Gideon Rachman, chief foreign affairs columnist at the Financial Times, has just published a new book about autocrats, so Ian Bremmer puts him on the spot on GZERO World.
Which one appeals to you the most?
"That is difficult. I wouldn't say ... I'm running desperately through my head," says Rachman, before settling on one autocrat he's not a fan of but concedes is at least "an interesting figure."
Clues: He leads a very populous country, comes from humble beginnings, and Rachman believes he's not personally corrupt like other strongmen.

I don’t get it. Why are they calling Modi authoritarian. Modi has been coming to power with genuine support from people through Elections.

In what way is Mr. Modi an authoritarian? I’d love to be educated. I am not a Hindu nationalist, and politically oppose him. BUT I am struggling to see evidence of AUTHORITATIAN actions. I think this is the case of a white Christian man (men?) opposing a brown skinned ethnic leader who speaks not Harvard or Chicago.

It's not just Modi himself, it's the party. The BJP scares me. Something sinister seems to be developing in India, especially towards muslims. I don't claim to be an expert in Indian politics, it's unbelievably complex, and I know the opposition is extremly corrupt, but some of the things that leak trough lead me to believe that the BJP not only condones but somewhat promotes a toxic anti-muslim culture which can turn really violent on a dime. I love India, and I really hope I'm wrong on this one.

@@danceteras2884 sure, I can see that. If you know how many (Hindu) good friends are upset with me just because of this … HOWEVER, this conversation seems to be about what’s happened. That’s where I struggle. Why is it that Donald and Boris and Tony and Bill, the “good ol boys”, are innocent till shortly after proven guilty”, and Mr. Modi is castigated for presumed perfidies, with no need seen for a proof.
Here is why I am pushing this question … one, the liberal intelligentsia (of which I hope I am a member) needs to police it’s own intellectual honest.
Second- I believe India’s soiled and sweaty democracy has something of value to impart to the Jeffersonian-Westminster synthesis. That this is not just a stylistic revolution, but a transformative potential contribution to the privilege-driven systems of the west. I believe incorporating elements of the Indian system will inure the western systems against Trumps and LePenn’s.

My opinion, authoritarian is the best choice to manage the country, instead of the western democracy. Don’t forget, inside of nowadays Chinese authoritarian there has been the effective and efficient democracy, which mainly focus on the problem solving and the positive outcome, instead of those colorful and eye-catching formalities.

History tells, if you check all nowadays prosperous industrial countries you can find out that all of them had no democracy at all in their early stages of successful development, except their dictatorship. For example, during USA industrialization no woman were allowed to vote. Even most white men had no voting right and they were also not eligible to participate in any decision making. In some countries even no party was allowed. American black people had no any political right, they couldn’t vote until 1965. All country’s decisions were made by only a small group of white men. Not only USA did so, European countries also had similar process. In Asia Japan, S Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong did so as well.

Pandemic fatalities in all “democratic” countries have given us the most bloody lessons, which also prove that western democracy is the most worst management of the country, instead of authoritarian.
