the kind of horror fans lowrez describes perfectly mirror the kinds of animation fans I hate. the diehard fans nowadays of any given genre just consume anything aslong as it relates to whatever they claim to be a fan of, regardless of quality.

Always just makes me think of that bit from the John Ritter movie "Stay Tuned", he's channel surfing and ends up on the prison show called "Thirtysomething To Life".
Documentaries are given the same unearned gravitas as printed books, which makes it easier for them to peddle horseshit. It is impossible for cinema to be factual or objective. I mean the form is incapable of that no matter whose hands it's in. It can only make an emotional argument. The potential of documentaries is to play with the fourth wall in the way that pro wrestling does. Reality television is probably the documentary in its least harmful form because everyone watching Jersey Shore knows it's crap. Michael Moore fans don't know that. They think they're learning.
Horror directors only have to barely try and Shudder subscriber TerrorThreads t-shirt people will praise it to the moon so why would they actually put genuine effort into anything?
Thanks for taking the bullet for us on this one. I was genuinely curious about it. There's such a dearth of quality horror these days, especially when it comes to theatrical, that sometimes I want to be lied to - I want to believe all the good reviews and word of mouth and go to the cinema to see something that'll be worth the money and time. But then, like here, I look at the trailer and like you I see the word "Shudder" open it up and I just can't ignore that. Then the actual trailer finishes and nothing in it looks good to me. And then like Hans mentions, the unanimous critical praise - another red flag. And then I see this review and I'm glad I went with my gut. On a somewhat related tract: Any plans to do the First Omen? That's another one: nothing in the trailer looks good to me but everything I'm seeing and reading says that it's great - so I vacillate back and forth whether to go see it. I'd like to believe that it's good but rationally I just can't see it.

You took the words right out of my mouth in regards to Late Night with the Devil, though I think you were far too charitable with your two-star rating. This is a 1-star movie at best and absolutely deplorable at worst. Nothing about this movie is unique or profound. All of it is just tropes recycled from other horror movies. Even the station ID on the show looks like it was ripped off from the ABC logo. As for the talk show host, there is no way in hell he would’ve rivaled Johnny Carlson, because with someone as devoid of charisma as him, he would’ve been CANNED 8 episodes in and scrubbed from the public subconscious.
I think the problem is horror fans are so used to shit, and so loyal to it, that anything that doesn't totally suck ass is held out to be a Botticelli. Friday 13th, for example, they are objectively terrible but I still love them for some reason and they are classics. So if Friday the 13th is a classic, anything well produced, half decent acting, score and plot is then, relatively speaking, a master piece
