In this video I share the top 7 mistakes players rated around 1800 are making. I will share tips and tricks on how to get better at chess and improve your chess rating quickly and push past 1800 to reach 1900,2000, and beyond. I give some tips on tactics mistakes, endgames, and more! Please comment below and let me know if you've passed 1800 for the first time!
Excellent videos! When I was at my peak, maybe about 1600 (this was 50 years ago) I had read a good number of books and practiced quite a bit but I could see that to get much better I would REALLY have to study quite a bit. And I thought I already HAD studied quite a bit, but to get to 1800+ you have to become pretty obsessive. And that's about where I lost interest.
bro you're like 150 years old :O

I'm 2000 level. I would love to see 2000 level please.
same
Yeah...
Same here
Same
It's the same. Just git gud.
Id love to see a 2000 rating video of this.
I’m stuck at 1800 and a prime culprit of each of these. Thank you for these amazing videos!!
The first one hit me hard
how long have you been stuck at 1800?
Those are very useful stats to see. Thanks for posting
Your vids are amazing man, please keep it up!
Thanks a lot, Dragisa!
maybe a video on Defenses against all the traps in the 10 first moves
I think the big thing is to study end games as well as be honest with how prepared you are in openings. Have a master data base and checking out positions with that and an engine when positions are not in master games will get you positions you are at least comfortable and saves time on the clock. when I was climbing 1600 to 1800 I could study just a bit sum it up and make it up was I went but getting beat by 1900 players over and over again I need to be more honest with where I'm at in chess.
Your content is great. It is straightforward and matter of fact... Thank you!
Great tips! I'm totally agree with u. I'm 1900 but I've been making the same mistakes, mainly endgames.
Keep this series going .. very interested in this!
why you stuck at 2500 fide rating..
hope one day we all gonna need that kinda video ..😂😂😂
Lol one day Saitama!
I was just telling someone that getting up to around 1800 I feel like I'm playing much much tougher players than I ever have before. I'm in my mid 30's, I work 50+ hour weeks, it's tougher for me to put in more time for chess and for the first time it feels like this might be where I plateau for good. I'll have to schedule some more time for tactics and reviewing my rook endgames I suppose!
One of the mistakes that average players make is being unable to exploit the weakness points of the beginners when they play them. For example , it is so common that beginners develop their queen before the knights and the bishop. The average player should find a way to develop their pieces forcing the beginner player to move his queen again and gain tempo on him. And thus making him pay.
Really enjoyed this one
I wonder if many of those tactical errors are really just a sign of strategic errors that lead to positions where tactical missteps abound.
Can you do a video series on middle game tactics? I've seen you cover openings and endings, but I need to improve in between those two.
I think my mistakes are mostly due to playing too fast and not thinking ahead enough, I'm too impatient if I'm not carefull
im at 1700 and havent studied, i watch alot of chess however. how can i learn theory? is there a simple way or do i just search for common oppenings and look at youtube videos of those openings. is there a website or something that has this stuff? i might have to get some books or something ig
Did you join Lichess, its free and has common openings and free endless puzzles.
OPENINGS AND MIDDLEGAMES AND ROOK ENDGAMES
I cant really get over 1900 Always around 1885-1910 any tips?
How did you select the 100 games you looked at, by the way?
I just used lichess's game filter for certain rating ranges and time control of around 15 min per game. Then it was mostly just random from there.
I'm currently stuck at about 1800
how long have you been stuck at 1800? im trying to get there myself
@@ericzhang6063 I was stuck at 1800 for about 3 months and my elo kept swerving around between 1780 to 1880 but on october 25th I hit 1900 for the first time. Over the course of the last few weeks I've been rapidly changing my opening reportiore from Italian and e5/d5 with black to the Scotch Gambit with white and the Caro-Kann Defense/ Old Benoni Defense with the black pieces. Playing tricky, "sideline" openings still works on my level although most people don't fall for simple traps. Improving your tactical vision is a good thing to start with if you're like 1200-1600 and opening chioce and theory is going to be important after that. Yesterday I managed to cross the 2000 mark which made me really happy but I've also noticed that my opening knowledge is very very poor. As white I don't know a solid response to, the French Defense, the Modern Defense, Owen's Defense, Alekhine's Defense, the Pirc Defense and the Nimzowitsch Defense so I just play natural looking moves. This is a huge problem for me which I'm going to tackle next. I hope this is somewhat helpful
Which 1800 is he talking about here? Lichess 1800? 1800 ELO? There is a HUGE difference between those ratings (200-300 points I think).
This is why Bobby Fisher hated chess. Too much theory. Call of Duty is better and more fun to play
1900 plz
I'm only rated 1088 but I found this incredibly useful.
what are u now?

These are very good and unique videos. I have not seen any channels with similar content. There are so many good chess channels out there but I imagine you'll start to gain a lot of subs if you keep up this kind of content.
Really appreciate the feedback, Bill! I was thinking about doing another series very similar to this except focusing on specific openings. For example, "Top mistakes players make in the Queen's Gambit opening" or something along those lines.
