How Do Chickens Reproduce

- A girl chicken is called a hen.
A boy chicken is called a rooster.
A hen lays an egg every day, but unless there is a rooster the egg will not be fertile and will never hatch into a baby.
The rooster jumps on the hen and breeds her and the egg gets fertilized inside the hen before she lays it. Chickens are not like fish or frogs where the egg is fertilized outside, with chickens the egg is fertilized inside the hen.
It’s important to keep an eye on the rooster and make sure he’s not too aggressive and hurting the hens. A polite rooster will do a little mating dance to trigger the breeding.
If there is a rooster with the hen the eggs she lays will be fertile, and if she sits on the fertile eggs for 21 days they will hatch into baby chickens.
Me trying to sleep at 1am
My brain: *Do you want to know how chickens reproduce*
Me last night but I forgot to google it so I finally googled it today and I’m not disappointed 😂😂😂
It’s 1am here omg wtf
literally same it's even 01:40 a.m. rn
Bruh it's 3:51 here
@@Edmaste bruh it’s 6 am now
I'll have to have a talk with my rooster...so he can teach me the chicken dance
Tryna mate with your hen?? Goodluck mate

Not to be rude but how old are you...?
@@irises9553 rude? Not at all. Clearly I am a grandfather. I am in my 50s. Why the question? Do you have a comment on chickens or teachers?
@@johnnypunish oh no just the question you know well sorry for being rude... and yes I have some chicken that my dad is raising
I do the same dance at Rick's bar and grill. Works every time! Thanks again
I love how she got excited when she talked about it! wow wow
"...get rid of the mean rooster". I was expecting a psychology recommendation.
Well okay then
Thank you, Becky, for such an informative video; now I understand the birds and the bees of chickens. I'm interested in raising chickens, your videos are very helpful in helping me obtain vital information on the subject.
Thanks again and be well.
Why am I watching this it's 6 am
7 am for me. Hehehehe
What a great video! Hilarious! Thanks for all the info - and for the 21 days that she sits on eggs, how much of the day does she get up to walk around each day vs staying seated? And does she lay any eggs during those 21 days??
Great questions!
I hear you need to have a separate "brooding" area for the chicken mom and chicks or the bigger ones will kill them. I suppose you could just fence off an area for her....Do you have any "Mean Rooster Stew" recipes!! That would be cool wouldn't it!!!
+joAnn DI The other chickens won't kill the baby chicks when mama hen is there. Mother hens are VERY protective of their babies.
+joAnn DI Yes, show us a "Mean Rooster Stew" recipe!
+Becky's Homestead thats not true other chickens will kill the babies regardless.
joAnn DI I
Hi hope you're having a good time today
Haha, you better do the dance for a little chicken romance.
I really did learn many things in this video. I was never taught anything like this in school. Thanks, really fascinating.
Thanks Becky so much this video was so help full.
Years of farmville gameplay has lead to this
i knew this but my friend and my whole family thinks that hens just lay eggs and that they magically turn into chickens if a rooster is there because the hen needs to feel safe, but bruh they need to mate first, it's not magic
She's not wearing a bra
really? what are you 12?
in the hot places like Africa, they don't wear anything,.so what..Just butt covers,.
Bob Kol's I saw that nipple hahah
your stupid.
Bob Kol's Its normal to not wear a bra. Bras are uncomfortable.
You are many ways better than my shy biology teacher. Thanks
I think I will try that dance in the club maybe I'll have better luck. Cause I'm struggling to mate.
My family and I really enjoy you and your tips. You are funny :-)
How do commercial operations fertilize 100,000 eggs at a time?
how do you know if an egg is fertile so yo don't take it from the nest? loved the video.
+Melissa Jennings if you have a rooster in with the hens you can assume the eggs are fertile.
O' so unless you want fertile eggs don't keep a roaster in the pen.?
+Melissa Jennings It's fine to eat fertilized eggs, they taste the same. And the rooster will act as a body guard to the hens and alert them to danger.
@@alexandriaseverson9035 wow i didnt know this. We were worried that because we had a rooster the eggs would be fertilized and we would end up with hundreds of chickens.
Gave me the perfect answer in the 1st minute thank you
Does a rooster need to sit on hen again and again to produce fertilized eggs from hen ? or if he sits one time its ok the hen will lay 10 fertilized eggs ? or how much fertilized eggs the hen wil lay after having one sit by rooster ?
sory for bad english but plaese asnwer . i hav a broody hen i sold the rooster week ago . she layed egg today and i am gona incubate that egg .
My goodness. I never knew how chickens are made. Some of my friends said it is external fertilization and it is the rooster hatching the eggs in order to get it fertilize. LOL.
If she doesn't sit on the eggs till there is a pile won the eggs go bad? Also will a Hen sit on another hens eggs or just her own? Sorry don't have the first clue about chicken care.
My rooster does the little day to me all the tine but my other rooster doesn’t BUT other rooster is Lightning Fast.
Incomplete. One succesfull mating last how many days??? Please answer
Ok so ? If I mix breeds like a jersey giant rooster and barred rock hen...will the chickens always be born to look there mother or can they come out a mixed mess?? I only ask bc a neighbor mixed a few breeds and they all came out looking like mom. So was wondering b4 I sell my off breed jersy giant.????
