understand her and her 'hobbie' and in return she came out of her shell and actually played with him like a normal child with legos, even if all they did was make molecules. It's actually great developmental progress, but the dad shat all over it, setting her several steps back.
For many conservative parents it's quite normal to grow up with the "First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in a baby carriage" mentality. Getting married and having children is supposed to make your life complete, it's supposed to fulfill _you_ and _your_ emotional needs. Having a kid to them sets the expectation of "Oh, now I've done it. My life's purpose is complete. Everything should fall into place now, more or less". So when these types of parents get this type of kid, it's almost like, why couldn't you fulfill my fantasy? Why can't you let me have this? Why do you need so much more time and care to act how I want you to?
Even if it's not malicious it's very easy for this frustration to build over time, like we saw with Eve's mom. It just keeps festering, and it won't stop unless they change how they think on a fundamental level. Many don't want to, though.
Atom Eve special was something unexpected and lots to unload from her origins. I love it. It makes that all the more intense seeing her and Mark struggle in their lives.
That "So young.." in the intro hit me in my soul.
I always hear it "Adam" eve
That’s part of the pun.
i definitely thought it was adam eve when she was introduced in season 1 (especially with the unfortunate x symbol) and i was like what does that even mean. what powers does that entail. lol
My theory is that Eve's dad has noticed, subconciously or conciously, she doesn't really look like either him or his wife, and since he doesn't know she was switched at birth, he just worries she's evidence of an affair.
The voice actor for Eve's babysitter just reminded me that I think Bill has never seen Craig of the Creek?? And I think he would not only really enjoy it, but it could be a break from all the darkness and violence of invincible! Wholesome kids playing in nature!
"Welp! I loved THAT!" (*is crying*)
Mood.
C-section baby in the house :P
Thanks for sharing your reactions with us here!
I absolutely love your insightful takes on these pop culture things. I have very intelligent people in my life, but none of them ever want to analyze things like this and watching your videos is like finally having a chance to discuss these things with a friend just freaking gets it.
:')
You dropped this when you uploaded this video 👑👑👑👑
Good news! I've been watching your content for some years now. I discovered your channel at the mids of my highschool experience and now I'm in mids of college. I really liked the style you have with your hat since then so I wanted one too. I had some new friends through the years that use that kind of hat and I wanted to try it too, but still couldn't get one. Finally, last weekend I found one I could purchase and buy! Now I can't stop using it lol
Hey Bill your one of my favorite youtuber. Your always there when the silent is to much. ❤
I was looking forward to this!
As an aside, I can't say anything specific due to spoilers, but based on your particular interests, you really *really* wanna give X-Men '97 a look.
Great reaction!
Such a gut punch!
Perfect timing I just finished watching his reaction to invincible
I like to watch your videos and reactions and reviews
“She is the Barbenheimer”
I really hope to see a Rex special after what we saw in season 2 but from the sounds of things they aren't going to do a special between season 2 and 3, which would be a tragic missed opportunity.
Invincible! Stop hurting our Bill!
You NEED to do a trying to Stan chappell roan
since you seem to be on a bit of a superhero kick, you should know that the x-men '97 show is really cool so far!! i never saw the original show but so long as you know the basic premise of the group its easy to follow, and the pacing and the drama is crazy. itd be cool to hear your thoughts on it if it piques your interest
Do "The bravest warriors" they have season 4 on cartoon hangover now.
shout-out to Tatiana Maslany as the lizard queen! Great actress, very cool to see her here
Be careful about spoilers! Sometime last week some character sheets from season 3 leaked, so make sure to steer clear of those because they have some major spoilers in them.
Eve's "parents" are the actual worst people in the series