@@ChessVibesOfficial I'm no content expert but that sounds like a really good idea. An idea I've had for a long time is that a streamer needs to play about 20 games in one opening while explaining the moves and ideas and combine them all into one video. To me that's a super helpful way to learn an opening. You'd see what common mistakes people make against an opening and how to exploit them. If there was a video of a master crushing 20 people in the Evan's Gambit I would probably watch it 100 times.
Yeah great idea, Bill. I imagine maybe we don't see many of those videos because you never know what your opponent will play, so to gather up several games with the same opening could be time consuming. But I think this may be a series I take up very soon cause I think it would really help players as well. So if you had to pick one to start with, your vote would be the Evans Gambit?
@@ChessVibesOfficial That would just be for selfish reasons because it's my favorite opening. I also play the French defense so I'd love one on that. I hate playing the exchange French so it'd be interesting to see how a really good player makes it not so boring.
I'm a professional videographer/editor so if you get a 3 hour stream of blitz videos and send it to me I'd be happy to collect all the Evans Gambit games and French defense games and put them into their own videos for you.
Wow thanks for that offer. I'm not really a french player myself but I do like the Evans Gambit so if I get some footage of that I will definitely keep you in mind!
These kind of channels with 50-60K subs but great teaching content (there are a few others out there) are way better for improvement than the more popular twitch streaming channels with hundreds of thousands or millions of subs.
Your videos are very instructive and helpful. Keep up the great work!
Just turned to 1800 yesterday, and that vid is useful. Thanks.
Wow you are old
@@alexanderjoukov7961 🤣
how long did it take u to get to 1800?
@@ericzhang6063 I didn't study openings, middle game or endings professionally.. and still have no time for it.. so it took me maybe 10 years, by watching playing techniques and improvising.. which is not recommended.
Endgame is more like 40% imo. I reached 2100 before starting studying the endgame a few months ago... But I was and am strong in tactics. That being said, many players focus way too much in the openning and forget about tactics and endgame. Wrong decision
yep, interested in 2000 level 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Nelson, great content. I was wondering what your thoughts on how often you should be playing a week and with what time controls to slowly get better for a busy person. I wish I have more time to play chess but I noticed that my rating is stagnant (I'm 1000 blitz, 1350 rapid and 1680 classic, 2300 puzzles)
I remember playing against an 1800 which blundered his queen.
Dude, I've checked out several chess channels on UA-cam, and yours is the only one I keep coming back to. Your explanations are clear and concise, your presentation is more entertaining, and the tips you give have definitely made me a better player. I'm unrated, but if I were In convinced my rating would've increased by at least 100 since I've started watching your videos. Thanks for the great content!
Hi Nelson, really good content and very well explained, thank you. I'm 1400 FIDE rating and still do appreciate Top x mistake 2000
pretty sure 1800 is very close to 1400 fide
I just reached 2100 rapid on lichess. My weakness is definitely the endgame
Congrats man! I'm 2030 rapid, and yeah the endgame is deffo the hardest! I'm doing my endgame workout!
My way of studying is watching endgame videos and solving endgame puzzles on lichess
I haven't hit 1800 but I'm around mid to high 1700, do you know how I can work on tactics effectively as I'm doing puzzles
Chess coach are so confident in teaching they can even teach you how to cross 3000 rating when their own rating is 2500🤣🤣
@chessvibes when you get time can you please do a 2000 video?
found your channel today, subscribed and decided to spend 3 hours watching these tips xd
Welcome aboard!
I need one for 1600 players. 😂
On Lichess I am 1900 Blitz and 2100 Rapid and there is definitely a lot of room for improvement lol, please make another video
I just got to 1800 so this is going to be very useful
What was the time control for these games?
your teachings are awesome sir!!
Glad you like them!
with that first tactical error I feel that very often people don't put enough effort in thinking of quality moves by the opponent. they think of a "great" tactic where they play all good moves and their opponent blunders every move.
Your video is 1 year old but it is relevant to me at this point. I am stuck at 1800, difficult to get through, accuracy is already above 85%, almost no blunders but always lose due to poor endgames.
Great video but you could just count the number of mistakes individually instead of mistakes in games and actually make the numbers add up to 100. Chess is your strong suit, not math lol. Sorry if this was offensive, just playing around. Keep it up.
I am 1850.
How is it possible for 1800 to make a mistake? These players are just crushing.
Nice 👍
Thanks!
Interesting how blunders and tactics are the common themes throughout 600 all the way to 1800. It pays to works on tactics.
Hmm. For my practice I had thousands of tactical puzzles and some endgame study planned, so I guess I have the right plans.
Yep, sounds like a good route!
Very good series!
Finally, now I, a 550, can beat 1800’s
Rename yourself to Ruy. You are going to be Ruy Lopez :)
I just broke 1700 from using the suggestions in this video! Thank you, Nelson! I'm a big fan, hope the fam is good and your health continues to improve.
im 2183 make one for 2100 im stuck help
People say 1800 are top 1%.
Nelson say "7 mistakes they make"
Hi Nelson! I'm stuck at 1900 and would love to see the 1900 or 2000 version of this video :)
I love watching your videos
Im 1801 now recently hit it , and now im here to learn and reach 2000!
