    Hello there, Carmen and Jackie. I wish you a beautiful year full of love and knits!
    I'm so excited about the Marie Wallin KAL. I have been trying to knit Yell forever. I started last year (after buying the kit in 2019!), and I had to rip it because I was too much off gauge. I just started over again, and my idea is to try to knit some rounds every day and having it done by the end of the year. So the KAL is perfect - it will definitely give me the push to finish! Thank you for your positivity and the joy you spread.

    Such a lovely podcast episode, girlies.. and so full of inspiration 🫶 Oh, and Carmen, if you don't wear that gorgeousness of a shawl & Instant Crush sweater, I'm totally up for buying them off you.. so in love with the colours 😘😆

    gleðilegt nýtt ár from here in Iceland, you two! lovely to check in with you this morning while I pick up and work on a sleeve I've been avoiding (my Mastiha! in Phinela worsted! need to finish and then figure out my version of the button band issue). Carmen, both the red and gold sweaters are color-amazing -- bravo on both counts. and love the recap of the year's knits, especially (oddly) the didn't-wear-so-much category -- like your Instant Crush, I made one all-over colorwork sweater this past year in insanely soft yarns that I love but never wear -- the patterning, while gorgeous to look at, just feels too busy to wear & makes me incredibly self-conscious, even though I love the colors and the fabric -- like the sweater is shouting past me, somehow. so it feels a bit ironic that I'm also very excited about the Wallin-along or whatever the KAL ends up being called -- I'll just need to choose my colors carefully to perhaps be on the more low-contrast/subtle side of things. and I think my 2025 should probably be fewer shawls, even though I love making them, as I really don't wear the large ones much at all -- I LOVE a small one I can wind tightly around my neck, but the big ones are, again more like Carmen, more like cardigans except I'd prefer to have the sleeves.

    Happy New Year! I live both of your sweaters! All of them actually. Carmen I was very sick too as my kids came from Nova Scotia and my grandkids ended up sick we had 4 emergency visits in a row and once they all left I ended up sick! I have never been that sick before in my life and I’m old! I’m just getting over it and it’s the first time I’ve ever been too sick to knit. I just sat there with my eyes closed. I couldn’t hold needles in my hands. Glad that’s over with!! Glad you are better!! Take care!!

    Oh my gosh. I placed a Sonder Yarn order two days ago, taking advantage of their 20% off sale. Sunday Morning 4-ply in Radio Flyer and Halo in Drop Dead Gorgeous. I knew they weren’t a perfect match, but I thought they’d play well together. Then I saw Carmen’s sweater in 5 o’clock Somewhere and DDG and had to have that combination! I just placed another order for the 4-ply in 5 o’clock Somewhere. Not sorry! 😂 Thanks for the inspiration!

    Caitlin’s swancho was always a swoon for me but double mohair 😱 Jackie I love it. I’ve knit double mohair a few times and I adore it. I’ve wet blocked with no issue.
    Stick everything in the freezer and voilà you’re back to being socially acceptable.
    Mohair - just use a soft bristle brush and give it a little groom (when it’s had too much wear) and it’s magic, back to new.
    Feel better Carmen 😢 thanks for the fun, Karen 🥰

    I know that sometimes you two mention there being more FOs than you could show. So I would think it's fun to hear about your favorite makes that didn't make it to the podcast!
    The flipping button band bottom: If your row gauge is often to long, I wonder if you need to pick up more stitches in the beginning and ending of the button band for for ones that are worked perpendicular to your knitting (i.e. ribbed button bands where one row is the entire length of the button band). Like your stitches are skinny and long, so when you work a skinny stitch into the side of long stitch, it causes it to pull up and flip.
    What I dislike about the Kibbe types is its subjective framed like objective. It doesn't take any of the wearers personality or preferences into account because its supposed to be this categorical thing based on your "essence", but its really just like "I think soft/round features and bodies should wear this and tall thin bodies should wear this and muscular stout bodies should wear this and its what looks best on them." But like says who? Some people feel there best when they harmonize with things like how slim, soft, round, muscular, striking etc their features are and some people feel best when they balance out those same features. Like I'm busty and I feel my best when my outfits accentuate that. But depending on the style guidance, some absolutely insist I must draw attention away from my bust, while others absolutely insist that I draw attention to my bust. And then the idea that the shape of ones body has anything to do with their personality aesthetic is wild to me (there's a component of the Kibbe typing that speaks to the person's personality, as if having sharp cheekbones says anything about someone's personality or even if they are more of a ruffles or a studs kind of person). And, the whole basis behind it is what others will like on you, instead of what you like on you, and what makes you feel your best. I think style guidance that's more focused on how to highlight or minimize specific aspects (if that's what the wearer wants) is much more useful than "you're soft so you must dress in flowy clothes that cinch in at the waist." Prescribing what elements look best on someone based on how tall they are or where they store their fat is nonsense to me. Because I agree, even if it's what's supposed to look best based on your physical characteristics, if you are uncomfortable and it clashes with who you are, it will never look better than the clothes you feel most yourself in. The fact that you don't feel comfortable will shine through and cancel out any harmony its supposed to have with your level of yin or yang.
    I haven't actually put together my make 9 yet, but it's definitely going to be more "yarn first" centered because I tend to be a more "yarn first" knitter.