so if my chicken lays one egg and leaves it and it gets cold it will be ok as she’ll sit on them properly once she has a clutch of eggs? i had been taking them as she was just leaving them and they were getting cold.
Yes, a hen will leave an egg in her nest every day. Once there are enough ( whatever she decides) she will start to set on them all for 21 days. That way they all hatch about the same time😛❤️☀️
wicked thanks! i thought the first eggs would be too cold before she started nesting :)
I just learned something new today Thank you
How many roosters should you have at one time, and should you get the eggs before they pile up and she sits on them, or does it matter?
i looked up how to chickens reproduce? bc my bf said looked it up, i did. and i learned a lot from this video imma tell my bf to do the chicken dance
This was so awesome thank you! I had no idea how that worked. So I suppose, if you have both hens and roosters, and you don't want baby chicks, you have to keep them seperated....
+Ramon Garcia no you can have them together. If you don't let her set the eggs then it won't matter.
Ramon Garcia Thank you for the advice, sorry I didnt see your comment until now. Do you have chickens?
My rooster dose the dance but hens don’t notice him and walk off
He dose force himself on them but he doesn’t pull out feathers had him for 5 months or so
Just picturing Gob from Arrested Developmemt do the chicken dance
Does the chicken know which eggs are fertilized? Does she, can she, distinguish between fertile and non-fertile (regular) egg?
ivoman7 no.
Here's my question: does the hen lay eggs while she is incubating the 8 or 9 eggs for 21 days. Also, does the rooster have to fertilize the eggs daily for 9 days? Lastly, how long does rooster "sperm" last in the hens body? I know it's up to 72 hours in humans. Oh and can more than 1 egg be fertilized at the same time?
Can I use eggmaker with a rooster at the same time , will the eggs still be fertile
Hold up now Becky 👀
how long will she lay fertile eggs after breeding?
The rooster mates plenty of times, once she lays she can repraduce another fertile egg again
+Warrior Son
Thank you so much. We don't want a rooster but can borrow one from a friend just wanted to know how long we would need to candle eggs for after the "visit" and about how many eggs would be potential chicks per hen.
Well you don't need the candle any eggs until the hen goes broody. After your rooster has his conjugal visit you need to not collect any eggs that your hen lays. After anywhere from 6 to 10 eggs your hen will stop laying and will start to incubate the eggs. After 2 to 3 days of her brooding you can candle to see how many if any of the eggs are fertile
Charlie . They layed eggs . But one of my hen who mated herself layed only one egg three days ago). But not laying more reply this bro
Katie Kelley - for a couple weeks possibly
How do you know whether the eggs you collect have been fertilized and safe to eat?
An egg being fertilised does not mean it is safe to eat, it just means an embryo of a chick will start to grow if it is warm enough . If you don't have a rooster that won't happen
Are hens run after the little chicken dance
It can also work on hybrid hens
You make my rooster dance!
👍terrific info. Thank you. 💝
👍Regarding the bad rooster....Very similar to real human life. Bad mean rooster...get rid of him!😂😆
Roosters get rid of them or just eat them:') Nice video Becky your Awesome:')
How can you tell which egg has been roosted if you cracked two eggs?
Again, one has roosted & one girl is a virgin,
can you eat the firtile eggs if you pic the eggs every day?
Absolutely!
Thank You! =)
I wanna see the rooster dance- but im not gonna do it ;-;
A couple minutes ago I was feeding my chickens and Our rooster was chasing a hen and grabbing her by the neck and he started breeding her, so does that mean I have a mean rooster?
I heard that roosters don't have a peinus? Is this true?
Idk why they don’t ever say that the rooster shits out sperm 😂
I love you Becky sunshine! You teach me so much! 🌼🌼🌼🌼😀😀🐓🐓🐓💕💕
i came here because my egg started making a chipping sound when i put it to boil
2:41 she means "eat them!!!!!"
Not enough information. Had to watch a different video.
Thank you ❤ very informative 😊
I’m glad it helps☀️❤️☀️
Can i ask what type of nest should i put in my chickens' nestingboxes
straw, wood shavings. soft and something they can scratch about
It's call Mexican dance
I have a mean Rooster... I still got baby chicks out of it though!
My bar rock rooster is the sweetest guy! The other brown leghorn rooster was a total jerk!! He'd beat the other to a pulp so I separated them. After a huge storm the chicken coop door blew open (The wind was no match for the latch apparently.) He beat the other one to a pulp again so I culled him and fed him raw to my wolf hybrid who laid in the yard sun bathing and munching on his snack!
Here's my issue now. I have a few bantam chickens which are a smaller breed, and one bar rock hen. Can a huge bar rock rooster "service" the smaller hens too?? Soon we'll have 12 more chicks but they're all a big breed.
Jesse James He can but it is greatly advised you have at least 10+ hens per rooster.
Gosh Becky is such a bad advise giver. Please, if you have chickens, get another source for your info
Hi becky🐔🥰
Does the rooster have to mate with her everyday for her to lay an egg
+Bilal Imran No, you don't even need a rooster at all. Roosters have nothing to do with a hen laying eggs. Roosters just fertilize the egg to make a baby.
Becky's Homestead i mean for the chicks does the rooster have to mate evry tine fir the egg to be fertile or is one tine okay
Bilal Imran a hen can remain fertile for three weeks, so no.
like always great positive videos :)
very good
Will the 45 day chicken will lay egg
I mean cornish x

