He is generally considered to be the man who ushered in the "Gospel Song Era." He accompanied himself on a small organ. He even used his organ in Scotland, where it is said of organs that there is a devil in every pipe. He also published his songs, and made millions of dollars for the Lord's work through the sales of his hymnals."
