Cosmic Journeys - Life: Destiny or Chance?

  • Are the universe and its physical laws so fine-tuned that the rise of life is inevitable? Or is life a fluke, a lucky roll of cosmic dice? We look for the answer in the rise of two important components of life, dust and water. It turns out that the universe is laden with water, a byproduct of dust kicked out and spread around by supernovas and black holes.

    Most of these videos are pretty good, but this one is really good. If, after seeing this, you're wondering why we haven't all been enslaved by sentient aliens, it probably means that (i) FTL is impossible, and (ii) sentient life at our level takes a similar amount of time to develop on other planets, and we are in the lead, or (iii) we aren't yet developed to any level where we are worth bothering.

      Chances are life is fairly abundant throughout the universe, though 99.99999% of all species probably go extinct before reaching a level where they are colonizing other planets in large numbers, which makes the chances of meeting any of them extremely slim at best.

      There are more options than the ones you listed. Here is another option: advanced civilizations have learned to travel faster than light and control their biology and environment to such a degree that their intelligence skyrocketed and their need for resources minimized. And considering the universe is so old, and considering the high likelihood that many other more advanced races have existed for a very long time, a kind of social order among various advanced races has been established, and that social order includes non-aggression against other sentient beings. Why? Because technology, science and the abundance of resources in the universe which can be used for most efficiently in utilization.

      Magnesium So how much FTL exactly? It jacks up the probability of contact, but I'm suggesting that it is still not fast enough because we still seem locally alone, even if we are universally crowded.

      There is really no gain for enslaving mankind, in my opinion extraterrestrial life has had the ability to reach us in the past, but never to enslave us. I can imagine watching mankind with advanced technology from space would be quite amusing, and we are only a threat to ourselves.

    • @Impatient_Ape
      @Impatient_Ape 10 років тому +1

      Magnesium Quantum entanglement is not a mechanism for sending information faster than light. Anyone who claims this is true doesn't actually understand it. So no, this article does NOT suggest that FTL is possible. The experiment attempts to measure the time delay between the results of a measurement at one location and the correlated outcome at another location. The whole idea of a "speed" here is all about getting eyballs on the article and it toally misrepresents the fact that absolute correlation that entanglement produces does not require the transmission of any signal from one location to another.

    I could watch these videos over and over again. In fact, I do. This one is particularly striking for me, speaking on the potential prevalence of life throughout the universe. It's astounding how much water exists in some of the most desolate regions. I'm excited at the thought of intelligent beings on other planets contemplating our existence. What a feeling it is to essentially *know* that, based on current observations and calculations, there are other planets with life like us. Cities, technology, spacecraft. Why wouldn't there be *somewhere*?

  • @johanniral8116

    the fact that we, the humans, are able to reason and think deeply as to where we are all and what things are surrounding us, can make a certain way to see our existence, but there are uncertainties that all of us are never going to decipher, such as, why are we all here and what is the purpose of everything that exists? this questions can be easily refuted by the religious or philosophical perspective, which can make a certain presumption.
    for my point of view, everything what the religion or philosophy states as true about the meaning of life, is just presumptions or just hypothetical issues, just that and nothing else. since the meaning of everything that exists and its purpose for the existence shall never be answered, there shall be only presumptions

    Unfortunately our destiny is left with little chances for survival. Unless we start protecting fragile balance of life or we will be gone from the surface of this planet. Maybe universe if full of water and all of sorts of life supporting compounds but nowhere else than on Earth we can find such a spectacular miracle of life. All made by the balance based on which it was created.

  • @CyriilB

    I think it's purely chance. The universe may appear to be fine tuned, but then again before we understood evolution we appeared to be intelligently designed.
    Even if certain conditions of the universe have to be just so for us to exist that doesn't mean it's on purpose. Also, some of the conditions might need to be this way for *our kind* of life to exist.
    Sometimes you'll have two completely separately purchased objects that have nothing to do with one another and they happen to work wonderfully together. Does that mean it was part of some grand plan? No, it's a happy coincidence.
    We are the universe's way of pondering it's own existence.

    • @I_Am_Midnight-i
      @I_Am_Midnight-i 9 років тому +5

      RealityFacade Macro-evolution is far from being even considered scientific so your first point utterly fails. As for your “chance” nonsense, that also fails since the probability of the universe to get the constants right for life to exist is less than 1 in 10^300. Utterly impossible. The best explanation is that life and the universe is the product of a designer.