  • @kristenj495
    @kristenj495 15 днів тому

    I LOVED your make nine discussion--I've been trying so hard lately to organize my knitting butterfly mind toward a more cohesive, I guess more "planned" project list, and your conversation and ideas around doing the same was just so good. Going beyond the "capsule wardrobe" concept and deeply integrating yourself--whoo, amazing. Thank you! My most worn, most favorite, most reliable and most Old Faithful is that genius Melissa's Turtledove. That pattern has worked for me in any size, with any yarn, every time. Honestly, I'll never not be knitting one. I'm getting ready to cast on my TENTH Turtledove! As always, thank you for all the inspiration. xoxo

    Hello again - saw your comments about your Mastiha and I can't resist giving more advice. The original button band as designed did a few things - it brings the whole opening "in" due to the ribbed gauge and added weight along the fronts, plus it provided closure, and the width of the band as I designed it filled in the opening, which was left wide on purpose because of the expected additional collar fabric.
    Your problem with fit is because the narrow picot edge does neither of those things - anchoring the fit, bringing in the gauge, or filling the space. I think you may be able to pull your edging off and reknit it at a smaller gauge, which would bring in the measurement across the back neck and shoulders as needed - and you can even do a couple more rows in rib before ending the edge, which may fill in the opening a little as well.
    Or, just use a shawl pin as you noted - but the shoulders may never sit the way you want, just because that's not what the body was designed to do without the work of the band. :)

      @knittingagoodyarnpodcast5765  10 днів тому

      Agh thank you so much Thea for taking the time again to weigh in! I truly feel so honoured and everything you wrote makes complete sense! Honestly, I never should have messed with the pattern bc you clearly designed it so carefully so changing things like I did obv could never have really worked! I also hope you know that I love your original pattern too (it was only as I knit and liked the wide opening that I even considered changing it). From now on I’ll stick with only making minor modifications! In the meantime, I hope a shawl pin helps (or maybe a crochet chain as one viewer suggested) bc I just can’t find the motivation to rip it out and do it again!!

    Jackie I love your idea of talisman knits and your key words for different things you want to infuse into your knitting!
    I just finished the Halibut sweater by Caitlin Hunter and I also had a lot of trouble with the yoke. The first time it turned out huge and I had to go down three sizes and do a bunch of mods. She’s got great looking patterns but just not quite the fit for me.
    I’ve done three color work sweaters in a row now and I’m just itching to cast on something with a bunch of textures and cables. I’m thinking the Three Season Cardigan by Wool & Pine.

    My goal this year is more cozy warm knits. I am moving to Scotland this summer (I'm currently in London) and although I am originally from Northern Ontario, the cold hits so different in the UK. I also want more bright colours as wearing something fun helps me when it gets dark early.

    Interestingly my favorite knits this year matched up a lot with things in this podcast lol. I usually like to knit cables, lace, or something challenging but I had several surgeries this year and didn't always have the headspace for that so I knit a couple stockinette projects that I loved making and have worn everywhere. I have also had problems with sensations this year thanks to my fibromyalgia so it was important they be soft if I was going to wear them all the time. My two favorite knits this year are 1. Halu by Caitlin Hunter which I knit in knitting for olive merino in the color snowflake and a variegated suri from kinetic knitter called crowd pleaser. It's so soft and cozy and looks like watercolors. The second thing I loved this year is the no frills cardigan by petite knit. I knit it in knitting for olive merino again and we are knitters touch me mohair. I've barely taken it off since I finished it. They are my most worn this year and my favorite knits this year.

    Always such fun to join you! When you're thinking about the knits you grad... what about multi sensory components? to what extent might your choices include colors, textures - visually as well as touch? I've notice these multi-sensory elements have been influencing me, and I'm picking up on some of those elements when you both talk about your knits... hmmm maybe it's just what I'm noticing... Yes! Marie Wallin KAL! I'd love the kick to get going on a few of her knits.

