    I love seeing/hearing Tom get *so excited* during his description of the game!
    I haven't had a chance to play the original yet, but I've been wanting to since I first heard of it, and I've watched the review enough times that I feel I know the game somewhat. This looks like a great expansion/sequel, especially the Raxxon module. The only drawback I can think of offhand is that after you have played it a few times, you'll know the potential effects of the pills, and thematically, it would be more interesting if each time you found unidentified pills, they were completely unknown to you. (Maybe adding the possibility of researching the pills before taking them, especially if you have the pharmacist character in play, vs. just trying them blindly.)
    Building improvements seems like a great idea, and very natural to the game. Both Tom and Sam referred to it as "wasting" time and resources, which sounds pretty negative. I'm sure it's not always a waste, though, but a strategic choice of how you're going to spend your efforts. I like the idea of the DVD player. Maybe your choice of movies could determine whether it raises or lowers morale? And some movies would have an added noise penalty...
    I also would've liked to know more about the chimp. :-) In my version, one of the Crossroads cards would reveal that the chimp actually has the mind of the evil CEO of Raxxon, and he wants to take over the world with his undead legions.
    For the next expansion, I would love to see them try a rural setting (naturally inspired by Hershel's farm in Walking Dead). Woods, barns, silos, FARMING EQUIPMENT, zombified animals, etc. And I would call it..."The Heartland." Mmmm...tasty, tasty hearts...

    Just a heads up, I tried mixing the two games.(we really just wanted the dog to be honest), but the crossroad and the character cards use different colors. If you mix them, you CAN tell. Just as an fyi it doesn't quite work unless your group doesn't pay attention to that kind of thing. My group was a bunch of mtg players who are very aware of things like marking, so all of us noticed it.

    Raxxon is a nice cross reference to Plaid Hat's other game, Specter Ops. That whole game takes place in a Raxxon lab.

    • @jackjohn810
      @jackjohn810 8 років тому +11

      Raxxon Pharmaceuticals was part of the original lore for Dead of Winter. They're the company that is responsible for the zombie outbreak. Then while developing Spectre Ops, Plaid Hat decided to set it in the future in a Raxxon facility. The biggest piece of lore that links the too is that Raxxon was aware that they had unleashed the zombie virus and positioned themselves to take advantage of the outbreak. This allowed them to become an extremely powerful cooperation, which is why Raxxon is the target of the agents in Spectre Ops.

    Not sure if anyone pointed it out, but this base game has less content than original Dead of Winter, so I'd still recommend the original over this one. There are 50% more survivors in original Dead of Winter than in base game and original also has more Crossroads cards as well as more scenarios and objectives.
    So content wise original is much bigger. But Long Night has interesting variant modules that the original does not have.

    Biggest issue I can see is the amount of survivors having unusual amounts of lenient dice requirements, too many survivors are capable of using low dice rolls for standard actions making them Over Powered as a result. Also there should be a few crappy survivors you can draw and be stuck with who say require 5+ dice for searching and attacking I feel that would help balance out the game.

      I got told that if you did not have the vanilla game, just get Long night. LN has all of the same components as the vanilla game plus 3 extra modules (also better basic components overall). Literally the only differences between the two after that are the characters and the crossroad cards. LN can be considered more a deluxe edition of the vanilla game.

  • @AlyssSilence

    Suprised that your guys didn't talk about the more random elements of the new modules. For me and my friends, the difficulty in the original all lies with how often you have to roll for exposure; if you play well, you can avoid rolling it often, and have a much greater chance of winning. Granted, there are still elements of chance beyond your control in the game, such as Crossroads cards, action die rolls each round, even how the shuffle of item decks comes out, but they weren't overwelming elements. The two big modules in The Long Night adds a lot more chance into the game, and I feel its to its detriment. Crisis cards were already pot luck, but they now add bandits, and getting back what the bandits take also requires you to roll on a table. These are both elements of chance, things you can't plan for or affect at all. Likewise, Raxxon requires you to roll for exposure whenever you search there, and the special zombies both require you to, completely by luck, have the right dice for the containment combination, and if released involve mroe random chance to get rid of.
    I appreciate that these new elements were meant to be challenging, and had to be governed by some kind of mechanic. But all these added chance components heavily tip the game from one being about calculated risk to one one where luck dominates much more heavily. Maybe that's what people like, and I'm not saying they're incorrect: if I don't like the modules, I can make up my own rules for how they work or not use them entirely. I think something like this is worth mentioning in the review though. Didn't this strike anyone as a definite change in the feel of the game?
    tl;dr New modules introduce a lot more elements of chance to the game, why wasn't this discussed in the review?