This works for humans too. Instead of just the dance, the male tells the woman how much money he has and how he would be a great asset to her potential children genetically.

So basically just make sure the rooster isn't a rapist
I remember I was out in the yard with my little cousin. My rooster did a little dance and mounted one of my hens. My cousin thought they were hugging and I had to lead her away lol
So the rooster dance is basically them asking for consent. Love that!
Thank you, Becky! This question was on my mind for the longest time!!
So he literally does "the chicken dance" that's funny!

No, it’s not,
I was trying to sleep but I kept waking up because I didn’t know where roosters came from. I’m so stupid for a few minutes I thought hens only gave birth to females. Why am I so stupid, lmao.
At the beginning I almost thought this was the *talk*
Hi Becky! Question: does the rooster need to jump on the hen eight times in order for the hen to lay eight eggs? Or, does the rooster jump on the hen once and then she pops out eight eggs one per day?
Either its getting very cold out, or by1:30 the rooster mating dance is getting more than the hens going! FANTASTIC!!!!
I do know Becky was getting very excited tell us about this.
amen- you can scroll through and see
this seems very remedial to me, but i am continually amazed at how many adults dont understand the basics of animal reproduction. so many have asked me how i can have eggs without a rooster. its embarrassing...
+Renaissance MarineTV I agree with you.......... Most of the time when people come over to feed the chickens or buy eggs I get the same question. They want to know how the hen can lay eggs without a rooster mounting them. We do have roosters, but keep them separate until we are ready for either broody hens or to fill up the incubator. The explanation I use is to relate it to the human biological experience. Once I do this, you can see the epiphany and they say "oh yea." I tell them female chickens (hens) have a predetermined number of eggs when they are born, just like female humans.......... a woman releases an egg (through menstruation) but that happens whether or not she's been with a man. I tell them that a chicken lays her eggs daily rather than once a month. Rob
+Renaissance MarineTV Lol! Next time someone asks that, just return the question with, "How does a woman get a period every month even though she isn't pregnant?" It's technically the same thing!
I mean, I agree with you anyone that doesn't understand an egg will not produce a chick without fertilization is amazingly ignorant... But at the same time I don't see anything wrong with an individual not knowing the specifics of how said eggs are fertilized.
Renaissance MarineTV But How Can You Have Eggs Without A Rooster ??
Maybe their hens are sluts
All I know is around the 1:54 mark... headlights started to come on! 😏
I have a rooster that does that dance in front of the hen but he is aggressive to me and attacks me.
Get rid of him. His offspring will likely inherit this trait.
+Teagan Brenton I plan on it.
Teagan Brenton fantastic I thought I had a hen get killed but she was off somewhere hatching babies! The attack rooster is the father. She has 14 little chicks running around. Hope most are hens the roosters will go oin the pot along with their father.
Are you a chicken too?
I would turn him into fried chicken
Man, that's great advice. I'm going to share this advice.
Loved it very informative.. I have a broody hen and she seems to want to be a mommy.. she even takes the other hens eggs and sits on them. We're thinking of letting them have a brood. I have a friend with a nice rooster we can borrow.. does their breed matter.. I have 3 different breeds of hens. Also how long should I borrow the rooster for? Sorry new to having backyard chickens. Value your advice greatly.
really you have a very beautiful farm, wish i could visit your farm some day
I searched for this video, cause I was thinking about how weird it is that hens lay eggs every day even though there's no rooster around them. So, thanks for the information.
