I can't wait for this anime to blow up. The animation is a master class, the story is incredibly interesting it reminds me of Death Note. I PRAY IT GETS THE ATTENTION THAT IT DESERVES. Edit: i'm going to buy myself cake because i've never had comment blow up like this
As a fan of Arthur Conan Doyle. I've always loved the Sherlock series and every adaptation of it has always been very fun and well done. Some of my favourite and most well renowned is BBCs Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and there have been tons of anime adaptations that are inspired by Sherlock that I enjoy but very rarely do we get a series that focuses on the best written villain Moriarty and their take on him has been phenomenal. He's worthy of joining my husbando collection.
YES! I absolutely love it when series/movies give us a different POV of the story by focusing on the villain instead. Moriarty is an enigmatic character, and this show really knows how to bring the most intriguing/charming aspect of him
[Spoilers for death note and moriarty the patriot ahead] So, I've come across countless comments over the past week where people compare this show to Death note and William to Light Yagami. While I understand that would be the common take in the first 5-6 episodes of the show, it only later becomes evident that this foreshadowing was just to set the tone and that William is nothing like Light. Even the character writing, William James Moriarty is far more superior than Light Yagami, who had a terrible moral compass and was willing to take up the position of God, covered up for himself very sloppily and killed people who had never committed crimes in their entire life. It was also by sheer luck that L happened to figure out that Light was Kira. Death Note's end was hastily written out and it almost felt like the writer had no clue how he would end the story himself. While I'm not implying that Death Note is a bad show, it was definitely a master piece but a lot of elements in it appear forced and almost newly introduced just for the sake of the plot. On the other hand, Moriarty the Patriot comes across as a polished anime, almost as if the writer had the end very clear in his mind since the very beginning. It is the perfect example of introducing new elements exactly where they're needed. None of the arcs in the show felt forced, and each of them were crucial for the development of the plot. William Moriarty was not a bad person and he was perfectly aware of the crimes he committed and was prepared beforehand to face all the consequences that show up, though you only realise this when Irene shows up. Thats where the anime takes a turn and makes you question, "Am I right in comparing this show to Death Note?" and thats where your answer is no. There is no clear antagonist or protagonist of the story, (Save, Augustus Charles Milverton) but considering he shows up for just a few episodes, it isn't right to call him the antagonist of the story, he's just another element introduced to make the plot move forward. William James Moriarty was a true, selfless, patriot and everyone who was around him loved him, not because he was intelligent or amazing but because he was a good person. He was nice to everyone who was nice. He helped everyone who needed help. Light Yagami was just an arrogant bastard with a god complex which only enhanced more the day he got the Death note and as the story progressed. So please, if you still think that Light Yagami and William are similar characters, and that Moriarty the Patriot and Death Note are similar shows, I request you to look at all the facts again. That concludes my rant
Your comment was very eye-opening! It's clear that you have great understanding in both source materials. It's def a more unpopular opinion to say that Death Note is not as good as Moriarty The Patriot-- but yes, I do agree that former has a very rushed and almost anticlimatic ending. The death of a certain character had made the show gone downhill, and soon enough I found myself questioning some details and plot holes within the story. In terms of characters... I think both Light Yagami and Moriarty have their similarities and differences. As you've mentioned, Light is arrogant, ambitious, and will not hesitate to abuse his powers. He thinks of himself as a God who will recreate the world into a more just and beautiful one. Moriarty, on the other hand, is more calculating and careful in his plans. His only wish was to change his nation for the better, to bring equality and put an end to the corrupted hiearchy system. So yes, as someone who is interested in history and the structure of older British society, Moriarty is much more realistic, benevolent and likeable. He is the complex hero who cloaks as a villain, while Light is the complex villain who cloaks as a shallow hero. That said, I do think both of them are extremely dedicated in their objective of "cleansing evilness" (Light gone off track with it due to his superiority complex, of course). They are also extremely smart individual who we can associate with religious figures and symbolism (Light = Wannabe God, Moriarty = The Necessary "Devil"). So perhaps that's why there were so many comparisons between them. Reading your comment do make me realized how much I prefer Moriarty over Light. You've explained his character in great details and emphasized his kindness. Tbh, they're both interesting characters to discuss about, despite one being far more villainous than the other. I may like Moriaty more as the protagonist, but I will also admit that Light makes a complex and entertaining antagonist. This show is quite underrated, too, so I hope one day it'll receive as much recognition as Death Note...if not, maybe more :))
