  • previous version of this video had ausio drop out at the 10 min mark, this one has the audio fixed
Building an FPGA version of the EMS Spectre (also called the Spectron) video synth. Only 14 were ever made.
Here I'm looking at software control and also showing some of the first patches from the digital matrix (1/3 of the actual final unit)

I bought the Tang Nano 9K with the specific intention of using it for video synthesizers, and was disappointed to find how little information there was about doing such a thing. Lo! Here you are. Do you know if my board is vastly underpowered for this sort of thing? It's a very cheap FPGA with power and an HDMI port and some IO pins. I was just going to have it do weird things with blanking and sending patterns to analog hardware I've made, but you're doing the whole kit and kaboodle aren't you?

i was looking at the Tang Nano 9k, but I had a lot of problems with the build setup, and getting that to work. I'm mostly using Xilinx cos that's what I know and there is a little more support then with Sipeed/Gowin.
maybe there is lots of support and documentation but if so its not in English 🥲

speaking of fpgas and video in general, if you are trying to make HDMI video, that's maybe just below medium difficulty. Making composite video is a bit harder, but not impossible. and then doing things like mixing multiple channels of analoge video is VERY HARD, sadly.