    • @jmitterii2
      @jmitterii2 6 років тому +4

      Based on all current observations and models, it appears you're likely right. It's pure chance. Which explains a lot of philosophical questions; why should their be suffering, why are natural phenomena often not conducive to our existence; most of the universe is empty space that kills macro life, etc.
      It's odds. And with such a big universe with arrangement as we are, such events become inevitable at a yet unknown probability distribution.

      @@I_Am_Midnight-i
      Only those pushing a religious ideology say macro evolution isn't scientific. Actual scientists disagree with you.
      Secondly your point about the odds is irrelevant.
      The odds only matter if you start with the assumption that life had to exist.
      If life is just a byproduct of the constants being the way they are then it makes total sense. Life exists because of the constants not in spite of them. Its logical.
      What's impossible is telling me something existed eternally outside the system of all known reality. Then using the most inefficient, wasteful convoluted method possible created the entire universe for the pleasure of one tiny species that have been around for only 1% of known time. Then made sure to endow his creation with all the traits, biological urges and character flaws that would piss said creator off forcing him to condemn and torture for eternity the vast majority of those he went through all the trouble of creating the universe for. That is what seems impossible.

    Considering just how vast the universe is, I don't find it surprising at all that life has evolved here on earth. The conditions were favorable. And while life may be rare, I don't believe we are the ONLY life in the universe. It's a very big place. Surely there are other stars with planets in the habitable zone with the right conditions. People are always saying how all these conditions had to be absolutely perfect, but, really, I think it would be far more unlikely if life had NOT occurred, with the billions of galaxies, trillions of planets, and billions of years.

    I always wonder, how scientists are so sure about the spectral readings they get from incredibly large distances. As in, talking about that 12B LY distant quasar and the amount of water in it. Can this result not be influenced by all the matter that is in between us and that quasar? What if there's load of water in between, that we see right through and get the spectral reading from and none in the actual quasar? Maybe this is stupid remark, because I don't have an excellent idea of how that may work, but it seems logical to me to assume that at such distances, there'll be LOADS of material in our line of sight, that can influence the results of spectrometer. Is there any specialist to give me an argument on this one?
    - apart from that, how can water molecules as such even exist in such violent neighbourgood as quasar is? I mean, it's as violent there as it gets in the universe, molecules should be split into ions as a result of the high energy radiation, or not?

      You've made a diagnosis without any information. The flash app is getting confused and keeps dumping the cache and switching resolutions, but it's switching so fast that it never has time to load anything, so it gives you the little load animation for a while then says "an error occurred." Like, I'll see the bar load a few pixels, then it will discard that and try to load another resolution. By that point it's too late to manually choose a resolution, not gonna work. My internet service is fine, plus I just upgraded the speed. Google is not immune to errors ya know. But usually a refresh works so meh whatever.

      I have that problem as well. I'm on a crappy wifi network that doesn't even come close to maintaining regular bandwidth speeds. I just click the gear and select the resolution I want, then it stays with that resolution until its over. Its annoying that I have to do that with every video... but its a solution for now.

      UA-cam has rotating malfunctions. I'm on UA-cam nearly every day, & most of the time at least one UA-cam feature isn't working properly.
      However, when I watched this video on Saturday 9/20, I didn't have a problem with pausing it, not even when watching it full-screen - which is the ONLY way to watch SpaceRip videos, imo.

    Did he say 8.8 billion stars? I wonder where he got that number. Definitely a configurative theory. I am a Space Scientist and many Astronomers, Astrophysicist, and Planetologist such as myself calculate different hypothetical guesses of the Stars and the planets all the time. This is based off our equipment, computer simulations and mathematical modeling. But to be honest no person on earth actually knows how many stars are in the Milky way galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy,Triangulum Galaxy or other Galaxies in this Universe near us. I and my research colleagues say "A new Star is Born everyday,just like a baby!" So we can only speculate theorectical assumptions with the use of Science at this point. Unless an Alien comes forward with a calculating device that gives us an accurate and factual head count of stars,planets,and moons. Nevertheless this was a great informative and visual Doc!

      Sorry. Physics and chemistry are universal. Consider, LIFE requires stored/encoded INFORMATION to succeed and reproduce. DNA. Among ALL the elements, ONLY carbon can chemically encode information; silicon is a vast, distant second. And to allow carbon to encode gigabytes of information in molecules requires liquid water. I'm sorry, chemistry and physics disallows lava life and solar ghosts and nonsense like that.