I am truly in love with Moriarty the patriot (I read the manga i didn't watched the anime...) and I agree on the fact that Light and William are nothing alike, because Light becomes troughout the show a megalomaniac and gets carried away in his search for justice, while William always sticks to his principles... but that's what makes Light's character so amazing, it's his developpment ! And William is a good person, but we come back to the timeless question : does the end justifies the means ? That's a question that has no anwser, the people who think so will obvisouly think that William is a "good guy" and the people that don't agree with it will say that he's evil... and I can't let you say that Death Note is poorly written xD This manga is a real masterpiece, and, if you read the thirteen volume where lots of things about the story are explained you will see that Ohba had not a really clear idea of the ending in mind, which enforces his genius ! He wrote the story that could end in many possible ways, but in the end, only one was inevitable. Anyway, I didn't mean to write such a paragraph xD I guess i kinda got carried away but that's it
I completely agree i love both shows immensely but if i had to choose which was better in my opinion i would chose mtp every time. As a main pov character i liked reading and watching william much more than light. Mtp was just more fun to watch/read and didn't feel as rushed or forced especially the characters. I found in death note some of the character's interactions and relationships felt very forced mostly L and light especially after the yotsuba arch but mtp never once had that problem for me. Even after sherlock found out abt william they're interactions and chemistry stayed as naturally gay as ever. Another thing is the plans in mtp feel more complicated and the way sherlock unravels them doesn't feel like he's in on something or assuming things randomly which is a problem i noticed with death note that's more prominent with near. i feel like some of his "deductions" had no evidence for being true from near's point of view which is something i don't hear a ton of people talking about. it's kinda interesting to me because when i was reading the manga those baseless deduction on near's part almost made me stop reading it completely the only thing that made me finish it was a curiosity about how it would end. omg this was way longer than i anticipated and probably really messy but ya mtp>death note in my opinion
I do agree that maybe in a different life, Moriarty and Holmes would've been friends, maybe even great friends. I do hope this anime and manga will get the recognition it deserves!!! I LOVE IT AND CAN'T WAIT FOR S2 TO FINISH (currently waiting for E4)!!!!!!
I highly recommend the manga as well!! The anime was great but it missed some of the nuances that the manga explored (the morality of killing for a “just” purpose, William’s guilt, his and Louis’s “selfishness”for each other. the responsibility that Albert feels and takes, Fred’s “purer” motives, Albert and Moran’s perspective as military men, etc) I thought the anime was great but it’s a little broad-stroke in tackling the central issues of the story (and it also skipped Moran’s backstory and Fred’s self-initiated mission so there’s that) But the mv is gORGEOUS tho thank you so much for making it!!
Woah, the way you describes the manga makes it sounds so interesting! Many people have already reccommended me the source material, but I haven't got time to check it out yet -- Your comment, however, really stands out and sells it. Now I'm intrigued of how well the manga can delve into the more psychological aspects. Tysm for letting me know! :DD Glad you enjoy the vid
This is super creative! I love the little pause when William lights up his cigarette and the scene selection is surprisingly well thought out considering the length of the video and the little material you had to work with. Going straight to my favorites!!
Liam and Sherly would get along splendidly with Fyodor and Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs. Like, finding someone at a similar intelligence level to yourself, that’s something that all 4 would bond over. And Vanitas from Case Study of Vanitas would get along well with them all- Just thinking it makes me want a 3 way crossover. Maybe add in Black Butler cuz Lords of Crime and all. Plus, setting-wise, only Black Butler and Moriarty are in the same setting, so this kinda story is doable. Both had their own Jack the Ripper arc, but a good storyteller could make it work. The ideas are running, ima go write this down before I forget anything