So what are some good books to make me avoid those mistakes?
Thank you to launch this video in youtube.
Just found your channel and have been loving the content. When you say "1800", do you mean 1800 USCF, 1800 chess.com blitz, 1800 chess.com rapid, 1800 lichess blitz, 1800 lichess classical, etc..? I feel like all of those 5 ratings I just mentioned have pretty different meanings. Thanks!
Good question! I took these games from lichess rapid games and added a couple hundred points to make up for some of the lichess inflation. (So 1900-2000 lichess rapid games)
@@ChessVibesOfficial Thanks a lot! Cheers!
That makes sense. I am close to 2100 at licens.org, but around mid 1800 and there is also where my ELO is. Slow time controls. More than 60 minutes. For actual rapid games I am weaker, maybe around 1700.
You deserve 1m subscribers
what was the time control ? awesome concept series would love to see it for each category.
Rapid
@@ChessVibesOfficial Rapid explains why the quality of the play seemed so far below 1800 to me, even for lichess.org. That said as I stated above I hope this small sample shown here is more indicative of the points being made than representative of the play in the 100 games overall.
What time control were most of these games? Did tactical errors still represent a plurality in slow games?
I'm stuck in the mid 1900s. Please send a time machine to pick me up.
Also, I can't crack 2000 on Lichess so another video would be welcome. ☺️
2000will be good 😊
Is these based on Lichess rating
Yes but I took ratings a couple hundred points higher to make up for lichess inflation.
U should complete the series top 10 mistakes people at the 2000 rating makes and 2200 ect
im stuck at 1800 about 1 year😩
Thanks
Stuck at 1450... Make some videos for this level...

How did you put these mistakes in "categories?" Is there a script that runs that can detect this? I am looking to do this to my games so I know what I need to work on.
It was mostly just manually looking at them and counting up how many times a certain mistake was happening. Sometimes I will use "Find All" in Excel for certain keywords and use that to speed up the process.
Sorry if I missed it in the video, but what was the time control on these games? Great content!
It was rapid games
@@ChessVibesOfficial 👍 thanks
These are AMAZING. And from a fellow hispanic, makes me proud!
I. Love your videos.
I want to take this week 's quiz.
8:36 king to d8 then to c7 on the next move can get him out of danger for a few moves, then it's figuring out if anything more can be done?
i added all of the percents and then found the percentages of the percents, calculation is about 45%, endgame is 40% and opening and time management take up about 15%… if you are struggling in this range you should probably study those in or near those proportions. example: 27 mins on calculation, 24 mins on endgame, 9 mins on opening. i am unsure how will this will work but seeing those numbers and understanding what needs the most work to improve and surpass can be very helpful.
very good video, helped me a lot
Hi Nelson thanks for the tips I really seem to struggle with the over active queen will you do a video on how to stop defending
very educational Video, thanks buddy.
I'm at 1500. I feel like I know everything, I look for discovered checks. I try to open files for discovered checks. I try to take control of the structure of the pieces, but I can't never get over 1700. I get to 1700 and I go on a losing streak l and go back 1500 then back to 1700 .. Is there a concept that allows for consistency. I usually use the London opening. I Have played tens of thousands of games but can never stay consistance.. I feel like my mid game is weak and I have a hard time knowing what's the next best move. Also I get stuck between whether I should take material or look for better positions for a checkmate..I try to do little clever stuff, but I'm looking for a solid principle that will lead to a checkmate..if anybody can help I'd appreciate it
How is your rating going now, have you discovered anything that helped? I reached 1300 without much effort, I know I need to study to get better so that is what I am doing. I got bored of the normal London system, London Jobava is more fun.
This Guy is 1200elo and giving lessons to 1800elos ?!!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!;!?!!????!!??!
I enjoy your instruction extensively. Thank you!
This is really useful
I’m relatively new to Chess. How are the ratings calculated? Also, is it super important to know all the names of the squares? I assume it helps when describing moves.
I'm late, but in case you haven't gotten an answer yet:
Ratings are based in an elo system that goes up or down depending on the difference between you and your opponent. Knowing the names of squares is useful to communicate ideas, but it is not necessary.
On that first one queen d4 is the move to play right, pinning the queen and when he takes you take back with Bishop with a check? I'm working my way through the 1000s at the moment but I need to improve making snap moves
what are snap moves ? im 1800 x)
@@purplenotred3170 where I just take without checking if it leads to bad things for me. Like sacrifices and things like that I'll just "snap" up.
I Have An Question
How Do You See Other People Game?
I use the search feature on lichess to search for certain time controls and ratings
@@ChessVibesOfficial Okey Thanks 🙂
I'm usually around 1700-1900. I typically can solve puzzles at a 2000+ level, consistency has always been my main issue. I've always found the endgame easier to navigate than the middle or opening and I've saved a lot of lost games because of it. I stopped playing chess because at this level I so often get a bad game out of the opening and I've started to understand why Bobby Fischer was always on about there being too much theory. My wife plays blitz chess on her phone all the time though! She's quite talented!
I've been stuck on 1800 for a while and found this very helpful and clarifying! Thanks!