    Without bringing Religion into the question/answer I often wonder "WHY" there is anything at all? Using a 'creator' is intellectually lazy even if there is a God and the Bible is true. Even using God as an answer is intellectually lazy because WHY does God exist. The big question remains, even if it is an absolute fluke that Life exists at all. Since Life DOES exist then our human curiosity will always ask "WHY" and also, what was the first cause?? Tomas Aquinas asks the age old question that we all must ask, whether atheist or believer. What was the "First Cause" that set everything in motion??

    • @thedeviluknow
      @thedeviluknow 9 років тому

      Why must there be a reason? I agree that it is an interesting question but I think the most likely explanation is that there isn't one.

    • @randy109
      @randy109 9 років тому

      A Phillips True. Perhaps when we understand quantum physics a lot better we can figure out that "first cause" even if there isn't an answer to "why" we ALL want to know the answer to the biggest question there is. What was the "first cause" that sent everything into motion? Where did the first 'thing' come from, whether it was just sheer energy of a singularity or even a creator (other than a God or gods).

    I don't mean to sound condescending here, but i'm pretty sure that the idea of life being possibly abundant throughout the universe or in other universes is nothing new, and there have been many theories explaining this possibility for years now - and theories which are explained far better than what is said in this documentary. I only say this because it seems to be a new concept to a lot of us, dominating this comment section (besides the same old, tired 'god vs cosmic evolution' debate). Though that debate is important, it always degrades to 'faith vs belief', which gets us nowhere. But i think the main point of this video is to suggest that life isn't possible unless our universe is one of many - and in many universes, life simply isn't possible, yet here in our universe, life works. Why? Well, this video seems to suggest one possibility is because our universe is *meant* to support life, and that line of thinking is old news. The video almost seems to be saying that in order to fine-tune the universe for life, there must first be a creator, or at least some kind of sentient energy which has the ability to fine-tune creation to support any possibility. To anyone wondering whether our universe is fine-tuned for life as opposed to life being fine-tuned for this universe, i say: why does it matter? The same theories exist in both lines of thought. The possibility of a supreme creator exists in either theory, and also the possibility of pure luck exists in either theory. So why is there a need to fight like little pricks over it? You can't argue with faith, and remember that there is a big difference between believing presented facts as opposed to simply putting faith in something which is supported by nothing factual. Yet both will inspire the same type of comments which spark these fruitless debates. And yes, these debates are important. Until you start shitting on each other and become uppity snobs about it. Then the conversations become pointless because the willingness to at least try to see eye to eye on even the most basic thing is lost. This is also youtube, where logical debate comes to die. If you are interested in the possibilities presented in this video, that's a big first step. Take the next step by skipping the hateful comments.

    I have my own little vision-theory thing brought to you by your basic typical everyday no big scholar layman type dude. But one who feels he is connected, if you know what I mean. Every one has there's. Well, I'm sure everyone has seen what samples of our ocean waters look like magnified and everything that's in it all the microbes and various life cells of all kinds. I could go a step further. Take a close look at what's all floating around in our bloodstream samples magnified. Now take a look at our vast universe and all that it contains floating and swirling around within it, sorta get where I'm going with this? What if the vast Universe was one big bloodstream or blood stream(s) of the Gods? Or, one big Cosmic ocean, or ocean(s), that They control and stir around and control from the Heavans with their big Heavenly stirring ladle from above? Adding Their various ingredients and spices in when needed. And say that what would seem like just a second or two to complete a stir revolution in our earthly human timeframe (soup or whatever) ... the same one or two second stir for the gods in the heavens would be millions of years to us. Following me? Maybe that all sounds off the wall, I don't know. Makes sense in my head. (!?)

    One cannot measure distances of greater than about 25 light-years using parallax since we don't know EXACTLY where (not only does the Earth go around the sun, the sun orbits the galactic center, etc. so determining exactly where Earth was 180 days ago is all the more difficult) the Earth was sixth months ago using the Earth's ORBIT around the sun as the base of the triangle. Just ONE light-year has an angle of ONLY 0.017 degrees already! If u think Red Shift measures/accurately gauges distances 2 distant objects, u need 2 know that red shift can b caused by tired light, (Light may lose energy naturally as it travels and remember that since light has mass, it is affected by other objects with mass. A solar sail works because light has momentum and therefore mass.) objects moving @ right angles to us, & when gravity is acting on an object. There's this object moving TOWARDS us that is still red-shifted!!! There's this pair of objects connected with radically different redshifts that proves the big bang wrong.
