      Hello
I bought it, and is great, i'm learning a lot.
I have a question for you:
Why not use a sand filter after the S.L.O filter?
I think it would keep the bio filter and the growing beds cleaner. But sand filter dont seem to be common in aquaponics, why?

G'day Rob we have been learning a lot from your vids and are looking forward to more of them. We purchased some uniseal's from you and almost have all the parts to start a new aquaponics build our question is what is the best way for top up water? rain water or degassed tap water. Cheers mate and thanks for sharing your knowledge Steve & Alicia.

I know you answered this question for me in the comments on another video but I'd love to see a broader answer and maybe info on sump tank sizing and calcs. I have a few friends building systems and this is almost always a place they come unstuck.

What cant you grow in aquaponics?

    • @dna3930
      @dna3930 4 місяці тому

Well, that is a great and deep question with variables.
Depends on money snd sapce, time willing to wait for things to grow.
Depends on if you are doing it for survival purposes or to make a business from.
I have a small in house system i started 2 years ago.
Have some crazy things happening in life and some crazy things in my aquaponics system.
I started out with gold fish in the system. Then added crawfish. Crawfish same scientific family as roaches and lobster.
Essentially, it is what.you want to raise, brread and grow.
One thing for raising and breading, make sure the species is legal to growin your demographic region!

I have two questions if you don't mind))
1 - Have you tried or researched using crustaceans instead of or as part of fish system? What do you think about it?
2 - What do you think about using human or animal urine as a nutrient solution (so called peeponics/urinoponics?)
Thanks a lot for your videos, big fan))

Heya Rob. Long time listener, first time caller. For a lot of reasons, first of which I'm in a studio apartment going to school, I'm not in a position to actually have an aquaponic setup, but it's in my mind for property when I'm making the medium bucks after graduation. I'm also a bit of a permaculturist and sort-of resent the idea of using plastic in my setup. I'll probably get over it as I do with all of my other plastic bits and bobs constantly floating around me, but still.
Is it possible to make an entire aquaponic setup using, say, shaped glazed concrete or some more "natural" (I know, concrete isn't natural), durable material, have you ever seen or heard of such a thing? Obviously things like pump and battery notwithstanding- although if I find a place with a stream with a nice height differential I think it would be cool to try to use that as the primary power source.
Thanks for your inspiring work, rob.

Finally got around to watching! Hey!
    Oh I have a question.
What are you planning on doing differently when you set up the new systems now you’ve got less space restrictions and what considerations have changed compared to a city block?
Also: Would do you think fish will tolerate a hydroponic solution system?
    🍻

Was that the chap that has the water leaving the greenhouse to water that section outside? If so I lost the link to the video & could never find it again.
That would have been about 8+ years ago if I remember right.

He started off using gutters and buckets that holes in the bottom with net cups in the water. Someone else got the idea of using 4 inch PVC pipe with holes drilled in it and using Walmart bags with net cups in them . I always wondered how it would work with aquaponics. He was growing corn in plastic kids swimming pools in bags set on gravel all of these had float valves to control the water height

So I started cycling my new system with goldfish. I also made a variation of Terrys gravel filter for the solids. I used some gravel off my property from a creek and when I started cycling my ammonia, and nitrites increased normally but my nitrates showed up earlier than I expected(I guessed that bacteria was already present on the river rock). So I put some sacrificial plants in to use up some nitrates. Then the ammonia and nitrites dropped like they should, but my nitrates have left as well. It’s been 4-5 weeks of cycling.
If nitrite and ammonia are low and fish are eating and healthy, does that mean I don’t have enough fish for the plants I have??? My system is 400-450 gallons I only have like 15 goldfish and 36 cuttings in the system so far

How can you grow potatos and sweet potatos in aquaponics?
How can you grow fruit bearing bushes in aquaponics? Such as grapes, blackberries, etc.
Can crabs, lobsters or other crustaceans live in the bottom of a fish tank and eat any fish food that falls to the bottom of the tank?
How do you correct nutrient deficiencies such as low calcium?

My ground water is high in arsenic ( about a point or two above recommended drinking level) is that a problem for fish or will I need to use RODI water for a system?

Are there any concerns of microplastics being present in the fish that we rear for consumption due to the use of K1 and other plastic filter media?

    • @bulwarkofthebeaten9239
      @bulwarkofthebeaten9239 3 місяці тому

I am considering switching to ceramic rings and clay balls. But K1 is the only material that I know that can be used in fluidised media systems.
