In this match, I play someone from my club who has a weird tomahawk serve.
When I first arrived at the club and was still newer to the table tennis scene, I remember I couldn't return this guy's serve and got owned by him during open play around 1.5 years ago lol.
In this match, I was able to get a little bit of redemption from that first time I played the guy in this single elimination match for U1800.
This match is at the 2024 Butterfly SPTTC April Open in Bellevue, Washington.

I really like your execution of your topspin…it kept you in the games despite your trouble with his side spin serves. Even though some of your returns were weak, he couldn’t capitalize on them which offset his “weird serves”. For whatever it’s worth, I too have trouble with that type of service, so I don’t feel too bad when I see a good player like you struggle with it. Great work and progress and thanks for sharing!

Thanks man - appreciate the kind words! Need to just practice serve receive against side spin serves

Yeah his forehand topspin is amazing, its consistent and spinny.

Technically his serve was illegal... (not toss high enough). But good for you I think you handled it pretty well. I would probably try soft lifting his serve to this backhand side. (Soft lift, not loop. You can do it with some open angle) That side spin would reverse back and bounce weirdly on the table.

Thanks - that's a good call with the open paddle angle lift. I need to learn to just open against that serve with loop

@@musclepong if it's sidespin topspin, right angle a bit more down than when looping backspin, and drive forward with little bit of lift motion to carry ball forward with topspin. If it's underspin sidespin, just do a loop as you do for heavy underpsin

No disrespect to Eduard, but he has basically 1 serve and can't attack the 3rd ball effectively. The main reason of serving is to either get an ace or control the flow of the point, but it seems that when you just blocked his serve he struggled to loop the 3rd ball (or attack it in any other way). He has a good ranking so he must be good, don't know if he had a bad day or if people can'r usually return his serve.

Your opponent’s serve isn’t going up sufficiently most of the time. He’s dropping his hand as opposed to throwing up the ball. Seems innocent though…

Yeah I don't think he plays many USATT tourneys, usually just see him at open play

Its not a weird serve but a popular serve. its a tomahawk serve

    • @musclepong
      @musclepong  26 днів тому

Not very popular at my club, only a handful of people use it

@@musclepong you might want to ask your coach to teach you a basic overview of the most popular types of serves and how to detect which is topsin and what is underspin and al the other spin variations so you don't end up giving players points right off their serve, especially when you push a topspin serve and the push is given to the opponent easy to smash.

Looks just like any other tomahawk serve. Sets him up real well but he had 0% chance of cashing out on it. Man, 1570 USA is really weak. There’s another guy, Limitless, who struggles to get 1550 and he plays 3 times better.

1550 TTR is 300-400 pts better than 1550 USATT.

1500 TTR is significantly better than 1500 USATT. About 300 pts better on average.

1400-1500 is the median rating in USATT rating system

Looks like any other illegal serve that's 1/3 legal toss-height. Even Emmanuel Lebesson throws it higher.