It would be helpful to see swatches attached to a piece of paper. Jackie, would you be willing to share your measurements? It would help us short people see how items would fit us. Hi Ladies. Loved all the sweaters. Wow I have a question for you both. I have sensitive skin so have always used a soft merino. I also for the first of my journey have used super wash yarn. I’d like to venture out and make some sweaters in non-superwash yarn. You both talk a lot about how soft some of your mom-superwash yarns are. Can you give me two or theee non-super wash brands that you feel are the softest. Thank you so much and happy new year from Boston. Diane

    • @knittingagoodyarnpodcast5765
      @knittingagoodyarnpodcast5765  7 днів тому +1

      Such a good question and you would think I would have an easy answer but every time I think of an option, I question whether it would be soft to another person. For example, right not I’m wearing my gold sweater which is de rerum natura gilliatt held with sonder yarn co halo (mohair) and it is sooooooo soft and drapey and gorgeous. But some people are sensitive to mohair too. I mean I am sensitive to some mohair’s but sonder’s is just somehow not prickly. I also would say Barenaked wools is soooo soft but I haven’t knit with it yet so can’t guarantee it. And for me anything with suri alpaca (or really alpaca in general) is buttery soft with zero prickle, but I’m not sure if you were looking for sheep wool recs?

    At the beginning of the year I picked a sweater to be a year long project. Yes a Marie Wallin. I have had the yarn for the Primrose since 2021. I started a swatch on New Year’s Day and immediately got into overwhelm of the idea of this sweater with 15 colors. Then I thought maybe I should do a hat first, but then I might not have enough yarn for the sweater. So I nixed that idea. I decided perhaps I should do an all over colorwork sweater in 2 colors as a warm up. So a friend and I are doing the Obsidian by Tania Barley sweater first. Then I’ll feel more confident to take on the Primrose.

    Great podcast! I want to make a Seaton. I have the book, yarn and I’m ready! 😂 I have always wanted to make the Orkney Cardi. And it’s still on my radar but I’m not ready….yet. I have never done my colours or had my style defined. But I gravitate to the colours that make me look more vibrant ( I think?) and style. lol. Well…comfort is verrry important. Basically, I wear jeans type pants and a tee shirt with a sweater or cardi on top and hand made wool socks, of course. My wardrobe goals are to have any knits in there to be made by me. I can’t commit to a make 9 because I always get derailed with new patterns and yarn popping up. Totally distracts me. So, I just run with it. My plans get ruined by me every time. 🤷‍♀️ oh, well not true because I decided to make a blanket for each of my kids for this past Christmas. And I did it. I decided in late July and stuck to it. 4! Blankets done and gifted. I feel like that is a different goal, though. Carry on, ladies! Carmen, I hope you kick that cold/flu/sickness completely and feel fabulous very soon! ❤

    Would it be possible to steek your Instant Crushes into cardigans? I'm not sure if you can steek mohair... I think it could be cute! You'd get some more ease by opening them up. I don't know, just a thought. Happy New Year, ladies! ❤

    Would you call sonder yarn's dirty weekend a gold or a brown? Their website suggests brown, but it seems gold in your podcast. I love it on you and want to make sure it's a gold!

    And anyway, if you decide that yellow doesn’t do it for you after all, you can always overdye it. When I was little my father took me shopping and I picked out a mustard yellow corduroy jacket and pants. My mother was horrified when she saw the outfit, but I really loved it even though it truely wasn’t my color and I wore it to death😆

    Jackie, I have the same problem with some of my sweaters stretching out after blocking. They widen and the sleeves lengthen drastically. I usually have to rip back the sleeves and redo them. I wanted to know what you do when this happens. The last two sweaters I’ve made with have had this happen. I take great care NOT to stretch anything when laying them out. Any advice would be so appreciated!

      Hi Sherry! I don’t know that I have any tips here for you… Andrea Mowry would say “this is why you swatch and block the way you will do the FO!”, but I don’t do what she says 😂 I do think it’s dependent on the yarn but I notice that it happens with mine only with Sonder DK + mohair when knit on a loose gauge. Will report back if anyone in the community shares anything brilliant ❤

      @ Thanks Jackie. I always swatch and block, I must be doing something else wrong.

      @sherrymaccullouch2095 I doubt you’re doing anything wrong - at least I choose to take the perspective that our hands are our hands, they craft and knit exactly how they are meant to! I find it super interesting that your sweaters grow width wise in the body and the opposite (length wise) in the sleeve… wonder if it’s yarn choice (drapier fibres - alpaca/silk/linen/superrwash) or gauge (my large gauges tend to grow more)… have you thought to submit the question to Andrea Mowry’s I’ll knit if I want to UA-cam channel?? This needs more minds than mine. All I can offer is if it’s a consistent pattern across most of your garments, I say knit short arms (or block before ribbing) and choose 1 size down from your usual? It’s a gamble of course but so is all our knitting. I’m always for adjusting the pattern rather than trying to adjust my hands.

    I’ve been wondering how you store your Nutiden, and remember the names??? I’ve been tagging one plate with the name month and year 😅. I’m in for the Marie Wallin!!!

    Would love to join in a Marie Wallin KAL - I’ve got Daffodil in hibernation and would love the incentive to pull it out and I really want to knit something like Rosalee (in blues) or Chestnut but I’m not entirely sure I would wear them.

    Or list them for sale you may as well get some money for new yarn rather than them just taking up space