  • @ChannelEmrakul

    • @cthulwho8197
      @cthulwho8197 8 років тому

      From reading the writing on the item and crisis cards Tom revealed the locations are the same six (school, library, police station and so on). I didn't see the location cards fall out in the component drop but if the game is able to be played as a standalone they have to be there.
      The Roxxon location didn't drop either but we saw it later so I assume Tom left them out of the drop because they are too large and would cover too much up.

  • @XRay44

    • @Blacklion9794
      @Blacklion9794 8 років тому

      I know right. the crisis need some creative, yet irritating features; like during the crisis on that turn, something bad going on, giving a bit challenge.
      For example: During this crisis, all characters' attack n search points is increased by 1, or if u perform search noise happens, or all items cannot be equiped by any character, or force all of characters back from non-colony locations to the colony, etc...

    • @TheOldMan-75
      @TheOldMan-75 8 років тому

      Aiman Azman The game is just so damn mathy. My gaming group consists of mostly IT guys and in this game you usually know how many zombies are spawning at which location, how many zombies you can kill with the dice you have rolled etc. Most of the time the best route to go is just so painfully obvious. Even the 2-4 crossroad cards that trigger per game barely make a difference. Sometimes there's some nice flavour text and it's funny when the cards have really specific ways of triggering and yet they somehow do BUT the effect they have on the game is usually non-existent.

    • @Blacklion9794
      @Blacklion9794 8 років тому

      Exactly. There's so much to do with very limited resources. Every single move can bring either good or bad possibilities, not to mention the unexpected crossroads n dice rollings. In addition, this game tests our loyalty among players n game plannings, it brings us conflicts n arguements...we could survive the game but almost always didnt win it. To be honest, this is the badass game i must win before i die

      As I've said before, SoA was too realistic for my tastes. Last I checked, we don't actually have zombies, mutant hordes, and fictitious pharmaceutical companies with experimental, DNA-altering drugs lying about...but we do have exactly all of the elements that SoA offers, don't we? The two games are quite different. So, liking one and not the other shouldn't instill any confusion at all.

    • @StefanLopuszanski
      @StefanLopuszanski 8 років тому +1

      I dunno, I still think it is weird. We don't have zombies and such, but we do have instances where people are stranded and turn on each other. They resort to looting and "survival of the fittest" with many things happening just as they do in Dead of Winter. DoW is more about the people and their survival than the zombies. They are really just secondary to everything else.

    New characters and more cards sounds great, and I like the improvements idea, but all the other modules sound like bloat for a game where a lot was already going on. A pass for me. Also, L4D zombies ripped off right down to naming the big one the Tank.

      if only they add Vehicles to spice things up, but required some fuels, tools for fixing, even books to provide manual use of the vehicles. This way there'll be an objective called Escape from the Winter. like finding vehicle parts, keys n all characters must be gathered at the colony to escape..

    • @skyedga
      @skyedga 6 років тому +1

      I know this is a late reply, but they seem like bloat, but just Raxon and the improvements are nice and add flavor. I never play with Bandits because they make the game feel clunky in my eyes. RAxon isn't bad at all cause its pretty easy to manage. They are fun to play with and allow you to really power trip a bit. Something they didn't mention that my group noticed is the cards in this set(the characters mostly) generally are simply better. You feel like most of the cards have more impact and value then the other set, so the added complexity and difficulty is easier to manage. As for the l4d rip off? I kinda assumed it was simply paying respects to it as a game in the same franchise but I'm a little more forgiving about that sort of thing.

