  • The formula is what I use to determine correct tyre pressures on our van.

    BOY YOU MADE THAT SIMPLE.😂
I'VE WASTED AN HOUR BEFORE I GOT TO YOU.
    THANKS❤IT...

When I first got the van I thought the maximum cold inflation pressure written on the compliance plate was a little low so I did my own research and found my thoughts to be correct. So I did this video to help others. Appreciate your comment. Cheers!

I'm of the understanding (strictly from a tyre point of view and not its actual usage application) that dual and single is referring to the usage of dual or single tyres on an individual axle (ie 2 tyres on an axle = single, 4 tyres= dual). The reasoning for that is dual tyres are a lot wider than a single so there is the chance of higher loads being taken by a tyre over uneven ground or if a tyre fails etc... A non load sharing dual axle I think would be reasonable to use the dual max load as they could load up in a similar fashion to a dual tyre arrangement, and you could kinda argue the same with load sharing setups, but even in the event of a tyre failure the suspension is going to put load on the failed tyre and not really overload the others. Apart from that point the use of the formula is spot on. I also use the same formula on my 4wd for setting the base pressure, and fine tune from there.

Initially I didn’t think of 4 tyres being used on one axle as the information I was providing was for use on a caravan but what you say makes sense. Appreciate your comment. Cheers!

Just one question or point when the tyre states dual axle. I believe what they are saying is 4 tyres on one axle. Such as a tandem truck with 2 axles with 4 tyres on the rear and one steer axle

I am not an expert on large size truck tyres but in the case of caravan size tyres my understanding is dual axle written on the side wall of the tyre refers to two axles each with two tyres adding up to 4 tyres. I have never seen a single axle with 4 tyres under a caravan. Hope this makes sense and thankyou for your comment. Cheers!

Great video. Any suggestions on the best tyre pressure gauges. So much variations between them.

I use a Michelin Digital Tyre Tread Depth & Pressure Gauge 5-99 PSI have had it for ages and easy to use. Appreciate your comment. Cheers

Sep, thanks for the great explanation. I have always wondered how this is calculated. I run 50psi in my single axle pop top and putting the figures in the G and S calculator it came out pretty much spot on. I did have to do an educated guess on the weights as I haven't had it on a weighbridge.
I do need to buy a good 12V compressor to have in the car. Any thoughts.
Keep up the videos, I find them very well done, and most interesting.

Glad you found it helpful. I have an XTM 12 volt 150PSI compressor. I have used it a couple of times to pump up 4 car tyres that were flat and it worked well. It comes with clips to connect to your car battery and it is recommended to have the car running when using the pump as they draw a lot of power. Just need to check if the length of hose will be long enough to reach your van wheels. They are a little heavy but appear well made. I purchased it from Anaconda, Supercheap Auto also have them. Your comment is much appreciated. Cheers!

    Different pressures for same weight?
(my van is 1456 & can take either wheel/tyre size combo)
Maxxis AT LT 235/75/15 50psi max 1030 rating requires 35psi to carry 1456 for single axel van.
Yokoharma AT LT 225/75/16 80psi max 1215 rating requires 48psi to carry 1456 for single axel van.
Why does one tyre require 13 extra psi to carry same weight?
The Yokoharma with a higher load rating requires higher psi to carry the same weight as the Maxxis with a lower load rating.
This would seem to be counter intuitive.
    Any thoughts?

A couple of things come to mind, wider tyres carry the load over a larger area also the two tyres are completely different in diameter and ratings which would be the reason for the different inflation pressures. Appreciate your comment. Cheers!

@@sepsadventures Thanks for reply. Yes, it has to be some combination of the different specs of the two tyres.
Just a thought, my van only requires the lower load rated tyres, which can carry the weight at a lower psi therefore giving the van a softer ride.
Don't know if this would hold true across the board, but this may be an advantage over using tyres whose load rating is way higher than what is actually needed for any particular van.

    This is all very complicated.
I have always used the rule that after say 100 km if the pressure is right the pressure will have risen by 5psi. If it is more then the pressure is too low and if it is less they are too hard.

Yes the formula used to calculate correct tyre pressures can be a little complicated but I have included it for those that would like to know how to calculate a starting point. Then as you refer after the tyres have reached their operating temperature apply the 5 PSI rule. Thanks for your comment. Cheers!