It's hard to not know their name. Miniaturemarket.com is another competitive rival business of theirs. They are both cutting away at Amazon's profits in board gaming hobby because these online hobby stores buy these games in bulk; amazon however has a broad range of products and can't bulk buy a vast amount of games like the online stores do.

      I know this is a late reply, but something they didn't mention in the video is the characters and items you find in Last Night are in general just better. If you play with Raxon, Raxon can actually break the game, no lie. For example, one they didn't mention allows you to take one item from the top four of any item deck other than raxon. So they make it "harder" in certain regards, but you start out on a somewhat more even playing field.

    Expansion is tougher, but seems to me that you get more re playability out of him? Yes, you don't get so much crossroad cards, but a lot of time those cards failed to do anything in base game from what we saw. Half of the cards were if you control this or that character that you never would, and so on...
    Since only thing from what I see lacking in Expansion is number of crossroads cards compared to original, right? Everything else you get same number, right?
    So I simply don't see why get base game, when you get more of everything in this expansion. ANd you can decide which stuff to use and which not to. And characters, equipment etc seems more fun from this expansion than from base gama?!

      As a person who has played both I would get the original game first. There is not that many main objectives in the expansion, If i remember correctly there are half. I could see that becoming an issue if you only had the expansion.
      You also are going to have alot of the crossroads cards in the expansion still trigger off certain characters.
      Yes you get the same number of location cards but they are different. You also get less characters 20 in the expansion vs 30 in the base game. In addition some of the characters are only used with certain modules.
      In my opinion I really enjoyed the expansion but I would only get it if you have the base game. Otherwise the replayability is less than the original. Just because it gets repetitive.

      Thank you. So if you own both versions you will have duplicates of the colony and 6 locations?
      Is the artwork or layout any different?

      +webjaker no, the locations in 'The Long Night' are actual boards as opposed to the originals cardboard.

    this "expansion" does not expand the first game, but aims to completely replace it. therefore with this move plaidhat insults everybody who owns the first game and isn´t a millionaire. small expansions for the original game would have clearly been the way to go. they lost me on future dow products for sure

      I'm in the same boat as you are. The original is just 2 years old and this seems very much like a replacement. A proper expansion would've been great but I don't need another Dead of Winter that I will most likely not mix with the original stuff anyway just to get Tim Taylor to do some home improvements.

    Its more of the same, so its a cash grab.

      More of the same is the best type of expansion. Increases the variety without introducing more complexity. This could've just been new characters, crossroads, and goals and that would've been sufficient for me.

      +Jim I feel your frustration. This IS a cash grab but if people want to spend their money and support those kinds of business decisions then what can you do? I think we had a similar set of comments on the Havoc at Homestead 2 so to keep it brief I "expect", as Mr Healy put it, a business to consider its customers and to make good decisions that support loyalty. At the end of the day however money sure does have a way of making morally good decisions seem less effective than dirty tactics.

      It would have been nice of them to focus their time on something new instead of this.
      And it would have been nice if this was a true expansion (with an expansion MSRP) instead of the whole game again. Kind of a slap in the face to those of us who bought the original.

      This is definitely a No Buy for me. This is basically a gold edition without ever having released the expansions separately so you can't help but feel that you're buying the same product twice.

      It isn't so much a cash grab if you play it. I would probably have thought of it like this. Dead of Winter is a beta and the Dead of Winter Last Night is more like the full version. Frankly the game is the same, as they mentioned, if you remove the editions, except for the fact the game feels like it fits together better. What do I mean? Well the characters in general feel better. There are better weapons as well. The game overall just feels a little more balanced in certain regards. The pieces in certain places also feel better built. Honestly? My perosnal opinion is skip the base game and just get Last Night and that is all you need. The only sad thing is you don't get the dog. Otherwise? You get a superior product.
